Eh, their music hurts my head and their appearance is visually assaulting. Never been a fan of strange for the sake of strange.
They were good for a laugh and the shock value, got old quick though.
They were alright, imo. Not everything they put out was purely just for shock value. I dunno if breakup is a good term since this was planned long ago according to the article, I'd say disband, but whatever.
i wonder what chappie thinks of his parents divorcing
south african, claims they created their own genre of music, was asked by lady gaga to open for her and they told her to fuck off and then featured her character wearing a meat dress in africa getting a giant insect in her vagina and then getting eaten by a lion. thats about it
that sentence was a wild ride from start to finish.
Only vaguely heard their name maybe once ever, article in OP saying they're two of the biggest names in music is more of a giant leap than just a stretch
Only vaguely heard their name maybe once ever, article in OP saying they're two of the biggest names in music is more of a giant leap than just a stretch
I'd say among people who are really into music they're quite a big name, not just those who listen to music a lot, but actively follow music in general. Think the kind of guy that would listen to Anthony fantano regularly. like death grips for example was never super mainstream but among music nerds they were very well known

What the fuck...
was asked by lady gaga to open for her and they told her to fuck off and then featured her character wearing a meat dress in africa getting a giant insect in her vagina and then getting eaten by a lion.
Looks like I found a reason to like Die Antwoord.
pretty crazy counter-culture music project from these two, they really went all out on it and it paid off for them. this was them before, during another music project, by the way interested to see what they do next. definitely a unique couple.
Noooo, i went to their concert and it was fuckin awesome (yolandi flashed a couple of times too) and i've been following them for years.
Girlfriend loves this band. She'll be bummed to hear this. Not really my kind of music, but they have a couple of weird/fun songs. Yolandi has such a unique voice that it at least makes them interesting to listen to.
I feel like being counter-culture specifically to be counter-culture is a flawed idea.
Had a chance to see them last year, but sadly my stomach acted up big time, and I ended up spending a comparable time on a festival toilet, while my friends went to the concert. Supposedly it was pretty great.
I feel like being counter-culture specifically to be counter-culture is a flawed idea.
I see nothing particularly counter-culture about them. They're as mainstream as Lady Gaga. Even Burning Man is disgustingly mainstream now. Katy Perry and Paris Hilton go to Burning Man... just to give you an idea. [editline]10th September 2016[/editline] If anything, the Sturgis motorcycle rally is still pretty close to its roots unlike Burning Man, because of the ongoing social stigma around bikers, and because you'll never caught Katy Perry or Paris Hilton hanging out with a bunch of smelly, hairy bikers.
i have no interest in them whatsoever but being happy that a band broke up just because you don't listen to them seems pretty fucking retarded come on guys
At least we still have Little Big. :v:
what i find funny is how the common reception to die antwoord is a median split of 'who the hell is die antwoord' and 'WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU NEVER HEARD OF DIEANTWOORD' with almost nothing in between. On one hand theyre completely obscure, on the other hand they're apparently 'two of the biggest names in music'. Shit's bipolar.
Huh, I'm surprised to hear people disliked them Either way can't deny that they nailed the style they were going for.
Who? [editline]10th September 2016[/editline] I've never heard any of those names.
i love die antwoord. truth is, they're probably not going to stop making music. ninja and yo-landi have been working together under several names for over a decade. but even if they do stop, we still have all the other people they've influenced and worked with, such as jack parrow. got to see die antwoord in 2015, and it was pretty great. ninja has a pretty powerful stage presence, dj hi-tek is a fat mother fucker, and yo-landi's was doing whatever the hell you can call what she does. i get that they're not for everyone, but some of you are irrationally angry at them for seemingly no reason. chill out. they're going away now, so let it all go. it'll be over soon.
They're either coming straight back under different names or just waiting a year and then being Antwoord again. The whole point of Antwoord was to make fun of the music industry overall.
Exit the Ninja
They ruined chappie for one thing.
I think they did pretty good in Chappie, especially the girl. They fit their roles well at least, for what it's worth.
I don't mind their music but they seem like wholly unlikeable people
I know nothing about the band or the singers themselves, but I couldn't stand their characters in the movie Chappie. Not that the movie was any good to begin with, but their unlikable performance certainly didn't help.
I wouldn't call them "hopelessly obscure" if they've recently been in a big budget movie, had one of their songs on Far Cry 3's soundtrack, and their albums consistently do pretty well on the charts.
oh yea, them being in Chappie really sets them apart lol
Saw this on Facebook:
UPDATE 10/09/16: Contrary to numerous media reports, it appears as if Die Antwoord are not actually breaking up. Yo-Landi has just shared an Instagram post, calling out the journalist who originally reported on their supposed breakup for “twisting their words”. However she has confirmed that the groups fifth album will also be their last so go figure. Either way, it looks like the zeefest rap krew this side of South Africa will live to zef another day! And star in their own feature film?! Read more at http://musicfeeds.com.au/news/die-antwoord-breaking-next-year/#QDlGEmeLIzosdCjZ.99
I had only heard of them in passing from Facepunch and Chappie, but my sister apparently knew a shit ton about them, and she usually listens to more mainstream stuff. For an "obscure" group, they really know how to get their music out there.
