By "transport heritage" do they mean refusal to update the god awful upholstery design that we've been using for like fifty years? tbh im so used to seeing it i spose it isnt that bad
This was what I thought too, everything looks great apart from that fabric which looks like it's from the 80's. It lets it down for me a little.
We have driverless trains in Lausanne, Switzerland too.

A nice upgrade from what we had previously:

Budapest metro is getting automatized too, but currently there is a temporary period when someone has to sit in the cabin, to supervise. But since nothing happens the guy tends to fall asleep.
I'd be quite worried if I was a tourist, the train rolls in and the "driver" is visibly snoring.

We have that already, its called the DLR. It has someone to operate the doors tho.
now do it in here and fire every driver, I'm fed up with the strikes literally every week
I would absolutely love something like this to happen in NYC. But that would likely make the MTA raise the fare to $5 a ride.
Means less stopping power when someone jumps on the tracks.
They are also installing platform doors like they have on the Jubilee line across much of the network.
So no more Jumpers.
I'm seriously all for driverless trains, the DLR works great and the Copenhagen metro was pretty good when i used it too. It's just a pity they won't use them right away.
And of course the northern line rattles on without them. Seriously, The northern line used to be the train i used for commuting and it really needs a major upgrade. Summer days are basically a sauna of sweaty people.

At least the central is getting them, during summer it felt like traveling in an oven.

They use them because they mask stains and gross stuff from thousands of people sitting on them daily.
it is worth considering that even the first line to be automated (the piccadilly) in the 2030s won't be fully automatic as driverless trains need platform edge doors to operate. there is a section where tracks are shared with the metropolitan line and the doors of the two train sets are in different places meaning there will have to be driver operation for one part of the line (rayners lane to uxbridge).
Shouldn't they pump fresh air from underneath, and let the hot and smelly air pass through the top?
Why do tube operators strike so much? Are they that badly paid and treated? Or is it because they know that when they do, they cripple the capital and thus have pretty much complete job security?
At least they aren't going to be these shitty looking things:

Their pay really isn't bad, I think it's like £40k+, far better than something like the bus drivers who actively have to drive the busses while dealing with traffic nightmares and the bad customers. I think tube pay can go up well above that too. I know they'll pretty much get a jumper at one stage, but they get pretty good treatment if it happens, I believe.
i really like the look of the green and red lights on the train doors and platform edge doors
They will become sentient and strike

[sp]too bad they're polish made[/sp]
That polish tram aint as futuristic as the 'Russia 1' from transmash:

As for the london train, I kinda like the interior:

Honestly, i'm absolutely ok about these old cars. They are loud though, but i don't care since i always wear headphones. Having cellphone coverage and wifi is also cool.
Also, as far as i know, they don't upgrade cars much just because they have some plans on automating metro trains too, but it's a pretty difficult goal because of a very short interval between trains. So they want to prepare their systems in some way, and then start massively replacing old cars.

a lot of the subway trains in budapest also look like this, which is funny because like half of them are modernized and the other half are the exact same blue trains from the communist era
they sound like a freight train, shake all over the place, and go way faster than feels safe given the state of most of them :v:

The seats looks very comfy.
If only buses could also be on time. First advertise a bus within 10 minutes, but I've waited half an hour for a bus - only to see a line of 3 buses come down the street.
We've had this in Turin for 8 years already. Driverless and suicide-proof

In NYC we still have these things that have been in service since 1964 and the MTA doesn't plan on replacing them until at least 2017

Although obviously those are the oldest still running in the system, and the system runs cars made in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and now they started rolling out these new cars in the early to mid 2000's
Those are some slick ass looking trains
The DC Metro is only now moving out of the 70's and into the 90's..

And the sad part is that the DC Metro was the nicest and cleanest one I have used in America by far.
Admittedly, the only other one I have used more than one or two times is the Chicago Subway, which is completely disgusting. It just shows how little of a shit our country cares about public institutions, transportation or otherwise.
Say goodbye to whatever union all those Underground operators belong to. Another round of middle-class, organized, properly-represented jobs gone forever.

Gone for the better, I think that more automation will get us closer and closer to not having to work in order to live.
