Apple patents using fingerprint to unlock a device

They (and HP + Dell) are the biggest players when it comes to computers with those built-in.
did you just mention HP and Dell in the same sentence as Lenovo?
dude why
Bullshit they will never get away with this. Gateway will RIP THEM TO SHREDS. My old gateway from years ago had a fingerprint scanner to unlock. Hell my old Dell had it too. Apple will never get away with this one.
My Atrix had this. I miss using my prints instead of a pattern.
Funny how people ignore that the patent was for hiding the fingerprint device after use

Hey, just wondering what is a laptop considered as?
"Portable device" ?
I read the whole text, and I think this is a fairly accurate representation of what Apple patented:
The use of biometric feedback, including a concealed fingerprint reader and camera for facial recognition, for the purposes of user authentification which includes but is not limited to device unlock and e-commerce identity verification.
Apple may be generally full of assholes, but they're not stupid enough to try to patent an idea that has been around for 5+ years. They're just patenting a fairly novel and unique idea which is consistent with their design philosophy (elements are only visible when in use.) and which will also keep them competitive in the advancing market.
I thought they had invented a touch screen that could read fingerprints, not just slapped a fingerprint reader on there
The middle-bottom slide certainly makes you think that. I wonder if thats even possible?
This image from the article certainly makes me think they're trying.

No no no, this can't possibly be as ludicrous as it sounds. I'm sure there's a perfectly reas-

So, does this mean no more laptop fingerprint readers?
It'd be interesting to see some legislation that doesn't allow you to patent something until you have a working prototype of it.
My Dad's phone has a fingerprint reader.
It should be that if you didn't make it first, you can't patent it, although I think we all know that
if they patented posting before reading the OP facepunch would be in serious trouble.
The thinkpad i'm typing on right now has one of these in.

no it doesn't

Isn't a Patent supposed to be something you invented, not something you stole from another company

wow, they even invented face recognition!
also never been done before
[editline]14th October 2012[/editline]
also it's obvious they haven't even invented the in-screen fingerprint reader or eye recognition, since they also patent the less cool versions, is that even possible?

See that thing on the top right?
Fingerprint scanner
apple isn't actually patenting a finger print scanner, they're patenting a way of using a finger print scanner
Ha Apple, you forgot to patent locking of the device using a fingerprint. Quick, to the patent office!
lol they patented using your fingertip to slide a graphical element to the right of the screen
still plenty of ways to get around the patent, like having it just read fingerprints.
the future is still safe

See that patent in the OP? It's not for the scanner.
As much as I despise Apple patenting dumb shit, this is actually a pretty cool idea. All it is doing is hiding the scanner behind the screen using switch-able glass (that opaque/ transparent stuff fancy windows in buildings can have). Allowing you to use the scanner, but it not be visible otherwise. It's a pretty cool idea, and is actually something worth patenting.
Patent breathing while you're at it Apple.

been done, fuck off, apple
Still not the same thing as the patent. Nice try though.
I don't quite think any of you are understanding the content of these security patents. They aren't patenting the idea of fingerprint or facial recognition locking. But rather an implementation of the hardware for it. Rather than it being visible and out in the open the hardware would be behind the screen. And in the case of the facial recognition patent, the camera would show through the screen when required, but be covered by the screen otherwise (no idea how they intend to get that working to be honest).
A unique implantation, and something actually worth patenting.
