All I know is that this thread is full of obscure flags. Bosnia, Faroe Islands, Slovenia, Croatia... Normally everyone forgets that you guys even exist outside of something to do with the war(s) which is kinda sad. Except for the Faroese, of course. You guys aren't famous for a goddamn thing and if you were you'd be famous for somehow fitting an absurd amount of sheep on a bunch of tiny islands.
sorry i didn't realize that the massacre of 8000 innocent human beings with hopes and dreams and complex personalities wasn't a big enough deal already when you look at 8000 and six million, you shouldn't think "eight thousand? nahhhh bro, that ain't hardcore enough to be a genocide. six million, however, that's metal, my man!" you should think "8000 people oh my god that's horrible -- six million people? holy christ that's terrifying."
And to hold the two up to each other and say they are worthy of the same title is disingenuous.
[sp]Fun fact: The only recorded successful complete genocide in history was committed by the British[/sp]
Pretty sure the Spanish were thorough with smallpox when it came to the Aztecs, and who knows how many native American cultures they inadvertantly wiped out, they're constantly redefining the social structures and connections that the tribes had between them. Anyway it's still sad in some respects that they couldn't allow them to make an apology and pay their respects, forgiveness is a bridge that must be built from both sides
And to hold the two up to each other and say they are worthy of the same title is disingenuous.
processed squeeze-cheese and the finest cheese on the planet from a tiny cottage in france are both cheese. there's a reason that we have adjectives and modifiers, such as "delicious" cheese v.s. "shitty" cheese, or "smaller, localized" genocide v.s. "massive, scientifically-engineered" genocide.
amazing how people are seriously saying what the serbs did isn't considered genocide one can say they committed ethnic cleansing, but they've committed mass murder in several different countries in the Balkans, so its practically genocide at that point, since it was purposely done.

I've even seen one or two people from Bosnia. First time I've seen anyone from the Faroe Islands though! They number only 50,000 people.

And my father is from Croatia. I'm not saying that what happened in Srebrenica wasn't horrible.
8000 innocent human beings
ok that's a stretch how many men from there were combatants it was a war crime
ok that's a stretch how many men from there were combatants it was a war crime
tbh it was for rhetorical effect more than anything i apologize if i was being inaccurate

[editline]12th July 2015[/editline] bosnia isnt just about genocide and floods you know [editline]12th July 2015[/editline]
Srebrenica? 8000 people isn't a genocide, don't kid yourself. Genocides have a scale to them that's into the six digits at a minimum. Branding every massacre as a genocide lessens its impact as it normalizes the word in discourse.
Yeah I get what you mean, 8000 people wouldnt be enough to displace your head out of your ass. See? I can make arbitrary standards for what a genocide is too. (Spoiler alert, genocide is about intent, not numbers)
Guess Holodomr and the Armenian genocide aren't genocides? They didn't wipe out all Armenians/Ukrainians and didn't even intend to but sure did target them and kill quite a few of them.
I disagree on it being genocide. Yes, it was horrible, it's absolutely a war crime and the people behind it, like Ratko Mladic absolutely need to be punished for it. But what happened to the jews under the World War was genocide, and I think it's dishonoring the jews to compare the Srebrenica massacre and that as genocide.
The Holocaust shouldn't be a 'standard' for what determines genocide.
is 8000 not a large enough number for you
When you pair it up to the world population of around that time, its actually an insignificant number. But maybe when its paired with the population of Bosnia, its actually a larger number. Still... I wouldn't call it genocide til there is atleast 2 more zeros appended
The Holocaust shouldn't be a 'standard' for what determines genocide.
I understand what you mean, but as I've understood, the serbs let women and kids go, and then slaughtered the men, does that still count as a genocide?
I understand what you mean, but as I've understood, the serbs let women and kids go, and then slaughtered the men, does that still count as a genocide?
While there were cases of women and children being evacuated, bodies of both are still being discovered in mass burials. The victims were still targeted because of their background and ethnicity.
ok that's a stretch how many men from there were combatants it was a war crime
The 8000 killed were muslim civilians. Amongst them many children. It was nothing short of ethnic cleansing or genocide.
While there were cases of women and children being evacuated, bodies of both are still being discovered in mass burials. The victims were still targeted because of their background and ethnicity.
But if they did let them go, how come it's a genocide then if they didn't intend to eliminate everyone? I'm still trying to understand this.
You shouldnt ask yourself why we post in threads relevant to us, you should ask yourself why only threads with news about us that get posted are like this.
That was exactly my point though, the entire region is essentially famous for terrible stuff. Granted since the Balkans have been contested since forever there's going to be a fair amount of war-related history, but there's also a lot of other stuff too.
But if they did let them go, how come it's a genocide then if they didn't intend to eliminate everyone? Its a bit selective because not all news is sensational, like that thread where gay marriage got a pass in slovenia, everyone was happy, but nobody posted a thread when it got vetoed in voting and we went back to square one.
And to hold the two up to each other and say they are worthy of the same title is disingenuous.
i suppose 7/7 shouldnt be classified as a terrorist attack because 9/11 had so many more deaths!!!! 9/11 was 53 7/7s!!!!!!! [editline]12th July 2015[/editline] it should just be murder instead guys

I wasn't talking about the fact that people from the Balkans were posting in a thread about something that happened there, by the way. Granted that my interest in the region is personal (ex-girlfriend, also other friends there) but I sometimes think that the wars are the only reason why anyone is even familiar with the region at all. Well, wars and crime, either way it makes me sad.
please stop youre making all americans seem like self-absorbed pricks, when in reality its just you
Stop. Settle down. The people the post was directed at got it just fine, including the second line that was clearly a joke, sure it was a lame in-joke that the one Faroese guy would get, but it was also directed at him too. I'm not going to argue with you if you're going to get offended on behalf of other people and have the audacity to call me self-absorbed.

I'd rather see news about Croatia's fantastic leaps in graphic design since it became independent, but honestly that sort of news doesn't come into SH from any country, let alone Croatia. At the end of the day, the balkan region simply has this reputation. I don't even want to talk about the Yugoslav/Ex-yugoslav/10 day war/independence wars context because honestly the topic has grown so tiring. [editline]13th July 2015[/editline]
yes, saying someone is mean because they called jeffrey a fucking retard is definitely not okay, as you shouldn't be getting offended on their behalf!! you are a horrible poster [editline]i didnt actually edit this but ok[/editline] wait guys its just a joke ok? you get it!!
You don't have to speak for our behalf. Believe me, when it comes to looking at American culture there are things far different from just being blunt or circumstancially ignorant that people like me find odd about your country. And I should clarify that by odd I don't mean bad.
yes, saying someone is mean because they called jeffrey a fucking retard is definitely not okay, as you shouldn't be getting offended on their behalf!! you are a horrible poster
Would you please just fucking stop? I said the Faroe Islands wouldn't be famous for anything other than having a lot of sheep. Oh wow holy shit that was such a terrible thing to say, I'm totally sorry!!!!! There's a very rich history of political shenanigans and warfare that was more or less fought by dudes who had absolutely nothing against some weird foreign invader and crazy stuff happened. I mean, shit, the mythology of the various peoples of that region is absolutely wild and it just gets more and more crazy as time goes on up until Christianity shows up. Of course this makes for some interesting historical landmarks and the cities there are so goddamn cool looking. Plus there's the natural beauty, and I'd really like to have an extended vacation there before I die. Surprisingly the castles in Western Europe look a little dumpy and lame compared to those found in Eastern Europe, which makes for some great locations to film at. But yeah, you're right, unless it's a big thing by itself there really isn't many positive things that make it to SH from any country. I wasn't just talking about SH specifically though, I was just commenting on news in general. Things like this story are the type of thing I guess "Westerners" see all the time, and it's probably why there's always some Eastern European guy with a thick accent as a bad guy in the movies. (though that might be because some of the actors play excellent bad guys, Rade Šerbedžija for example) Aside from that the more niche news does make it out, though you'll have some "bizarre" stuff too, but I think that's a universal thing.

But our politics are not like in the US, that shit is entertaining as fuck, ours are more like drinking asphalt through a straw. I can totally get why only the more interesting news gets out. As an aside, I should note that the balkans are not southern europe and the most northern post-yugoslav country is central/central-southern european, they are not eastern. You might know this already since you've noted that you're interested in the region, but Slavic languages are actually split into three major groups, and ours here are Southern Slavic.
