I don't pay 60 bucks a year to get ad's plastered in my face. This is bullshit, what are the ads supposed to be paying for anyway?
Wait, why are you guys paying $60 for Live? You can get it for $35 pretty much year round.
The homescreen is just a billboard of random bullshit
I wish I could just install Adblock on XBL
If some games weren't console exclusives I'd throw the fucking thing in the trash
So let me get this straight:
You pay for your internet service and THEN you have to pay to connect your Xbox to your own internet and then you get an increasing amount of ads thrown into your face?
Remind me again why people use this service?...
Because it is the only one that makes multiplayer possible.
Because it is the only one that makes multiplayer possible.
so multiplayer on the ps3/pc/wii u doesn't exist now?
so multiplayer on the ps3/pc/wii u doesn't exist now?
Why is this so hard to understand?
If you don't pay for a XBOX service you do not get access to XBOX multiplayer making a considerably large part of many games impossible to use on your console.
It's like having to pay to park somewhere. It's complete bullshit, but you put up with it so that you can park there.
so multiplayer on the ps3/pc/wii u doesn't exist now?
No, I want to continue to use my xbox and I play with my friends online. I cannot afford another console. Besides I actually like the Xbox and the games available.
Well, not owning an Xbox means I don't know what these ads are like. Are they as obnoxious as they sound?
Not really obnoxious, but not really kind to people who pay the premium for a gold subscription.
I'd only be ok with more ads if:
interacting with the ads give give content, for example, the Wreck it Ralph adds gave you free gamer pics
ads mean that the price of gold subscription can be cut?
More free games, sales, and exclusives
free MS points?
Don't worry man. Microsoft cares. On your birthday if you have a huge gamer score they will give you 20 free microsoft points.

Trade in the xbox use the money you would of used for a subscription to get a PS3? Or better yet use that money for a couple upgrades to your PC, buy all your games via Steam for about £20 less than console games and then the sales oboy. And then you're still saving money by not paying for a shit service.
Guys I managed to get around £110 a couple of months ago for a pre-owned 360 Slim and around 10 games.
Just use that money to buy a PS3/Money towards a PC. Microsoft are just making the 360 worse as time goes on.

But PS3 has no games!!!
In all seriousness, I have a decent pc and a console. I mostly play console for the exclusive and when my pals are at my place, we play locally some games and it's really entertaining.
If I'm not mistaken, XBOX 360 Live provides the fastest online multiplayer connection around. They also give discount prices on several DLCs and give early access to some games and videos if you have a gold membership. Not to mention, XBOX Live have a very strict online security in compare to PSN.
[editline]26th January 2013[/editline]
Of course paying for online multiplayer is ridiculous if you ask me.
I think for stuff like this people forget the most important thing, which is having the platform your friends play on, for example I'd rather buy and play all my games on PC, but most of my friends have an Xbox and just an Xbox, so I usually buy a few games for that so I can play with them.
I only ever buy a month of Gold at a time when there's a new game release or something. The only reason I still play it is because I have friends who either can't afford or don't want a new PC. Also exclusives.
idk about you guys but the only ads I see on my dashboard are for Lovefilm or new games, they're pretty small and only play sound when you scroll over them which isn't a bother to me at all.
If you pay for any type of service you shouldn't have to put up with ads and second rate service. Period.
If you pay for any type of service you shouldn't have to put up with ads and second rate service. Period.
I am fine with it, it's not to obnoxious and it sometimes informs me about new games or news.
$60 advert themed menu simulation mmo
Microsoft is being huge shit lately, didn't you guys notice?
I'm mostly fine as long as I don't have to shout "McDonalds!" into the mic or eventual in-built kinect every 15 minutes of gameplay.
So far I'm not annoyed by the ads that much, but in principle I'm baffled on how they can do this for paying customers.
I still don't get why Xbox does this. One of the main things I remember from years ago was MS saying, "Yea, we aren't free, but we don't have ads."
I think they now know people have little choice in the matter.
I don't get how people choose the Xbox where you have to pay for Live instead of the PS3. PSN is free right? Why choose the Xbox then? Exclusives?
[editline]26th January 2013[/editline]
there was also the fact that ps3 was expensive as fuck, as well as having no games
but it seems the tides have turned dramatically
The only thing I'd really care about was that it was truely very expensive, but then again, who's crazy enough to buy a console at release price when it's expensive as fuck?
(I know, lots of people are, but still sounds really stupid)
And I always found the "no games" argument pretty dumb aswell. It's not like it will never have games, just wait ffs. Better than paying to use the online services which in the end, should give you the same price you would spend on a PS3...
fuck it i may as well sell my xbox
i remember when people thought the PS3's GUI was a cluster fuck

Windows 8 didn't turn out as well as we expected. We can either hold our own employees accountable for their shortcomings, or take it out on our customers, pissing them off and treating them like suckers.
The XBL fee pays for the multiplayer servers.
That reminds me. Do Xbox Live games still use players as hosts (I know Halo 2 did, haven't touched an Xbox 360 in 4 or 5 years so I wouldn't know about Halo Reach / Halo 4)? I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't any actual servers for games/matches, the only actual servers are those used to record statistics.
I remember playing a few games after the publishers closed the servers down (TimeSplitters Future Perfect), you could still play custom games online there just weren't any statistics recorded or anything like that. I imagine that some of the newer games have actual servers that are used instead of player hosts though, but I wouldn't be surprised if Halo still functioned the same with hosts.
Fuck xbox live, all the cool kids are using Miiverse
In all seriousness miiverse is actually pretty cool

I like your example... It shows how little you understand.
Someone said XBox gold is having to pay to use your internet. Well, no. You are paying to use the XBox service for its upkeep and content and what not. Is it overpriced? Eh, debatable. If you buy it by the year it isn't that bed... They have a ton of servers behind it that need upkeep and housing, so I see why they have a price.
However, with the introduction of more and more ads I feel that the cost should go down and down.
Your example says you hate paying for parking or everyone does. Yeah, sure it sucks, but that parking lot has to pay taxes and up keep. Notice how that parking lot probably doesn't have any pot holes and the lines are painted on nicely? That is because paying to park there pays for that.
Is parking in lots overpriced? Well, yes, people have space to offer they offer it for profit, not for free.
I used to get Xbox live and I hated shelling out $50 a year, but really... $50 a year is nothing, unless you literally have absolutely no money. Then you should probably be spending your time a little more wisely.
I find it incredibly irritating, I hate that you have to pay for it, so I am completely on board with calling it bullshit. But when I step back and try to think of why they charge for it, I am less upset.
But when I step back and try to think of why they charge for it, I am less upset.
I know where you're coming from, but I think it kind of loses some weight when we look at all the other gaming services, all of which are completely free and offer the essentially the same thing. Steam is free, WiiU-online is free, PSN is free. Why is Microsoft the only one charging its user base for offering the same thing as its competitors (and actually less, in the case of PSN), and throwing a frightening amount of ads on top to boot?
Feels like a whole lot of greed.

The thing is, the part that is the core of the system, the online multiplayer isnt hosted by microsoft.
you are paying to play on a peer to peer multiplayer system.
Sure they have ESPN, and a bunch of other useless shit that a lot of people dont care about that they have to pay for, but why should we have to pay for services you dont want?
Sony offers multiplayer for free, and then charges for extra bonuses, this should be the case with xbox live, but microsoft has convinced enough suckers pay up this isnt going to happen.
Microsoft knows this gen is almost over, they are trying to squeeze every last cent out of it.
The New Hotness update for xbl changed my gaming life for the better.
One day I logged into xbl to discover that the interface had been completley overhauled, adds were widely more prevelant and it was forcing me to create a mii-esq avatar.
I turned off my console, left the house and came back with a new pc gaming rig from jbhifi. Through pc gaming I made lasting friendships, saved hundreds of dollars through steam, experienced amazing games and ended up here on facepunch.
I hope that the new wave of adds have a similar effect for others.
