So, advertising is the only thing companies spend their money on now, it seems. Because god forbid putting time into features and useful tools that people actually give a shit about!
I like your example... It shows how little you understand.
Someone said XBox gold is having to pay to use your internet. Well, no. You are paying to use the XBox service for its upkeep and content and what not. Is it overpriced? Eh, debatable. If you buy it by the year it isn't that bed... They have a ton of servers behind it that need upkeep and housing, so I see why they have a price.
However, with the introduction of more and more ads I feel that the cost should go down and down.
Your example says you hate paying for parking or everyone does. Yeah, sure it sucks, but that parking lot has to pay taxes and up keep. Notice how that parking lot probably doesn't have any pot holes and the lines are painted on nicely? That is because paying to park there pays for that.
Is parking in lots overpriced? Well, yes, people have space to offer they offer it for profit, not for free.
I used to get Xbox live and I hated shelling out $50 a year, but really... $50 a year is nothing, unless you literally have absolutely no money. Then you should probably be spending your time a little more wisely.
I find it incredibly irritating, I hate that you have to pay for it, so I am completely on board with calling it bullshit. But when I step back and try to think of why they charge for it, I am less upset.
The ps3 has all the multiplayer capabilities and multimedia shit that the 360 has. For free.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I actually really like the current Xbox UI. Just needs fewer ads.

Why don't they make LIVE free and gain the needed profit through ads then? Why should you have to pay money AND see ads?
And if they need the money then how does Sony manage to have 90 million people on PSN for free where LIVE only has 40 million and requires paying a subscription and ads?
How does Steam do it with 54 million?

Last time I logged into the Xbox website, my "Silver membership" wouldn't even let me send messages to friends. From what I heard, you can't even use Netflicks without a Gold membership.
What upkeep? You realize players are hosts and matches don't take place on actual servers, right? 3rd party publishers sure as hell don't get a cut of those Xbox Live fees either. Hell, a simple patch costs an arseload of money (that goes to Microsoft, as if the ads and fees didn't pay them enough) to release for a game on Xbox Live.
At least Valve actually owns some actual servers for players to play on.
Fuck xbox live, all the cool kids are using Miiverse
In all seriousness miiverse is actually pretty cool
:v:
But yeah miiverse is pretty kickass, but there are places to improve.

I am surprised that Media Center is not XBL Gold only. They just put the shitty services for both member levels, and make the apps that are usually free(Internet Explorer/surfing the internet, Youtube, FB, Twitter, Netflix) require XBL Gold.
I might just skip this generation if the next sony console isn't backwards compatible, or if you can't download PS3 games on their console.

Oh you
I don't understand how Microsoft gets away with live
You can pay for Playstation Plus on the PS3, but that nets you free games and shit for the same price as live iirc
The XBL fee pays for the multiplayer servers and other crap.
I'm not disagreeing, but informing
that doesn't explain how PC games have those and they are better with much more features that no console can even dream of
I have a 360 sitting about a foot and a half away from me, but haven't used it terribly much lately for things other than playing DVDs due to nothing much showing up to pique my interest. Yesterday I heard that a demo for the newest Dead Space is out, so I booted up the old thing and went searching for it.
I was surprised by the sheer volume of ads they crammed into each screen, sure. But you know what surprised me more? Non-gold members can't download the demo. But they don't actually tell you this. Non-gold members still have all the things on the screen which say "Go here to download the demo," but they simply don't have the download button at the final location.
If you don't have an account with a paid subscription, you can't download their advertisement for a game. And they send you on an endless wild goose chase through all of their other ad-drenched pages for believing that you could.
The New Hotness update for xbl changed my gaming life for the better.
One day I logged into xbl to discover that the interface had been completley overhauled, adds were widely more prevelant and it was forcing me to create a mii-esq avatar.
I turned off my console, left the house and came back with a new pc gaming rig from jbhifi. Through pc gaming I made lasting friendships, saved hundreds of dollars through steam, experienced amazing games and ended up here on facepunch.
I hope that the new wave of adds have a similar effect for others.
I do not even think they had ads back when they introduced the avatars.
I don't even notice the ads, if I do I don't sit their and say "why the fuck is there ads here", I just scroll on past. I have a xbox and a ps3, I play the xbox more since I have very few friends who own a ps3. I really do not see this as a big deal and honestly could care less. I play my xbox a few times a week with friends and it does not kill me to see a few ads for the mere seconds I am on the dashboard.

I think the next play station was not going to be backwards compatible due to the different CPU architecture. I mean the current ones are not even backwards compatible with ps2 games unless you got the very first ps3's which they stopped selling a few months after release.

This is correct, the next generation will be closer to PCs architecturally so there will be no backwards compatibility unless they create some sort of emulator (Which I doubt is they will do, I think the only reason the PS3 can emulate a PS1 is because it was a lot more simple to create an emulator for, it would be a huge job to get a PS3 emulator working and stable for all games)
I wonder and hope we get a new PS4 . ? and Xbox this year
