How A Game Made People Think Half-Life 3 Would Be Released This Year

at this point i'm more interested in what the hell the f-stop mechanic is than half life 3. like if i had a choice between half life 3 or what f-stop was gonna be before it became portal 2 i would mash the f-stop button like a madman
well maybe if there was more info than 3 concept art pieces and "we're working on it" for six fucking years, fans wouldn't get desperate.
we don't even know what the game's called at this point!
This. I made this post in the Korean HL2 thread, and I think it applies here:
The problem with EP3/HL3 isn't so much that it's being hyped. The main problem is that nobody has anything to get hyped off of. Valve hasn't breathed a word about the game in a long time. Yes, they've said that they're working on it, but I'm starting to wonder just how good their word actually is. We've waited for six years and they have literally nothing to show for it. As much as I want to believe in Valve, I don't know how much longer this silence can last before they ruin the trust they've built with their playerbase.
.
It was a bad idea for the devs to do this in the first place. They put something on the bottom of the TF2 Medic statue and then act surprised when people think it's related to Valve.
It annoys me a little how everyone calls the next Half life game Half Life 3 instead of Episode 3, though. There is no reason for it and it doesn't make sense to call the next game HL3.
Do you really think after all these years they will simply release just another measily episode and not a feature length game?
Just imagine the year 2020 and Half Life 2 Episode 3 comes out?
Did someone ever figure out on what the answer to the puzzle was?
It turned out Surgeon Simulator went on daily deal that day.
At this point there's a possibility that all works on Half-Life universe are just scrapped due to various fuck-ups at Valve or something, and they're basically scared shitless to admit it. Because fans might go nuts.
The fans are already nuts.
Seeing things that are not there.

what kind of company scraps their main and most well known franchise that has potential to make a shitzillion dollars, that's the dumbest idea ever
it's like EA saying oh hey guys because of developmental cutbacks, there will no longer be any battlefield games ever again
Yes, but the media played it that way, from what I remember.
OK, PARTS of the media. its not a single entity, mostly.
You realize the media is made up of people right? The people in the media obviously hooked onto it and reported on it a bunch, but this time I don't think they are to blame, this was some ridiculous coincidences, and until they actually explain why they used Korean...I don't know man.

do you even realize how crazy that sounds

you know why they don't actually release any information, right? they've talked about it numerous times. they want to have ultimate control over the creative process - they don't want to create expectations in people and then cut them, like what happened with hl2 and the leak etc. they want to be able to release info when they know they have a solid product and aren't planning any revisions.
Just put your tin foil hats back in the damn closet and go play Fallout: New Vegas or something, they'll release EP3/HL3 when they feel like it.

Well not scrapped, I worded that badly. "Put on hold indefinitely". As opposed to "working on it". And besides, the emphasis was on "scared", not on scrapped. The source of conspiracy theory is that no one has any information and it's assumed that Valve is hiding something. But what if there's infact nothing there to show because no one is working on the game currently. Who would release that kind of info to public?

I realised that I just spout out yet another conspiracy theory.

Well I personally stopped caring about HL3 or HL2Ep3 a long time ago. Comes out - great, doesn't - well shit, tough luck.
I'm more interested in fans' reactions. Precisely the people who don't get that "it's a video game".
i thought that was 343n
im dumb
sorry
Speaking of HL3, did anyone see what happened to the Mysterious Trading Card? It is turning into a nautical chart:

I think Valve is teasing us at the moment for something, especially since the parts of the chart have the symbols for icebergs on it.

HL3 confirmed. :v:

wasn't f-stop a game mechanic?
The fact that this sort of thing happens means people are excited for a game that's long overdue.
Never understood why people like this game, looks like boring shit
You gotta film yourself playing it, be sure to exaggerate everything, scream and laugh as hard as you can as if every thing the most hilarious gut busting thing you've ever seen in your life, then upload it to youtube.
I havent even heard about this.
Crowbar came just before the tweets but yeah, I'd take those as a stronger indicator than what was present in surgeon simulator.

You do realize we don't know a thing about f-stop and if it's even remotely good or entertaining? They pulled it out of Portal 2 because it wasn't working. Whether it's any good or not is a mystery.
I often consider "leaking" a HL3/EP3 screenshot that's actually a well done GMod screenshot.
Congratulations you are totally the first person to come up with that idea.

Of course they aren't going to release a short game, i didn't say anything about that. I said the name of the game is more likely to be Episode 3, the name of the game doesn't determine it's length or content. Calling it Episode 3 would keep consistent with the previous naming of the series, so people don't get confused. It won't be called Half life 3 because that will be reserved for a new story arc. People who are new to the series might think it is independent to the previous games in the series and that they don't need to play the previous games to understand it. As long as the next game is within the Half life 2 Story arc, it will be something with Half life 2 in the name.
People just think it is going to be HL3 just because of how long the game has been in development. It does not make sense and there is nothing to suggest that is actually going to be the name. It would be like if one of the HL1 expansions had been called HL2. If the game was released in 2020 and was called Half life 2: Episode 3, there would be no problem - it's still part of the Half life 2 story.
they're never going to make hl3
if it does ever get made i wouldn't surprise me if it's in ten years and it's out-sourced to some up-and-coming dev and they fuck it up completely but everyone buys it for the nostalgia and fan service. it'll be our generation's duke nukem
I gave up on the game years ago.
I wonder how many HL fans have died in this wait.
I've given up the hype simply because Valve is going to do what they're going to do. So far it's been damn near impossible to predict their moves so why keep jumping at speculation? The day my hype will return for the next installment in the Half Life universe will be the day I see a thread on Facepunch with official confirmation on the release.
Christ damnit
I keep forgetting that HL3 "exists" even though I'm playing through all of the episodes right now...
This is really pathetic, but I guess they do need to reach the year 3000 to make a proper release.
Kinda like how HL1 was released in 199?, how HL2 was released in 2004...
I think i've just given up on Half life 3/episode 3
I dunno, just doesn't seem worth hyping myself up constantly for over 5 years, it's not worth it
