Doubtful. It didn't stop that one Vietnamese guy from getting an AK-47, which was probably illegal to begin with, and then shooting up a bunch of people in an immigration office.
One extreme example doesn't account for much. Despite the fact that Edmonton is also above average (To nearly the same degree as New York) in crime it also didn't stop someone from taking his hunting rifle to the Worker's Compensation Board and take them all hostage.
Shit can happen anywhere.

THE ATF ISN'T SEIZING THE GUNS BECAUSE THEY COULD BE CONVERTED INTO MACHINE GUNS, IT'S SEIZING THEM BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE ORANGE BARREL-TIPS THAT'S BEEN REQUIRED TO BE ON AIRSOFT GUNS FOR CENTURIES
without the orange tip, they could be used as fake weapons for crimes, or some innocent airsoft user could get hurt by someone thinking that it's a real gun; both scenarios have happened numerous times before.
the article is misleading
In alot of states, you can just have the fucking flash hider covers which are orange over the tips, and then take them off at a registered airsoft field. So the ATF is still unbelievably bored/stupid. I've never had to buy an airsoft gun with an orange tip, because of those covers.
[editline]01:09AM[/editline]
Like for example, none of my airsoft guns have orange tips, because I just use orange plastic covers for the barrels and take them off whenever they're being used. Problem solved.
Also, I bet $1,000 that you can't convert an airsoft M249 into a real one without spending atleast 98% of the price of a real M249.
Man, fuck the ATF.
A U.S. agency achieves a new level of stupidity, breaking the record they personally set.
I guess the ATF haven't learned shit since they fucked up at Waco.

The Martins said they've received shipments before from Taiwan that were missing the orange tips and were simply asked by customs agents to drive up to Tacoma and paint the tips orange themselves. They are wondering why it is an issue now.

ATF is the most useless organization ever to come out of the fuckupedest of the Prohibition infrastructure.
Policing three things that are already fucking legal is a waste of goddamn money.
The ATF are a bunch of fucktards.
Soon enough we will see "ATF SEIZES PAINTBALL GUNS IN FEAR THAT THEY CAN BE CONVERTED IN TO WMDs"
With minimal effort it could be turned into a machine gun?
Lol. But where would they get the bullets.
The BBs could with minimal effort be converted to real bullets.
To turn that airsoft gun into a real gun you only need two things. Duct tape, and a real gun...
Tape real gun to the side of airsoft gun and there ya go.
Hard to believe that this has gone this far.
This man has absolutely NO idea what he is talking about, it is virtually impossible to convert an airsoft gun into a real working weapon. It would take LESS time and expertise to build your own MG42 than convert an M9 airsoft gun into a real one. It would probably be more expensive too.
[editline]10:32AM[/editline]
The BBs could with minimal effort be converted to real bullets.
Yeah get a shell casing, fill it with gunpowder or some other combustable material and encase the BB with metal, and put it all together.
I just put this on my local airsoft fields site and I am going to see what kind of responses I am going to get.

Nope, it's got a lower violent crime rate than most major U.S. cities.

It's possible for something to be legal, but regulated, man :buddy: I woulda thought you'd known that.
The guy had no idea what he was talking about. For starters, he called an assault rifle a machine gun, second he tried to put the magazine in wrong and third, they have no proof that it can be converted. Why the hell would you convert it when you'd need the actual (real) weapon to do so?
It's possible for something to be legal, but regulated, man :buddy: I woulda thought you'd known that.
Tobacco and alcohol can be regulated, as they already fucking are, by pre-existing business regulation bureaus. Illegal weapons trafficking can be (and is) regulated and stomped out by the FBI.
The ATF is redundancy incarnate. It is pointless. It is doing a job just about every other agency can do.
The ATF is basically the DEA only it's not even monitoring something illegal.
[editline]12:54PM[/editline]
The ATF takes a billion dollars a year to do jack shit of anything uniquely useful on their part.
[editline]12:57PM[/editline]
It is a holdover of the Bureau of Prohibition, they were initially a white-collar agency that simply regulated business practices, but now there's this heavy-handed fucking policing agency thanks to the Homeland Security act, when they were transferred from the Treasury department to the Department of Justice. The ATF was not DESIGNED to be a policing agency, it was a regulatory agency for firearms, tobacco and alcohol producers and distributors, NOT a policing agency for consumers of those products.

And yet not one american airsoft-video I've seen has had any orange barrel-tips in it.
In fact, the only kind of BB guns I've ever seen with those are some cheap see-trough plastic ones that you can buy for 5$.
Also they do not REGULATE tobacco and alcohol anymore. They are purely a policing agency. The regulatory responsibilities were returned to a new branch of the Treasury Department.
Now you guys know a little bit about one of the agencies that helps make life hard for legitimate gun owners.
And in this case airsoft importers.
They're not particularly good at regulating guns, either, when you consider they rarely have the capacity to execute warrants without being a direct cause to the deaths of dozens of children.

Airsoft has been around for centuries? What?
And if I paint the tip of a real gun orange, people will think that it's airsoft and I can ship it across the country?
Also the ATF does not regulate consumer products and toys. They regulate firearms. Airsoft guns are not firearms. They are overstepping their jurisdiction. Again.
Hey maybe they'll burn the shop down because they were stockpiling plastic children's toys and dangerous 1mm BB ammunition.
correction: 6mm caseless :smug:
Don't you watch mob movies? The airsoft store is obviously a front for their real business - arms dealing. In each shipment of toy guns, there are 2-3 real guns. The ATF has probably been gathering evidence on them for years.
Haha, Oh Wow

agent jim why is this toy heavier than the others
agent jim why is this toy heavier than the others
Uhhhh That one's an electric, sir!
Also Sigma, Any weapon can be used for crimes, Orange tip or Not... Orange tips on Airsoft Weapons are optional and only required for shipping purposes. It is not illegal to remove the orange tips
Of course the ATF can't really say Hey you do this and this our way, Taiwan... Oh No, so they go after someone who really has no control on what condition the weapons are shipped in instead
In England its possible to get a permit to have a airsoft rifle without an orange tip.
I know that. I'm just pointing out that the guns were confiscated for them not having the orange tips instead of because the ATF thought they could be turned into machine guns like everyone in this thread thinks
No, they took them because they thought they could be turned into weapons. ATF can't take, and destroy $12,000 worth a of goods from a local business just because the goods were missing a safety feature that is not required for it to be sold.

Any retard with half a brain can spray paint the tip black again. I doubt that's the whole reason they did it.
[editline]03:46PM[/editline]
The whole Idea is really stupid, imo. Anyone could spray paint the tips of their guns orange, walk straight into a crowd and massacre everyone, with no one expecting a thing because of the orange tips.
What about BB guns. made from real metal and not plastic like those airsoft guns (they could be metal but every one that I used was plastic) wouldn't it be easier to make a bb gun into a rifle.
What about BB guns. made from real metal and not plastic like those airsoft guns (they could be metal but every one that I used was plastic) wouldn't it be easier to make a bb gun into a rifle.
This isn't an issue about making toys into real guns.
And no, a BB, pellet, airsoft, whatever, any non-firearm gun is pretty much impossible to convert into a functional firearm. I mean, yeah, if you know what you're doing you could probably fashion a crude rifle from one, but for fuck's sake, you can make a .22 repeater out of a cane and parts of a lawnmower if you've got the time and tools on hand.

This has happened before. Multiple times. With a greater cost of goods destroyed, too.
It is not illegal to remove the orange tips
Depends on if it's a firearm replica or not, which I think a lot of Airsoft stuff is classified as.
