• How A Game Made People Think Half-Life 3 Would Be Released This Year

The picture in OP is fucking perfect.
I think i've just given up on Half life 3/episode 3 I dunno, just doesn't seem worth hyping myself up constantly for over 5 years, it's not worth it
I agree. I guess some people still clutch to false hope, but until an actual announcement comes out I'm just gonna not care about these "ARGs" or when people find wall textures in TF2 to be shaped like the borealis Wish we could all go to hypersleep until Valve releases an announcement.
At this point there's a possibility that all works on Half-Life universe are just scrapped due to various fuck-ups at Valve or something, and they're basically scared shitless to admit it. Because fans might go nuts.
hl3 is in the works, it's just not gotten very far at all because theyre pulling the classic valve formula of "let's make an entire game and decide it's not good and redo it completely"
hl3 is in the works, it's just not gotten very far at all because theyre pulling the classic valve formula of "let's make an entire game and decide it's not good and redo it completely"
If it is in the work, we're probably talking about early technical works on new engine. Because you see, Laidlaw seems to be tired of waiting too.
The problem is the longer it takes the higher the demand is. We saw what happened with Duke Nukem Forever, Valve don't want HL3 to be remembered in the same way. They don't want to release it if it's not up to scratch, but taking more time means it has to be better and better in quality as time goes on.

For the last few episodes we've seen Source get re-polished quite beautifully to meet our expectations for an optimized, but beautiful gaming experience. It's been said over and over again that the Source engine is showing its age though and knowing that I have a hunch that we'll be seeing a whole new engine entirely that will suit more modern machines. Is this a good or a bad thing? I think overall it'll be a great opportunity for new SDK tools, especially since as of recently there's been a huge influx of people taking interest in source development. Plus it'll be a nice refresh on Valve's part to do more complex things they have planned down the road. Portal and Portal 2 are both testaments to what talent Valve has over there working on Source. If given the opportunity to completely make a new engine I'm sure we could expect nothing less than brilliance.
they're never going to make hl3 if it does ever get made i wouldn't surprise me if it's in ten years and it's out-sourced to some up-and-coming dev and they fuck it up completely but everyone buys it for the nostalgia and fan service. it'll be our generation's duke nukem
IMO, I think it would come out in about four years and be given less special treatment from Valve than DOTA 2 /TF2 and fail to live up to it's hype. And in a desperate effort to make some money before it's fanbase fades away, Valve will probably plaster a hat/weapon economy over it.
you know why they don't actually release any information, right? they've talked about it numerous times. they want to have ultimate control over the creative process - they don't want to create expectations in people and then cut them, like what happened with hl2 and the leak etc. they want to be able to release info when they know they have a solid product and aren't planning any revisions.
People would take anything at this point. They're not being the good guy any more by completely freezing the fans out. Fans (myself included) want something more than, "No guys, really, we're working on it. Trust us." It sounds pretty shady that they've been saying that forever and have nothing to show for it. Has Half-Life 3 gone through so many revisions that not a single element has remained consistent in any of them? If HL3 turns out to be on Source 2, though, then I'll forgive them. Releasing a trailer solely about Half-Life and not breathing a word about Source 2 would be suicide.
Do you really think after all these years they will simply release just another measily episode and not a feature length game? Just imagine the year 2020 and Half Life 2 Episode 3 comes out?
Well you've got to consider that it's part of the Half-Life 2 story arc, so you've got to label as part of that story arc or else it might look a bit odd/out of place. Calling it Half-Life 3 would imply that it's a different story arc, when it's not. Just because it's called Episode 3 doesn't mean that it has to be the length of an Episode. However, even if it was short in length, does it really matter if it ends up being 4 hours of brilliance? Quality over quantity please. On top of all of this, there are several files scattered around that refer to ep3, so it's going to be Half-Life 2: Episode 3.
I wish there was hard evidence, fucking credible evidence that it is coming soon so all those bullshit theories and false ARG shits stop once and for all. It's getting old.
http://www.pcper.com/news/Editorial/NVIDIA-continues-tease-sends-us-crowbar http://gamerant.com/half-life-3-news-ign-valve-johnj-146336/ Crowbar came just before the tweets but yeah, I'd take those as a stronger indicator than what was present in surgeon simulator. [editline]8th July 2013[/editline] You do realize we don't know a thing about f-stop and if it's even remotely good or entertaining? They pulled it out of Portal 2 because it wasn't working. Whether it's any good or not is a mystery.
IGN is typically this asinine and, with Valve thats just a normal post I guess?
hl3 is in the works, it's just not gotten very far at all because theyre pulling the classic valve formula of "let's make an entire game and decide it's not good and redo it completely"
Eh, While HL1 DID get a "scrap it all, redo", HL2 didn't really get anything like that. Development for games is usually very progressive: there is always ALWAYS placeholder content, or stuff that isn't finished, and everything is always getting changed. It's no big surprise HL3 is taking this long considering they're working on a new engine too.

They are definitely working on a new engine and moreso working on SDK tools that everyone can learn to use quickly, it's practically admitted that hammer is awful every time it's brought up with them. I've no doubts a new source engine will push boundaries more than the other engines are currently doing but they are going to have to do some really unfathomable things to make people feel the wait was worth it. It has to do things we currently find impossible. [editline]8th July 2013[/editline]
IGN is typically this asinine and, with Valve thats just a normal post I guess?
It gained a huge reaction, on par with (and arguably bigger than) this recent one. The point is if people keep jumping through hoops even though they've been set up in the past with arguably bigger red herrings then they will be taken advantage of over and over again. It's easy to sit around calling all these different companies out on their bullshit and all, but to actually make a difference you need to show them you aren't going to react and play right into their hands regardless of how much they try and play on your enthusiasm.

half life 2 confirmed
Unless based Gabe comes on stage in a white angel gown bearing a crowbar and the number 3, I'll just keep waiting, without worrying about it.
I wonder how many HL fans have died in this wait.
dear lord that just sucks thinking about it
