DOS is not the problem obviously, it is older DirectX games (that also don't take kindly to virtualisation)
Serious suggestion: VMWare Player It runs any OS butter smooth and even some demanding games perfectly fine In fact, for all those adamant Linux only users who try to play Windows games using WINE, it's actually a smarter idea to enable Virtualization in their Bios and run Windows 7 in VMWare Player
This is really cool of them. Now if only Apple or EA would do something like this to haha jk they wouldn't.
Apple has been doing pretty cheap upgrades ever since Snow Leopard, and I don't understand the EA joke at all.
well they do release the same sports game every year for the same price.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_8 let me point out one random under the hood one: DO YOU SEE THAT SHIT? Right now on Windows 7 you need to install drivers to use USB 3.0 speeds on your PC. Yes you read that right, you need to install fucking drivers from the fucking internet or a CD for your USB ports, I shit you not. I am just trying to put into perspective how dated Windows 7 is, it is literally Vista 1.1, it's entire purpose was to wipe away the embarrassment that was Vista, it is what SHOULD HAVE been released in 2006 Windows 8 is the next proper installment of Windows, with 7 being a much needed Service Pack for Vista
"File Explorer will include a ribbon toolbar." NOPE NOPE NOPE.
"File Explorer will include a ribbon toolbar." NOPE NOPE NOPE.
It's hidden by default.
"File Explorer will include a ribbon toolbar." NOPE NOPE NOPE.
Jesus Christ an arrow, how will I use explorer now?
"File Explorer will include a ribbon toolbar." NOPE NOPE NOPE.
by default it's minimized you won't notice a thing
Way to copy Apple... And on a more realistic note, You would have to pay me to upgrade to Windows 8
Whoops, I mixed up the offers. -snip-
I just installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This thing is running pretty damn good! If there are any questions anyone has I'll be glad to look into it myself and tell you how it is!
Im really skeptical about upgrading from 7. I want to give the preview a whirl but I really only have my laptop to try it on. I dont mind starting fresh i just want the compatibility to be there
Does everyone know that you need to have recently purchased a copy of Windows 7 to be eligible? This means your W7 computer from 2009 wouldn't be allowed to upgrade. https://windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US/Home/Faq
That is a completely separate offer, where buyers of new PCs get Windows 8 super, super cheap, versus just regular cheap for the rest of us. [editline]2nd July 2012[/editline] That way they're not afraid to buy a new PC when the next big thing is about to come out.

https://windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US/Home/Faq
That's the $15 upgrade. This $40 is a different offer.
I hope I am reading it right, you can upgrade it from Windows 7 to windows 8, for 40 bucks? Is that for the full OS? Since isn't a whole new OS like 100 bucks? And if it is the whole OS, when are you allowed to do this? Or can you do it now, and get the OS earlier or same for everyone else? I am having a hard time understanding all this, I did read the article, it just tells me you can upgrade from xp, vista or 7 to windows 8, for 40 bucks, nothing tells me when you can, and if you have to wait for W8 to get released.
uh yeah you have to wait for it to be released You can get the Release Preview for free right now no matter what. HOWEVER, once the full version is released you won't be able to use the Preview anymore and will have to go back or buy.

So probably won't be active until October unless the release sooner (RTM is later this month). It didn't specify in the article but in the comments section that was addressed and clarified.
You realize you can run programs in compatibility mode right
"Compatibility" mode is more often than not hit and miss. It CAN work, and it can also NOT work. And when it does work it can introduce bugs and glitches that shouldn't be there.

In 7 if you installed with SATA set as IDE and then later changed to AHCI mode in the Bios it would crash during the boot. So you had to boot up in IDE mode, change the registry, the reboot with AHCI. IIRC if you installed in AHCI mode it would work. I think it only happens if you installed in IDE mode. Really huge pain in the ass regardless.
Not that hard to set up a dual boot, especially within the new Windows setup. I myself have Win XP, Win7 and Win8 CP all installed at once.
Because this is something the standard computer user wants, needs, or knows how to do.
Windows 8 Pro
Oh no, Microsoft is succumbing to the modernistic fever of shortening names to be more hip. Betcha they officially change "Windows" to "Win" next.
I don't find Metro appealing at all to be honest. I hate this 'hip new' direction Microsoft is taking. I don't want your stupid tablet OS on my desktop computer, Microsoft. I want my desktop OS. Stop fucking around. Android integrates fine with Windows we don't need you to mesh Windows with your shitty mobile platform.
Oh no, Microsoft is succumbing to the modernistic fever of shortening names to be more hip. Betcha they officially change "Windows" to "Win" next.
Change Pro to P. WinP.
Because this is something the standard computer user wants, needs, or knows how to do.
what in fuck? Someone's concerned about compatibility, so lavacano helps by pointing out how it's easy to set up a dual boot. What're you whining about?
what in fuck? Someone's concerned about compatibility, so lavacano helps by pointing out how it's easy to set up a dual boot. What're you whining about?
If he can run the games he's worried about on XP he can run them on Win7 or Win8. It is extremely unlikely that he'll need to dual boot or emulate anything to run them. And if they ARE dos programs he won't be able to do it anyway, not on a 64x OS
Oh no, Microsoft is succumbing to the modernistic fever of shortening names to be more hip. Betcha they officially change "Windows" to "Win" next.
Don't worry, they still have Microsoft!™ Surface™ for Windows™ RT and Microsoft™ Surface™ for Windows™ 8 Pro

A quick look at a couple things that interested me. 1: How much resources does this thing take and what's different from the old one? [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22953483/Windows%208%20Preview/win8resource.jpg[/t] It looks like it runs off less resources, and much quicker I might add. I also like how it sorts from apps, and windows stuff. So you know what's essential and what's not. 2:Where do my games go and how do I play them? [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22953483/Windows%208%20Preview/win8apps.jpg[/t] This is where Unreal Tournament went, and yes it works perfectly. I tried Dawn of War 2 but it crashed. Don't know why. Also ran Tribes but only the hi-rez stuff showed up here and it's not labelled as games. I haven't gone into details on it, but it looks like they are catering to everyone, but at the same time you have to know where to look. This is all "hidden" in a right-click menu on the Start Screen (replaces the Start button) under "All Apps". [editline]3rd July 2012[/editline] 3: Internet Explorer [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/22953483/Windows%208%20Preview/win8iexplorer.jpg[/t] It runs well. I just experienced a weird issue with the keyboard. Not sure if it's related but it's beta so I'm not going to judge it harshly for that.
My computer does not have USB 3.0 host ports, nor do I own anything that uses USB 3.0, nor do I find any reason why I should use anything with USB 3.0 considering it is retardedly overpriced compared to perfectly adequate USB 2.0
I don't know if you've ever tried transferring a great deal of data over USB 2.0, but it's slow as FUCK. USB 3.0 would be useful for external hard drives, et cetera. I've never had the privelege of owning one though.
Just found a cool feature. Was this in Windows 7? [t]http://db.tt/uI8mUFzF[/t] It shows you how much internet you're using. I've never seen this before so this is pretty cool.
