I have a cousin in Key West, I hope she does ok :(
I have a cousin in Key West, I hope she does ok :(
Keys are relatively unaffected.
I have a cousin in Key West, I hope she does ok :(
The hurricane is past them by now. They're probably getting weather but nothing serious. Any damage they'd get probably already happened this morning.
Walt Disney World closed, apparently. Supposedly, that's only happened 3 previous times.
cant imagine the storms in 5 10 years time
SCAD Savannah evacuated early today but I went up to Atlanta yesterday. I'm really glad my dorm room is on the top floor of a building that's almost entirely concrete. Also a good thing to come out of not bringing my car down yet. I do hope people are safe in but from the looks of things it'd be pretty dumb if you were to stay.
Currently evacuating on scad bus 3. I live off campus so hopefully my house stays in one piece. I'm glad they are letting me bring my cat otherwise I might have just tried to wait it out.
Palm Beach FPer here, 3 miles from coastline. It's kinda passed, hopefully for good The storm is predicted to be cat3 by the time it actually makes landfall. Uhh. Why the actual fuck are they making it sound so goddamn dangerous? Causing panic and backing people up on highways is what's happening. That's whats going to be dangerous.
i had neighbors putting up shutters over their windows and shit. we had some rain/wind that was no heavier than it would be on a regular rainy day.
Bluh I hope everything goes alright. This is my first hurricane after moving out and of course it's gotta be fucking insane. I'm relatively far inland out of the evacuation zones and I'm living in a concrete-block apartment building but I live alone and if something goes wrong I'm just... going to have to deal with it. People were going absolutely apeshit at the gas stations and Walmart a couple of days ago. It's like everyone in Florida becomes four times more of an asshole (and that's saying something) when shit goes down. I got shoved by an old guy at a gas station after he tried to cut in line at the pump and a woman took a loaf of bread out of my cart at the store right in front of me while I was buying supplies. :T
Why the actual fuck are they making it sound so goddamn dangerous? Causing panic and backing people up on highways is what's happening. That's whats going to be dangerous.
because people love overreacting for tv ratings
West coast here, we got light rain, but some decent winds, hang in there those who couldn't evacuate in time over on the east coast. My college professor is over there reporting to my class on facebook, he's having the time of his life and we're all like "BE CAREFUL SIR".
I'm near the UCF area and my friend wanted to go back to our homes near Tampa. Now that we're well out of harm's way, the news is that our side of the county is suggesting evacuation and our old high school is open as a shelter. This is a gross overreaction for a completely safe region.
The damn gas stations ran out of fuel and bottled water/canned food is down to almost nothing...and I live 20 miles east from central SC. :V I can only imagine how it is further near the coast. Our complex already issued us sandbags for the flooding (probably prepping since we had a huge flood last year), but it's still ridiculous. The highway right down the road is open on both sides for the coastal peeps evacuating, and never have I seen people outside their cars in lawn chairs chilling in the middle of a highway before.
because people love overreacting for tv ratings
Good ol' Weather Channel. [t]https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/12022607_1027711087260027_2598948426048482665_o.jpg[/t]
Because if they didn't, and it turned out to be the worst storm of the century, they would be held accountable for not warning people.
And the more over hyped they make it, the less seriously people will take it in the future. It's long term self destructive to their image and credibility.
Still has yet to make landfall anywhere. Not quite sure where or even if it will. It's just kinda skirting along the coast. [editline]6th October 2016[/editline] Pretty fortunate that it's not just slamming right into Florida.
And the more over hyped they make it, the less seriously people will take it in the future. It's long term self destructive to their image and credibility.
Until the worst actually happens. Then they can say "I told you so!" and gain it back and then some. The whole goal is to get people to get out of bad areas and stay safe. This has been a very effective way to do it. [editline]7th October 2016[/editline]
The storm is predicted to be cat3 by the time it actually makes landfall. Uhh.
Until the worst actually happens. Then they can say "I told you so!" and gain it back and then some.
That line of thinking is dependent on people getting killed after failing to listen to them because "it was no big deal the last (number) times".
The most recent prediction (11PM EST) shows a pretty dramatic turn to the east, as well as a slight weakening (120 from 135) which is very good news for everybody near the coast and me.
That line of thinking is dependent on people getting killed after failing to listen to them because "it was no big deal the last (number) times".
Except the alternative is not stressing it enough and people still getting killed for thinking it won't be a big deal. Proper hurricanes are far enough apart that you can still make people fear them consistently, especially with a big one like this. The governors and the NOAA are saying this'll be a catastrophic event, it isn't just media hype.

There have been storms in the past where more people have died in the process of evacuating than died as a result of the storm.

As long as the eye stays over the water, rain is all you really got to worry about. If you're in an area prone to flash flooding, you're going to be affected for sure. The west side of a hurricane is just like a regular severe thunderstorm. But with less lightning and thunder, and more rain [editline]6th October 2016[/editline] Oh, also Typical Fox. It almost doesn't even sound like a joke because of how often it actually happens. Seeing this clip with the rest of Shep, I honestly can't tell if it is a joke or if it's actually Fox. When are they going to fire Shepard?
Aaaaannnd the politics have already begun http://www.politico.com/story/2016/10/clinton-campaign-florida-voter-registration-hurricane-229249
That line of thinking is dependent on people getting killed after failing to listen to them because "it was no big deal the last (number) times".
That's what happened here with Rita and Ike. Rita was almost a push-over, where more people died trying to evacuate than from the storm. So when Ike was coming, a lot of people ignored it. I remember the news showing people having hurricane parties on the coast just before landfall. Then I didn't see anything for a week because we had no power. (about 90 miles from the coast). When we finally got TV back we saw those same coastal communities completely wiped off the map. That kind of ruined the ~hurricane party~ fun for me. People are still missing. I evacuate (from the coast) regardless now. [editline]6th October 2016[/editline] However, there's an obvious difference between a storm like Ike and Matthew. Matt would be a hell of a lot more dangerous if it made a direct landfall and subjugated populations to the worst of the storm. The way its skirting along now is probably going to make people disregard future warnings. Have some surge predictions:
When are they going to fire Shepard?
Shepard is the only reason to watch Fox.
Shepard is the only reason to watch Fox.
Which is why Fox is going to kick him off
There is a line where it's overkill, and we're hitting that line. There have been storms in the past where more people have died in the process of evacuating than died as a result of the storm.
It isn't overkill. If this actually hits Florida, which it still might tomorrow afternoon the way the projections keep changing every hour, the unlucky city it makes landfall at would be devastated. The thing was powerful enough to do some damage to the Bahamas and ruin part of Haiti. Throw that at a coastal city like Daytona Beach and you got serious problems. The only person that died was some dude in South Carolina who was killed for shooting at a group of deputies while evacuating. The evacuation has been remarkably well handled.
Finally caved and am crashing at a buddies place a little further inland. I'm guessing my condo will be underwater when I get back. Fun.
I'm in Orlando. Pretty boring thus far. By the sounds of it, the morning is when it'll really be fun.
