Not in Canada luckily.
School is in the wrong they have no right to suspend her over something on her Facebook account. What she said is correct. If you don't like it, then unfriend her.
Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever heard somebody called a "towelhead" affectionately.
Who's my little towel head? Thats right, you are. Yes you are!
...Yep, you are correct. Just doesn't work.
Anyways, schools are government facilities. They can, and are legally bound to (In the states, but this is Canada, not sure there.), not celebrate religious holidays.
Sucks to be you, Christians. Guess you shouldn't have taken Christmas as a holiday from the Pagans.
Jesus has nothing to do with it. It is all about the sun. Each year the earth tilts away from the sun during winter, causing the sun to reach a lower and lower point in the sky at noon each day.
Eventually it hits a point and hangs there for several days. Getting neither higher, nor lower, each day. The 25th of December is (on average) the day the sun first makes a small jump higher in the sky at noon and the days begin to get longer.
In the Northern Hemisphere there have been numerous civilizations that celebrated this day as a celebration of life and the end of winter. These groups were intimately familiar with how much they relied on the sun to grow their crops and to survive another year. It was a festival of life.
But Christianity couldn't have people celebrating something like the sun. So it was crushed and replaced with Christmas, despite the date having absolutely nothing to do with Jesus whatsoever.
Now fast forward to present and the Christians are complaining because government facilities can't celebrate Christmas on account of it being a religious holiday.
Which brings me to my point: Haha, eat karma, Christians.
Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever heard somebody called a "towelhead" affectionately.
I've called my cat 'towel head' because she likes to spread out over towels, and rub her head all over them.
I never thought I'd see the day where an article about the town I live in was posted on Facepunch.

And I don't know what is wrong with anything she's done considering she is being supportive of her country and their (our) traditions. I agree with her. If you don't like our national anthem then keep quiet or go home, because that's OUR tradition. We shouldn't have to change our ways because it offends you, you knew damn well what you were getting into when you came here.
And as for the Merry Christmas thing, that pisses me off more than anything! How can anyone be offended by a holiday that encourages random acts of kindness, and good well to others? If you celebrate another holiday then that's fine, I don't mind if you say your seasonal greetings to me, so why do you mind if I say Merry Christmas to you?
How can anyone be offended by a fat man dressed in a red suit giving everyone (who's nice) presents!?

Uh nope
christmas is about gifting stuff and eating unhealthy amounts of food (the last being a tradition that americans need two days for, hence thanksgiving)
Natasha Burge, 19, reposted a comment Nov. 3 saying those who feel offended by Christmas celebrations and the singing of the national anthem at school should "please feel free to go back to your own (expletive) country,"
Although I'm against schools taking any action against people for what they say on Facebook, damn she is ignorant.
But if people want to openly say Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or etc, kudos to them, fine by me.
Uh nope

If you are a christian and you give gifts you may as well give a blowjob to a homosexual muslim man while eating meat during lent
19 and still in High school? Is that normal in Canada?
You graduate at 17 or 18, but a lot of people choose to go back for the fifth year so they can improve marks and get better scholarships, like if you bring your 80% average to 90%, that's a good $500 - $1000 more.
I fail to understand where this attitude comes from. You can say Merry Christmas or whatever and not get in trouble in school. As far as I know the national anthem is still sung. So what the fuck?
In Windsor they have actually stopped playing it during Remembrance Day assemblies at certain schools, you can be suspended for calling a decorated tree a Christmas tree and not a Festival Tree, saying Merry Christmas to people but excluding a person who is a Muslim can be grounds for suspension due to the fact you discriminated them based on their religion by not including them in wishing merry Christmas, if they overhear you say merry Christmas to someone they can state they feel discriminated or threatened.
There is a difference between being discriminated, being stupid and being a flat out retard. Sorry but if by overhearing me say merry Christmas offends you, get out of the predominately Christian country.
In a way i agree with her; but she's being an ignorant little bitch about it, just like the people who are offended by christmas.
Here in philadelphia we have a small tradition of a small market being set up around the downtown area called "The Christmas Village". Last year someone wrote the city taking offense to it, so they removed "Christmas" and instead it was just a small market, built to look like small cabins that sold christmas ornaments and baked goods, called "The Village".
People need to just shut the fuck up and deal with things.
"Festive Assembly" instead of Christmas Assembly
Also, Easter eggs are referred to as "Festive Eggs" or "Festive Spheres", not joking.

Honestly Catholic school kids know a lot more about the world then the public ones. They have religion class, it is not just class about fucking Catholics, it is class about ALL religions that have a substantial following, even Wicca. It is also an environment where people can speak more freely about beliefs. If Muslims wanted to, they could set up private schools, then eventually create their own system. A grade school here teaches Arabic instead of French. Catholic school is not 'religious indoctrination', it is far from it.
The funny thing is, a lot of people actually take offense to even THAT. They often relate it to saying "african americans" other than blacks to avoid sounding racist, insisting that saying "happy holidays" only implies avoidance to saying "merry christmas" because it's religious.
I'll say happy holidays to strangers because I am unaware what holiday(s) they celebrate. When speaking to my friends I will use the appropriate well wishing.
I remember when I used to ditch school at lunchtime to go buy lunch because the canteen was so fucking expensive.
I got shown up by this girl.

Also, the school here has no problem with people saying things like christmas tree, you wouldn't be suspended for hings like that, just the school isn't supposed to call it christmas break or things like that

Free speech aside, a school should not be policing facebook for shit their students say. It's none of their business.
Personally, I believe that schools, let alone people have no right to dictate who can say what about religion. its called racism, this has nothing to do with how she complained about not being able to say christmas, its about the racial slurs she used, although the school shouldn't be doing anything about it, it is illegal under canadian law, freedom of speech here dosn't protect hate speech at all
An idiot, but regardless, what she posts on FB on her own time should be her own goddamn business and the school should have stayed the fuck out of it unless it started to happen on campus.

For every one of your anecdotes I could find another about how it is indoctrination and all religion classes are presented from a Catholic-centered viewpoint. Not to mention the fact that many schools require a letter from a priest saying that yes, the family and child are actually Catholic and regularly attend church as a condition of acceptance. For many people these schools are the only ones in the area and to avoid having to send their children half a city away for school they're forced to convert to Catholicism. These schools are blatantly discriminatory.
Oh, and no, Muslims couldn't set up schools on equal standing. They wouldn't get public funding like Catholic schools do. Either fund them all or pull all funding from Catholic schools.
Then again you think the United States is a "Christian country" so I'm expecting this post to fall on deaf ears. (Blind eyes?)

that's because no self respecting Jew would ever say happy hanukkah. For Christ's sake I'm a Jew with no self respect and even I wouldn't say it
I sort of agree with this decision. If she's blatantly saying shit that just isn't true and upsetting other students, she should at least be given some indication that that's wrong.
In terms of political correctness, people are blind to the fact that you can't please everyone. Just do what you do, live and let live, etc.

Unless there was evidence, or at least very strong suggestions, of her planning to incite violence in some way, she shouldn't have been punished by the school for voicing her thoughts outside of school, no matter how stupid and ill-informed they are.
