Please go ahead with the whole "my parents fought for their rights!" I'm from the UK dude, specifically Scotland so don't go with the whole "We fought for our rights and now we're losing them!" shpeel, because really, when it comes down to it, you fought the Revolutionary War for your rights, after that you were free, congratulations, after that we got flattened by German bombs and you guys ran around the world shouting "MURRICAH!" and done dick all else. And in case you didn't know the UK has the most CCTV cameras in the world if memory serves, and we have the exact same shit as you guys have, we have terrorists trying to attack us, we have people fighting them off, we have a completly incompetent government that no one likes too. The fact is, the cameras are on public ground where people gather, when you leave your home, you have no privacy, it is not your land, if the cameras end up in your homes that's when you get angry until then all these cameras exist for is to reduce the likelihood of crime and terrorism.
Quit arguing against arguments I never made. I'm literally not going to refute them. "Again, more shit being dragged over from another topic I posted in that has NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS TOPIC. I never said I thought this company was taking my rights away, ITS A PRIVATE COMPANY THEY CANNOT LITERALLY TAKE ANY RIGHTS AWAY FROM ME." seeing as you cannot remember a post I made LITERALLY just a few posts up I copied and pasted it. Also there is a lot more to American history than that. I don't claim to know your countries history just to make myself look smarter, you should do the same.

And I argued against this:
Maybe that's why you're so ignorant then, when your government starts treating you like a terrorist and taking away rights your parents and grandparents had and fought tooth and nail for, maybe you'll get it.
And I was typing that post up while you posted the other one and I'm sitting in work so sue me if I miss a post. Incidentally these guys will have got the job because the government will have put a contract for this sort of system, these guys just supplied the best option so they got it, big deal.
Please stop posting here.
But all of his posts are so well thought out and intellectual. He's really a great contributor to this argument in another topic.

For all your complaints you sound like a person who has never truly experienced his rights being taken away. Since you are American, tell me, have you ever been to the parts of Mexico under cartel control? If you have then you should know that just having some cameras at a major intersection isn't bad and is in fact pretty helpful.
You're pretty close to being the dumbest person I've seen posting on facepunch.
You ain't seen nothing yet.
Just forget it with that guy. He's a conspiracy theorist.
To be fair we're all conspiracy theorists.
Something tells me this release of information is more bad than good. The risk involved in letting the bad guys know you're watching them is not good at all.
This is my only problem with Wikileaks. While I do agree with their cause, it is better to keep some things secret (only for as long as it needs to be, though).
Sounds like living in the UK
This information really shouldn't have been released, it doesn't invade anybody's rights, and as far as we know might have been helping take some really high profile cases, such as the one that appears to be unfolding in LA. Great job throwing all that work down the shitter, because now the the world knows the technology exists, tactics can be changed to get around it. I sometimes think that people forget that governments have secrets to protect the people, and not everything is out to get them/start wars. Some secrets are better kept a secret, and I'm ashamed they didn't take the time to think about that when releasing it. Also, more fuel for conspiracy theorists :v:
Sounds like living in the UK
Which isn't that bad, it's just the weather man it fucking breaks people down :smith:
I am like very many other people and don't mind some information being made public. But when said information tips off terrorists that people are indeed watching them then what is to stop them from just changing tactics or just switching with someone. When you release information like this it puts people's lives in danger. If those terrorists mentioned earlier in the thread in Los Angeles have not been caught yet then they will most certainly never be caught now. There is nothing to stop them from just being switched out by another person or just leaving. Maybe people were trying to obtain more information to make more connections to other terrorists and make the appropriate arrests and gain more evidence against them. These opportunities are now forever gone and have smashed whatever work people have done to get these people arrested. Now instead they will most likely be completely replaced by other less traceable people and have to start over. Do I care? Why yes I do considering I live in the middile of LA and will continue to do so for the forseeable future. Now I will also be happy knowing if these reports were indeed true then there is now nothing to stop these people from accomplishing their goal.
If they could bypass the system that easily then I doubt it would have been that effective in the first place. Its not like this comes as a huge surprise anyways, I'm sure they knew there was a chance of them being watched. How do you know they will never be caught? How could they easily leave if they were already caught on camera? Some things are just going to happen, doesn't matter how many TSA agents and camera systems you have, there will always be crazy people.
The cameras and intelligence gathering I don't see this as a particularly bad thing, but the fact that it is all a bit secret is slightly concerning.
Sounds like living in the UK
We have thousands of cameras - however half of them are probably broken and the other half are probably not being watched.
US Goverment is probably trying to make some money by making a new reality tv show station: Reality USA with shows such as Real Terrorists of D.C., American Terrorists, and Ice Road Bombers

reminds me of those laws where u can be detained or drone killed without trial for showing "patterns of behavior"
To those who still think this is just for 'terrorist attack' prevention and the likes: More and more alarming stuff is coming out of these leaks each day. To those concerned 'terrorists might now know we are watching them', no shit. That doesn't justify the secrecy, and certainly doesn't justify the lies and misinformation. How are we supposed to know what they're doing is even legal? They could be conspiring to criminal actions and you guys just don't want to know about it, because we can so obviously clearly trust them and you guys feel safer not knowing the truth, whatever it may be. For those actually interested in knowing more about these leaks I'd recommend some reading material: http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/81201 http://privacysos.org/node/785
is there any proven correlation between increased surveillance and decreased crime rates?

We have a mass debate thread if you want all of your conspiracy theories ripped to shreds. None of your sources are legitimate, and all of them are piss-poor blogs with no cited sources at all. If you want more information regarding the actual leaks and how this system doesn't invade privacy at all considering there's no "right to privacy in public" go to the mass debate instead of just bumping this thread with blogs.
is there any proven correlation between increased surveillance and decreased crime rates?
I doubt there's a real correlation. But I'd expect to see a drop in certain crimes due to surveillance. Plus having the cameras can help solve a case a lot faster. Instead of having to fuck about looking for witnesses to a mugging or pick-pocketing or whatever, the police can pull up a feed of said incident if it was in a public place. In the UK we have at least two cameras a street, covering each others blind spots, anything these cameras see is used in investigations, a lot of the harder to solve ones even get images from these cameras published on police websites, TV shows like Crimewatch, etc. to get the public involved. It does seem to speed them up a good deal. You have no privacy in public places. So complaining about cameras is silly. Though this being a automated system, it might throw a few false positives up, but I'm sure they check and cross-check anything the system tells them just to ensure it's right. [editline]13th August 2012[/editline]
Don't tell me how to post brah.
You use the term "military-industrial complex" in a serious discussion, seriously. I don't think you have any right to continue with this argument. Or even attempt to berate others for pointing out how silly you sound right now.
It's only in high value areas from what it seems. They're not recording you jacking off through your windows.
My dick is a high value target to me :c
I don't believe RT for a second about this, what with their hate for America. To me, it sounds like they're trying to make America seem like some overparanoid Big Brother deal, when it really isn't.
sadly, that is exactly what it is
sadly, that is exactly what it is
Are you saying that RT is exactly trying to make the U.S. seem bad or that the U.S. is exactly setting up a Big Brother deal? If it's the latter, then you're paranoid and crazy, if you're the former, although the OP is sensationalist, the leak is true, although much of the blog information about it (like tracking media information) is false.
Source: Russia Today
yeah this is the same site that said a deadly asteroid was going to slam into earth when nasa later confirmed that it will just be a close flyby. I don't particularly like this source.
although much of the blog information about it (like tracking media information) is false.
I think people were just mistaking the part where it said the footage would be aggregated with other info they have at the central databases with the cameras themselves would gather that other info, which is not the case.
yeah this is the same site that said a deadly asteroid was going to slam into earth when nasa later confirmed that it will just be a close flyby. I don't particularly like this source.
As far as I understand, RT is very reputable and popular, but if you don't trust it there are other sites that have been reporting it, like the alternate ones I posted in the OP
It's very frustrating that these people are going about leaking documents that could potentially put the United States national security at stake. As far as I'm aware, many of them feel they are doing it because the government and all deserve it, but when you hack Stratfor, that's one thing - but when you leak internal emails, that's another. I originally supported what antisec and the anonymous hacking movement stood for, but now it's out of hand.
You know you're actually a terrible poster, everything I've seen you post has been heavily leaning to either conspiracy theory or just outright dislike for higher authority.
Yeah! He should just shut up and let the government do what it wants! Who the hell is he to question the supreme overlords and their henchmen. God damn people like him piss me off, he should just go get one of the many available permanent employment options and settle down somewhere safe and free of crime in this booming economy.
