First UK University Announces New Fees - £8,500 Per Year

The only thing this is going to create is a wasteland of now defunct institutions that have lost a significant proportion of their students due to them going somewhere cheaper.
Still much cheaper than any university/college in America. So quit your bitching.

It seems to be big news for you all? I know the EU and UK have better funded programs that allow you to not bust your bank for the next 30 years.
But 9000GBP is only about $14000USD. Our collleges normally charge that amount (besides community) for 1 semester. And its very common to see private colleges charge $40,000+ a year.

I care.
[editline]28th March 2011[/editline]
Obviously not.
stop this shit
you can't compare tuition fees in the uk to tuition fees in the us, it doesn't work that way because of differing economic conditions which have already been mentioned in this thread.
I was originally planning on getting some baseline GCSE / BTEC qualifications and going for a couple of advanced courses at a Uni, but with all this debacle over fees I'm probably not going to be able to. I'll end up having to stay on at College / try and get some kind of work placement.
No one cares?
Well I do. According to google convertor I pay 28,000 euro a year for college. So please, quit your fucking bitching UK.
Imagine if your fee's suddenly tripled DESPITE the government that got voted in pledging not to increase them.

alright imagine if you had to pay 84,000 euros, after voting in a party that said they wouldn't
I don't think it's too unreasonable to make cuts especially in an economic recession since you can just pay any loans back with a better job
So is it reasonable that students can expect to pay back almost double the amount they were originally loaned?
I don't think it's too unreasonable to make cuts especially in an economic recession since you can just pay any loans back with a better job
The real anger is coming from Clegg outright lying that he wouldn't increase the fees. Hell, his entire election campaign practically revolved around this, and as such he got the student vote.
then he got into number 10 and was like "lolnope, cough up 9k/year"

If Clegg had said "yeah we might have to raise the cap" beforehand then people would have grumbled rather than smash shop windows and throw fire extinguishers off roofs
Besides the fact that we pay a lot more for accommodation, rent, tax, after university tax, higher interest rates and general living.
So, overall, it works out very similar, if not more.
Rent is around $10,000 a year here while at a university and we have to pay a shitload more for health care, which bitchslaps any petty expense you may incur
[editline]28th March 2011[/editline]
But regardless, I feel for you. Quadruple expenses must be difficult to face.
Shouldn't education be free?
America V England debate no matter what, please stop bitching about it, it is fucking annoying and will never end because no one is ever really right nor wrong although you all wittle away many hours on here attempting to eliminate any opposition to your personal views, which will never ever happen, so quit it.

Did I imply that anywhere? You're in an economic recession, the government has a hard time paying everything off, and everyone complains about high gas taxes and high VAT, of course if taxes aren't high for the rich in your country because of the influx of conservatism you're gonna have to pay for what the govt can't provide. What the government is doing is responding to all the conservatism that seems to be all so common whenever I see anything related to Britain. Besides, with a better job from going to university, you won't have too hard of a time paying off said loans anyway.

This is my city:

The Lib Dems lost every seat they had to Labour - apart from the Sheffield Hallam seat, which is the student community where both Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University are. They are where they are now because of the Student votes.

What did I just say?
Sweden just introduced fees for foreign students. Taking a 3 year Astronomy programme (as an example) will cost outside students £41247, which is 420000 SEK.
It's free for Swedes though (hehe)
Wow there goes my hope to going to university in Sweden, fuck my life!
What did I just say?
That what the universities are doing is unreasonable. It may be unethical but it certainly isn't too much of a bother in the end.
Scotland.
I'll graduate a year before I can become a citizen, I think. :frown:
Jesus, that's about what Indiana University charges in-state students per year. Now your education is just as expensive as ours.

Of course it's going to be a bother; going to university doesn't magically present you with a job that shits infinite amounts of cash into your pocket. ~£40k worth of debt that will turn into ~£60-70k over several decades is going to be a massive burden for the vast majority of graduates.
Still much cheaper than any university/college in America. So quit your bitching.
We pay more tax. Accommodation costs more. Food costs more. Fuel costs more. Transport costs more.
Do the research before you spew out shit.

That's but a thorn side compared to how much going to college nets you in increased wages and considering that you have your entire life to pay it off and debt - and associated interest - decreases as you pay it off. It's not going to net you a magical get-rich job but once you do land a job you'll be far better off than however much debt a college loan pulls you down.
Hell, I don't agree with it either, but I don't think it's that much of a college-killing concern as a lot of people point it out to be.

Completely different situations. In the UK (and most (all?) of Europe) it is mostly government (ie tax) funded with small (at the moment) fees on top to make up for any short fall in funding.
People in the US would complain if there was a sudden (government forced) 2-300% price increase in tuition fees.
Most people are annoyed with this because the current government is using education (in general) as a way to avoid having to make cuts in places they do not wish to. On top of this, one of the parties in the collation based most of their campaign around NOT raising tuition fees if they were to get into power. It is one of the reasons that in a lot of peoples opinions they got so many seats.

"Our system is completely fucked and sucks balls so stop whining when your system gets worse."
It's ok though when you get a degree companies are begging you to work for them and throwing money in your wallet and hire you without even looking at your CV or sex offenders registry because you have a degree.

I've missed you.
And I didn't think it was possible for the English population to get more stupid.
It's funny because the Scots and the Welsh can go free and we pay for it.
