Windows 8 is a shame really; Microsoft did improve some of the underlying bits and pieces (like search) but bungled up the user interface so badly it's impressive. I'm not familiar with the new APIs for search but I'm sure they could have re-vamped the old start menu to use the bits of Windows that don't suck so much and it would have been great; but nope they wanted eyeballs on metro.

How?! :O
How?! :O
You turn it off in the game settings. Or your graphics card control panel. It's exactly the same as Windows 7.

What if he is referring to Desktop wise?
What if he is referring to Desktop wise?
Yea, this. I want to play some games in borderless window mode, but at full resolution, which means tripple buffered vsync is always enabled because of DWM.
I actually said I don't care if people like Metro. Whether you like Metro or not is irrelevant to someone who doesn't like it. You liking it wont convince people who don't like it and neither will insulting those people. My first post was in response to BCell calling those who don't like Metro "cranky old [people] who hate change".
The fuck off was referring to arguments that people who don't like Metro are dumb for not liking Metro.
It works the other way around too you know. If someone likes metro you aren't going to convince them to hate metro because you do. Seriously every single post you've made in this thread has been hypocritical to the max

I've seen this link posted multiple times, vsync is not mentioned there at all.
Also do you have Aero on? If you do you already have DWM turned on all the time (as stated in the article) and does that force vsync on you? It doesn't.

Ha! Even the OEMs are jumping ship because Windows 8 has been disastrous for their sales. Maybe, just maybe, Microsoft will learn a fucking lesson about trying to shove a broken, bastardized tablet UI down our throats.

The game renders without vsync, but desktop syncs the final image to your Hz. You need to check desktop fps, not game fps.

I'm not trying to convince people to hate Metro. I don't think you know what a hypocrite is.

Even if this was the case, why does it matter? You're not going to see those extra frames anyway, the reason you'd turn VSYNC off is because aiming etc. is smoother in some games because it's polled every frame. If the game is running at 155 fps but the desktop at 60, you're still gaining the benefits of having vsync off.
And again, if you have Aero turned on you're already experiencing the same thing, probably without even noticing anything (assuming this is even the case).

This is just a common misconception: The window actually renders at more than 60 fps internally - think of DWM as a glass pane that only lets the "light" pass 60 times a second, no matter how fast the underlying windows render - this can easily be proven by dragging a map in games like guild wars 2, i can not get the map to tear in borderless window mode on windows 8, but i can on 7 by stopping the DWM service.
Edit:
I'm late, aww

You can turn aero off/kill dwm during gaming. You can't disable forced vsync in w8

Ahahaha I'm done here this argument is full of stupid.
You can turn aero off/kill dwm during gaming.
Yeah you can. But again, is there any actual benefit? You're not going to actually SEE those extra frames due to your monitor refresh rate, the smoothness comes from the increased polling rate of your mouse movement etc which is still happening because the game IS running at a unlocked framerate.
Also it would be nice if you could actually answer the question instead of just rating, I'm actually curious.
Unless you're disagreeing with the refresh rate part, in which case you're wrong. Your monitor doesn't magically display more frames than the refresh rate allows, vsync or not.
Well I can stream super HD netflix on my PC, suck it, Windows 7
I've seen alot of people claiming that Windows 8 is faster than 7, in what way exactly? can someone show proof of this? I don't just mean for gaming either.

Maybe it's just me but I can feel a difference in csgo mouse movement when in borderless vs fullscreen.

Searching and booting (thanks to hybrid boot) are faster, but that's about it. Games that use Dx 11.1 might run slightly faster because of the CPU optimizations.
Not really worth upgrading for until there are lots of Dx 11.1 games.

Windows 8 wouldn't be nearly as frowned upon if Windows had actually handled its release well rather than just force it down the throat of everyone despite people being rather satisfied with Windows 7.
They essentially reproduced the Vista scenario, minus the insanely shitty OS (8 isn't that bad).
Even though I run and enjoy Windows 8 I have to say the sudden killing off of 7 was stupid. Windows 7 is a great, popular, and stable operating system. Microsoft really shot themselves in the foot for trying to kill off its most popular product. Good move on HP's part.
I don't know how this misconception keeps turning up - Microsoft didn't suddenly "kill off" Windows 7. It stopped selling it precisely in the time frame that has been company policy in the last 20 years or so.
And it's really sad, because it's not even 10% as bad as Vista.
The whole metro "integration" is extremely forced and half baked, which ruins an otherwise pretty good OS in my opinion. I am using W8 for over a year now, and I kind of got used to the whole metro-tablet thing being there, but I still dislike it.
Then again, W8 has a nice task manager and the copy-dialog is super awesome, together with a lot of different other improvements over W7. W8 would've been totally kickass without the whole metro bullshit. They could've made that optional or something.

With no decent replacement available.

Really, the big difference I noticed with 8 compared to 7 was that the time in turning on the computer and getting to a fully loaded "non-boggy" desktop was pretty much cut in half. Using a 7 year old Western Digital platter drive crammed with all my bloat and programs, it literally takes me <10 seconds to go from cold start to the desktop with everything in the background loaded and usable. I don't doubt that Windows 7 can be as fast/faster than that, but for me, it took a lot more time than that to fully boot up. With day to day activities, I don't really notice too much of a difference in speed but I've never had any slowdowns with either OS.
The only thing that keeps me from really loving 8 is Metro obviously. I've had this install for over a year now and it turns out that I just adapted to not using the start menu/Metro at all other than a few shortcuts. It isn't really a problem to use Windows 8 anymore, but I found it hilarious that when I went to work recently and used a Windows 7 machine, I could navigate and find what I wanted significantly faster using the start menu.
It doesn't seem to be just me either. It seems that there are a few coworkers that go and learn and use Metro all the time, but most of my coworkers at work either just avoid Metro completely or use Windows 7 on their laptops instead of the Windows 8 workstation.
With no decent replacement available.
On the matter of something subjective I guess I'll say your avatar sucks as well or something.
I hate Microsoft for marketing Windows 8 in such a missleading manner.
Windows 8 is by far the best OS to date. Install a free program like "Classic Shell" and you get your good old start menu back as well.
The problem is that Microsoft convinced people that the Metro menu was the entirety of the OS. Tons of people though they had removed the normal desktop environment. They marketed in such a way that people think it's designed for tablets and that's it's useless on a stationary PC even though it's not at all different from Windows 7.
Anyone saying that it's designed for a tablet must also apply that argument to every Windows version since Windows 95, because it's still the exact same fucking thing, everything is exactly like it's always been interface wise, but W8 replaced the Start Menu with a Start Screen which one simple program can turn into a Start Menu again.
Absolutely all hate towards Windows 8 is formed by complete ignorance and missunderstandings about the OS that people stick with, just like they did with Vista, mere months after Vista was released almost all problems with compatibility and slowness was fixed, yet people kept going around calling it the worst OS ever, complaining about lots of games and programs not working and so on and so forth, even though it wasn't true at all. This again gave birth to the whole "every second Windows OS sucks" myth which is completely bust and terrible and not true at all which further gives people an easy excuse for hating Windows 8 for absolutely no real reason.
Fuck you Microsoft, why did you insist on missleading your customers to believe your OS is worse than it is?
Did I accidentally fall out of the Windows 8 is good universe, because I must be the only person in the world that actually prefers Windows 8 to 7.
W8? Good? You must use it on a tablet then.
I love Windows 8 and I would have never tried it if it didn't come pre-packaged with my laptop.
Did I accidentally fall out of the Windows 8 is good universe, because I must be the only person in the world that actually prefers Windows 8 to 7.
Well Windows 8 isn't that bad, but it's not a significant improvement over Windows 7 so in the end choosing between W8 and W7 pretty much depends on what interface you prefer. If you dislike Metro there's no real reason to use W8.

Well, I'd say if you have the choice between the two - just get W8 and install a start screen replacement if it bothers you that much. You'll get updates for 3 years longer, along with faster boot times and general responsiveness. And it's, what? $5 for startisback or whatever? I'd say that's worth it.
