that would likely be a mess, i'm pretty sure they've tried that before, it would be in their best interests to do so.
or maybe they really want to sell 8 quid microUSB adapters, but i don't think it's the big money maker
[editline]24th July 2012[/editline]
no because "digital information" isn't a thing. the USB data is USB packet info.

can you really expect that to send USB data? not gonna happen! you'd need an entire computer processing and transferring USB data. That's unreasonable.
again, you can't have USB packets flying around without a computer processing USB data. With your solution these cheap ipod controls or video cables could not exist.
and analogue audio can't go through a digital port, you know that.
Don't those earphones plug into the 3.5 jack?
Well, all the other phones seem to have solved that nasty "analog" problem by including a 3.5" jack.
it makes docking easier because you don't have to have a big 3.5" jack sticking out of your product.
basically my point is that the dock connector isn't there just because apple wanted to say FUCK YOU. it's there for a reason.
i know cynicism makes that hard to admit, but take my word for it.

not all of them, and certain if you use one of these they don't:

And such a large expensive object can't handle a USB controller?
And such a large expensive object can't handle a USB controller?
no there's no computer in it dude. in order for USB to work you need a computer.
it's not that big either, i have one (i bought it second hand, no way am i paying full price for it.)
And such a large expensive object can't handle a 3.5 mm plug sticking up in the dock connector?
And such a large expensive object can't handle a 3.5 mm plug sticking up in the dock connector?
again, it's not large, and it does more than play audio. you can adjust volume and change songs using the remote.
what the fuck why am i being interrogated? the dock connector serves a purpose if you don't like it send an angry email towards Apple and don't buy their products!
put a microusb
put a special analog video/audio magical dock connector beside the microusb
all problems solved world hunger ended nobody dies ever again
sounds like they just want to suck some fucking money up and not use micro usb like a smart person would.
Christ Apple why do you need more money
what the fuck why am i being interrogated? the dock connector serves a purpose if you don't like it send an angry email towards Apple and don't buy their products!
lol u mad bro?
you can adjust volume and change songs using the remote.
Didn't Apple already invent a way to do this with extra rings on the 3.5mm jack?
again, it's not large, and it does more than play audio. you can adjust volume and change songs using the remote.

only volume.
only volume.
No, you can skip tracks as well. Hell, my Galaxy S2 supports that as well.
so then all Apple needs is MHL and they're good to go without a dock
so then all Apple needs is MHL and they're good to go without a dock
that's still a different port however.
that's still a different port however.
No it isn't

except it's exclusively MHL, not USB and there's also that 11 pin connector.
that's not really a better solution over the Apple dock.
except it's exclusively MHL, not USB and there's also that 11 pin connector.

Except it doubles as a USB connector, and the need for some extra adapter/cable goes away.
Except it doubles as a USB connector, and the need for some extra adapter/cable goes away.
well it says that there is a connector that's not cross-compatible, plus you also need a specific receiver or display.
Except it doubles as a USB connector, and the need for some extra adapter/cable goes away.
Only the 5 pin variant, and it's an either or thing (You can't use MHL at the same time as you're using USB), the 11 pin variant allows both to be used at the same time, but it's a custom connector.
Edit: And if Apple went MHL/USB, you'd have the same issue of having a custom connector, or a device that didn't have full functionality (Wouldn't be able to plug it into your TV and control it via the remote, etc.)

So is the 5-pin, neither are part of the MHL specification. The only down side of the 11-pin USB connector is that it probably doesn't meet the official USB specification.
From reading Wikipedia I got the idea that the 5 pin variant was just a micro USB plug (Micro USB is 5 pin as well), the 11 pin variant wouldn't resemble USB at all (Apart from having the data/power lines, which the Apple dock connector also has, but that doesn't make it USB, etc.)

I had thought it was an official USB adapter on the SIII but I can't find any information on it.
Edit:
Seems like it can take ordinary USB cables, judging by the fact nothing says otherwise.
So if I buy an iPhone 5, I'll have to buy all new music players, because the docks won't fit it.
:\
there will be adaptors, unless they're that dimwitted.
Welp, there goes my car head unit.
Apple could have just turned the existing dock into USB3 spec - the impending shit-storm from the masses when this mini dock goes public will be insane.
It'd be great if they go to the same microUSB port everyone else is using. My mom has an iPhone 4 and it's bloody annoying when I need to charge my Droid 3 in her car. We have to keep a second USB cable in the center console. If that damned iPhone had a standard microUSB we wouldn't have that problem.
Standards, apple. Fucking use them.
Oh no, a second cable.
Micro USB is a pretty flimsy connector on many devices, one of the only good things about the 30 pin dock connector is how sturdy it is.
That's stupid.

I've never had any issues with mine. What are you doing to your devices that the microUSB cable can't stay in?
I've never had any issues with mine. What are you doing to your devices that the microUSB cable can't stay in?
I agree, my phone falls on the ground by my bed all the time and I use the cable to pull it up.
