Then the UK has fucking retarded hate speech laws and hardly even have free speech. Not really. Hate speech: "We all need to go and murder these fucking towelheads" Free speech: "I hate towelheads and think they should go back to their fucking country" Notice how one incites violence, and one doesn't?
Both are offensive and condescending. You clearly like being bitter to other people.
Both are offensive and condescending. You clearly like being bitter to other people.
I'm allowed to since my nation has free speech.
it's illegal to punish someone for their actions while not on school grounds, plain and simple.
my friend's ex made a facebook event telling people to wear red clothing to their school, the girl who made the event got suspended the next day.
I'm allowed to since my nation has free speech.
Then your law is a joke. The fact is, when everybody gets along without offending one another, then everybody is happy. If you aren't happy, get over your problem and find something that makes you happy.
Why do you sound so sadistic when talking about a happy festival. You really have a lot of hate in you.
He does put up a good point though. Why should Jewish people get so pissed when we say Merry Christmas - after all, if a Jew came up to me and said "Happy Hanukkah" I wouldn't care enough to lose my shit or anything.
I'm allowed to since my nation has free speech.
Well I hope you are killed by Muslim terrorists. Is that allowed, or over the line?
i don't believe that a school should be able to suspend a student for something done outside of school regardless of the action unless it represents a legitimate threat to students (ie, murder or aggravated assault)
He does put up a good point though. I'm happy that people are happy. There is no source for anger besides, here even atheists celebrate christmas.
I think she should've been slapped upside the head more than suspended, it might knock some sense into her that using words that others might find offensive is pretty stupid.
I'm allowed to since my nation has free speech.
i'm fairly certain its illegal.
I'm allowed to since my nation has free speech.
Okay, so hate speech without incitement of violence completely falls within the purview of free speech, while hate speech that incites violence is not? Why should I not be allowed to threaten you, why isn't that free speech? I would think something is wrong with free speech if people are allowed to have bill-boards proclaiming that black people should be slaves, but inciting violence should be punishable.
I think she should've been slapped upside the head more than suspended, it might knock some sense into her that using words that others might find offensive is pretty stupid.
yeah! the school should've hit her! thats a perfect discipline, school won't get sued or anything.
And I fail to see how the girl can give the comment "I was suspended for what I believe in". You can't just say "Go back to your country" and get away with it. If she had been nice about it, then people would be happy. "Merry fucking Christmas" is her notion.
it's illegal to punish someone for their actions while not on school grounds, plain and simple.
so you're saying, if a kid talks to another student on facebook saying "oh im going to bring a gun to school tomorrow and shoot that one kid" and the student who was told that reports it to the principal, its illegal?
I think she should've been slapped upside the head more than suspended, it might knock some sense into her that using words that others might find offensive is pretty stupid.
What are you, a cracker?
yeah! the school should've hit her! thats a perfect discipline, school won't get sued or anything.
I too hate jokes and take life seriously, have you ever had a friend that said something so stupid that they just sighed and everyone kind of face palmed a bit? Or like in slapstick shows where a character would say something stupid and then be tapped on the side of the head?
Then your law is a joke. The fact is, when everybody gets along without offending one another, then everybody is happy. If you aren't happy, get over your problem and find something that makes you happy.
Is the UK literally teeming to the brim with Fascists, or is it just you? By your logic the Occupy Protests should be suppressed because they incite hatred towards wall street bankers and therefore don't fall under free speech. All these hate speech laws do is allow the government to make up definitions of what is hateful and who is deserving to be protected from hate with absolutely no accountability. That's totalitarianism, not freedom. [editline]11th December 2011[/editline]
so you're saying, if a kid talks to another student on facebook saying "oh im going to bring a gun to school tomorrow and shoot that one kid" and the student who was told that reports it to the principal, its illegal?
It would actually be illegal and very unsafe for the principal to try and suspend the student. If what the person was doing legitimately compromised the safety of the school, then they are obliged to call the police. By the way, reporting something to the principal isn't illegal, and he never said it was. He said it was illegal for the principle to punish someone for actions not taken on school grounds, which certainly should be illegal.
Is the UK literally teeming to the brim with Fascists, or is it just you?
Over here, nobody cares. In fact it's a law in colleges to not bring religion into the classroom. Not really, but it's not advised.
fascism? sure thing dickhead, bit rich for a country with Guantanamo and warrantless wiretaps obviously you're too nutzo to argue with so I give up
here even atheists celebrate christmas.
Too true. I don't think any of our family have even been to a church in the last 10 years bar a few baptisms of some parts of the family, but it's always fun to put up a tree and exchange wrapped gifts.
People are actually offended by the phrase "Merry Christmas?" Wow, what. Most of us aren't offended by Ramadan or whatever, but they get offended over Christmas? Sick bastards.
Who cares if people aren't true christians or whatever. As long as people are happy, why the arguement? It's a time when people get their mind off bullshit.
fascism? sure thing dickhead, bit rich for a country with Guantanamo and warrantless wiretaps obviously you're too nutzo to argue with so I give up
At least we are free to express our minds, unlike the rest of the "civilized" world.
calling the police would still be punishing the student.
The police would be, not the principal and not the school. There is absolutely nothing punishing about reporting a possible safety concern to law enforcement.
At least we are free to express our minds, unlike the rest of the "civilized" world.
You're free to say you want the president dead?
You're free to say you want the president dead?
Yup, we are. [editline]11th December 2011[/editline] That might get an investigation by the Secret Service or other law enforcement if posted publicly, but wouldn't result in charges if there is no conspiracy to kill the president, and it isn't directly calling for someone to kill the president.
All these hate speech laws do is allow the government to make up definitions of what is hateful and who is deserving to be protected from hate with absolutely no accountability.
Considering that the hate speech laws (at least in Canada) are subject to the Charter, which cannot be amended, and that Charter is then interpreted by the Supreme Court and not the Federal Government. No. The Government cannot just make up definitions with no accountability. I get the feeling somebody is pulling shit out of their ass here.
Yup, we are.
Because one is a threat to another persons physical safety, whereas another is merely an expression of views. That's totalitarianism, not freedom.
No, mere speech doesn't threat another person's physical safety. I could threaten to kill you, but not actually having the intention to do so. As long as I don't carry out my threat, why shouldn't I be allowed to threaten you? You have clearly not grasped the concept of hate speech laws. Hate speech laws should be there to protect religious, national and ethnical minorities from the majority. Wall street bankers are not a seperate race... though it's arguable whether they are a religious minority or not. So, I can call a political party a bunch of idiots without having to fear penalty. And, since hate speech only protects ethnical, national and religous minorities it's hard to bend the law to protect one's own party, so your view on totalitarianism is a bit skewed.
Who cares if people aren't true christians or whatever. As long as people are happy, why the arguement? It's a time when people get their mind off bullshit.
It's that wonderful time of year, where we spend the holidays arguing about the meaning of a holiday instead of enjoying it together.
