Chelsea Manning to receive military 'gender treatment'

I think she looks hot in that wig.
cant say I've ever seen someone abbreviate private as 'pte' before.
it's not a 'right' in any sense of the word
Well a right to good health is a basic human right, and if mutilation and/or hormone treatment is an effective way to acquire good health, then it is the right thing to do.
If they concluded that gender therapy is the most effective way of dealing with Chelsea's condition.
Then they should do it. And they should pay.
i'd be more concerned about the person whos getting angry over something like this' mental health
Just because you accept the counter-intuitive concept of transgenderism, does not mean that non-acceptance is a form of insanity.
That said, personally, I don't think transgenderism is wrong. But, it's a reasonably hard pill to swallow... And I understand some peoples reactions.
Fair enough on that one, what I think should be a right does not equate to what legally is one.
EDIT: Actually no fuck that not having this treatment is a danger to her mental health, and I'm pretty sure they have to treat risks to a person's mental health in prison. If they don't, that's a huge flaw in the prison system.
Yes, Mental Health is so black and white because HRT is the only way to treat gender related Mental illness (it's not).
as much as I am for personal freedoms and equality for everyone no matter their self identity, it's not a 'right' in any sense of the word and arguing for this on the basis of being a basic human necessity is hurtful to these kinds of cases
Fair enough, I should've put it down as "should be a basic human right".
Still her actions still stand.
HRT is the only way to treat gender related Mental illness (it's not).
It isn't. But it is probably cheaper than constant psych therapy... and the alternative drug treatment would probably effect the mind without satisfying the patients wants, to the point where it is detrimental to their health and well being.

Also, way better for PR.
I don't think gender identity is #1 for the government to be concerned about when you leak info and are serving 35. Just saying.

You should properly do some research on transsexuals before you make any baseless claims. It isn't a mental illness and no amount of therapy can solve transsexuality. Everything you just mentioned completely ignores all the research showing transsexuals have brains matching their preferred gender. It's the same as saying homosexuality is a mental illness and they should get therapy to be straight rather than just accept it which has been proven many times to not work.
Also, way better for PR.
Yeah this is very true.
The alternative, oppressive techniques such as unwanted conditioning and drugging would result in a large uproar from Chelsea's supporters.
Chelsea would have to agree with whatever treatment. I think.
Fair enough, I should've put it down as "should be a basic human right".

No they don't considering there are numerous federal and military related programs to whistle blowing which he outright ignored and went the most over the top way (releasing info to wiki leaks).
military grade gender treatment....
that just sounds bad
Sex is the package you were born with.
Gender is what you identify as.
It's good form to address a person according to the gender he or she identifies as. Otherwise you're just not very nice.
If a man looks and sounds like a man, I'll refer to them as "him".
If a woman looks and sounds like a woman, I'll refer to them as "her".

What really gets my goat is when people try and force others to refer to them as the opposite gender (or worse, some made up gender) when they still look and sound like the gender they don't identify with. Makes you look like an idiot when you're talking to others about them, especially people who don't know them or just don't care for all this SJW shit.

They never said "Military Grade". It's just hormone treatment.

If it causes impairment in social, interpersonal, occupational or daily function it is Mental Illness. That's not saying there's anything wrog with being transgender but if being transgender is the source of your problems then you have gender dysphoria which is a mental illness. Let me reiterate so you can't confuse what I'm saying, there's NOTHING wrong with being transgender, but if it is the root cause of your struggle then you have a mental illness called gender dysphoria.

Fun fact: I don't quite look like a man, but I don't quite look like a woman. I was born with a vagina, but being called "her" makes me cringe and depending on how depressed I am, curl up in a ball and sob quietly. I'm not lucky in the aspect of being able to get on hormones.
Pte Manning has been diagnosed by military doctors with gender dysphoria, the sense of one's gender being at odds with the sex assigned at birth
Huh, never knew it was an actual mental disorder.
or would it be a physical disorder?
What causes gender dysphoria?
The exact cause of gender dysphoria is unclear.
It was traditionally thought to be a psychiatric condition, with its causes believed to originate in the mind.
However, more recent research suggests the condition may actually be the result of the abnormal development of a baby while it is in the womb, possibly as a result of genetic or hormonal factors, which causes the brain to develop a gender identity that is different to the baby's sexual organs.
Read more about the causes of gender dysphoria.
Taken from the NHS website http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/gender-dysphoria/Pages/Introduction.aspx
Therefore even gender dysphoria isn't a mental illness.

In that case I'd refer to you based on your name.
If you've a unisex name and people can't tell if you're male or female, I'd say that would be one of the few occasions where it's acceptable to refer to the person according to there preference, although still limited to "him" or "her".

My birth name is indeed unisex, while my chosen name is male.

So do you pressure others into calling you a "he"? Or do you consider their language as unsuitable for gender ambiguity?
So do you pressure others into calling you a "he"? Or do you consider their language as unsuitable for gender ambiguity?
The only people I'm really around are my family. My mother has already established that she thinks I'm "full of shit" and "(doesn't) understand it and (refuses) to understand it". I would strongly prefer to be called "he", and generally, people I talk to online do, or if they're uncomfortable avoid using pronouns in general.

there's nothing special or complex about respecting one's preferred pronouns. you just do it. if you're trying to overthink it then i kinda wonder how you function around other people

it's kind of hilarious that you're concerned about looking like an idiot for addressing people the way they ask you to when you're making posts like this

What's with the weird bracketing? It's a shame that a family member thinks your pretty much bull shitting. That's a lack of trust on her part. Bound to push you away.

It's nice that you found a community that accepts you for how you feel. But how do you feel about those who are uncomfortable with addressing you as a "he"?

that's good to know, internet tough guy. but what would you actually do in real life? probably say nothing, because you're just a baby.

Throwback from college. When you were quoting someone and needed to change the wording, you'd put the changed work in parentheses. And yes, it has pushed me away. I don't really trust her now.
It's nice that you found a community that accepts you for how you feel. But how do you feel about those who are uncomfortable with addressing you as a "he"?
I've been selective in who I tell. Those that are uncomfortable are mainly because they've known me for several years, and so I can understand the reasoning. It's unfair to expect a person to immediately get things right and understand, so I'm willing to try to explain, but it's different when they get things wrong maliciously.

you sound like one of those people that have no problems changing what pronouns you use for a dog when corrected, but when a person corrects you you keep being a huge tool
