New York City bans large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters
are you even trying at this point or are you just justifying the law by saying "you can drink at home" while ignoring how useless and ineffective it is not to mention hypocritical of the idea that you can be a big boy and choose your own substances (as long as its not soda!)
We're going to open up a whole new industry of underground large soda sales!
[editline]14th September 2012[/editline]
We'll be rich!
Nobody really knows what to do about the sugary drinks. They are designed so that the more vulnerable get hooked to them. I'm not saying you should straight out ban the stuff, but there isn't any real moving incentive within the market at the minute to flush them out in order to be replaced by healthier alternatives.

I disagree that this is just a feel good law. I think this is a step in the right direction and nyc should go farther to curb obesity.

We take precaution with HIV, I don't see why we can't do the same with obesity.

Precautions are fine.
Passing a silly law that infringes on what somebody is doing to their own body isn't.
Sure, you could easily circumvent it, but then that just makes it a waste of legislation, time, and money.
there's a point where the movie theater soft drink is blatantly unhealthy to consume by yourself (gallon of sprite anyone)
however, if someone wants to drink a gallon of sprite over two hours, i have no problem with that

That's like saying anyone who likes Wine watches Fraiser
They do though, I find Chablis and Gruyer compliments Season-3 and Season-2
I'd rather judges be able to order obese people to lose their weight as they do with sending alcoholics to rehab
Rather is not a verb.
It'd be like banning the sales of gasoline at more then ten gallons at a time. You could still fill up your tank, it'd just take multiple purchases. In other words, it's a stupid idea.
It's not supposed to prevent you from drinking so much, it is supposed to hinder you in drinking so much. Why is this so hard to understand?

You are still free to drink as much as you can.
The law doesn't ban drinking huge amounts, it bans selling huge amounts. That's a difference.

Legalize Smack.

I do understand. The hindrance is stupid and unnecessary. Why is that so hard to understand?
that would be terrible
most dietitians are idiots
Most people are even bigger idiots when it comes to eating healthy.
aw man I'm so fat if only everyone was legally forbid from purchasing food, that'd make me stop purchasing food
Restrictions are so damn stupid.. do you these people honestly think they've done anything to help obesity? People that are fat are going to be fat no matter what, if they want to drink pop and eat fast food, they're going to, one way or another. The only way to stop obesity is for the obese person in question to make the choice themselves, fucking stupid shit. I would never drink any soda, or ever recommend someone to, but this isn't the way to improve anything.
Yey more aspartame for everyone.
As if banning sodas from public places will prevent obesity. Fucking dumb restrictions.
I do understand. The hindrance is stupid and unnecessary. Why is that so hard to understand?
Because your reasoning makes no sense.
The logic is simple:
- People get too fat
- A main part of it: one big seize makes you eat/drink more than 2 small, half seizes, that is a proven fact
- Conclusion: Cut down the seizes so people start drinking as much as they want to, not as much as their subconcious "I need to finish this or else it is wasted" programming tells them to

ITT: Cynic Fatalists ignore any real world approaches to problems
And it still won't work
If they really wanted, they'd just buy two drinks
well at least they can't buy two large drinks!!!
and probably not anyway since two regular sized drinks are still too expensive nobodys gonna do that
its a good idea really
you dont need a MASSIVE drink, seriously.
I eat way too many chips.
Can the government ban chips for me? I'm to lazy to stop eating them myself.
I live in NYC and I have no problems with this and I hope that this does take a big step in fighting obesity. There are plenty of alternatives to soda which are much more refreshing and better for you. And its not like its banning soda entirely, just large sizes of them.
To the people defending movies theaters: I don't know about you guys but here, movie tickets already cost between $9-11 and its more if the movie is in 3D. And the concession stands? $4.50 for a small drink. Fuck that. Theres barely anything ever out thats worth that much to watch anyway.
If this was a ban on all sodas entirely, then we would have all right to be upset. But did people bug out when fast food places stopped selling super sized portions of fatty shit? No. What's the problem with trying to promote a healthier lifestyle?

The problem is that instead of doing something effective they are passing useless laws like this. Taking away a couple extra sips of soda from someone isn't going to do shit to help anyone.

What would be more effective than this? Banning the drinks entirely? We've already seen what happens with that type of method.
Fuck you New York.
They'll arrest you for that next.

Movie theaters don't decide how much tickets cost and they barely see a dime of ticket profits.
Literally 90% of Movie Theater income is the concession stand, hence why everything is so inflated.

You think 9-11$ is a lot??

Perhaps promoting community exercise programs or at least looking into something that is actually effective.
If you ask me all snacks should be banned from movie theatres. Why do people feel the need to eat while watching a movie?
its not gonna hinder shit, all of the movie theaters i know give free refills, so its just a matter of walking out of the theater for a few secs to fill up and bam, circumvented
Then what is your problem with this? People are not gonna walk out of the movie for a refill.
Perhaps promoting community exercise programs or at least looking into something that is actually effective.
You can do both?
by a large soda what are we talking about, a US fatty measurement with those super sizes? Or is it a normal large cup for the rest of the world?
If you ask me all snacks should be banned from movie theatres. Why do people feel the need to eat while watching a movie?
Because people like food. Why do people feel a need to watch movies? Ban movies.
Then what is your problem with this? People are not gonna walk out of the movie for a refill.

Even if you can still get refills or buy two drinks or whatever, the ban is still a problem because it's a waste of resources.
Time and money could be spent passing something that is actually beneficial to society. Rather than something that will have no effect on anything other than pissing people off.
Don't see the harm in it. It's a soft regolution as opposed to a hard one. (soft as in merely influences behaviour as opposed to ordains it)

It's actually most likely going to have a pretty strong effect. Most people won't buy 2 or more bottles to get the same ammount. They'll still buy just a single one.
