Microsoft offering Windows 8 upgrade for $40 to everyone with XP and later
My school bought something like 100 new computers. A Core 2 duo in each, 3 gigabytes RAM, a Windows 7 professional license key on the side...
...each and every one downgraded to Windows XP.
I know it seems kind of retarded. But a school does that because it makes their jobs easier, the same reasons most companies do it to. They may be using applications that don't fully support new operating systems, or their technicians have systems in place that make changing to a new OS hard. Plus there's a cost to transitioning to a new OS, when you can just image every machine with what you've had and used for ages.
Eventually they do upgrade, but as my college proved for the first year of Windows 7 use, it really does fuck with how various things work. And the technical support staff had more problems than ever for the first few months while they found out what does and doesn't work during actual usage.
Now nobody has an excuse that they cannot upgrade from XP.
My entire school board will get W8, maybe. We are still stuck in the prehistoric times of XP
Sounds like a real tempting deal. I'm not sold on the whole metro thing, but the price is quite right and it would be good to upgrade to the top of the line for once.
what if they still use a voodoo card

also i dont care, i'm personally not going to upgrade. yeah, it boots faster. you know, i never cared at all about windows booting fast because i've been dualbooting with linux for years. i only use windows for bideo games
oh come on seriously
I sort of understand people coming from XP but you're on Vista and you have absolutely no reason not to upgrade. Support for Vista will eventually drop and you'll have to move on, anything you can run on Vista you'll be able to run on 8. Might as well make the change now, who knows if the offer will change with time.

I know this is a late reply, but I never understood the reasoning behind this. It might be hard to upgrade now and deal with the problems it creates, but putting it off just makes those problems even worse.
I wonder if the troubleshooting for network issues actually works yet? :v:
I am probably gonna try this, even if the metro thing doesnt seem like the best idea. I want to see how the change works, and all the change microsoft has done previously has been great (Ex: Aero).
Maybe this is a stupid question but... do I still have to say goodbye to hard drive C? Always when I installed windows xp and 7 I had to reset C.

Vista wasn't as bad as people like to make it out to be.
I mean, yeah, it was a little bloated, but it was still an upgrade to XP IMO.
only $40? nah i think i'll stay with windows 2000.
But this will probably be the first time I've ever actually paid out of pocket for an operating system, when else has a modern Windows OS been so cheap?
Hmm so they're are giving me 40$ to switch from windows 7 to 8... eh i'll pass.
Hold up.
I remember this was $15 when I first saw this thread, now it's $40?
Thanks but I'll stick to Win7 until something important happens.

What the hell? It was always $40, and that's already a huge steal considering windows is usually like $300. Look at all the posts on the first page

The $15 upgrade is for anyone who bought a PC (Dell, HP, etc) between June 2012 and Jan 2013. The $40 upgrade is for everyone else.
