Say that to the nuke silos they have placed in Turkey and other parts of the world, as well as the nuclear subs, and also the fact that the offending country would probably have missiles flying at them before their nuke was above American soil.
Those nuke's guiding systems won't do much considering they just got EMP'd.
Who says it has to be an enemy nation? What if it's a terrorist attack?

All because we are starting to take electronics and technology for granted.
I'm amused at how fast this thread turned into something about military and terrorism. Regardless, that article is just a bullshit list that some asshole in his office wrote up to get more views to the site.
When I was a kid, I loved things like Laural & Hardy and Charlie Chaplin movies. Who is to say they won't be watched by the newer generation?
Timeless things....
M$ Paint is not substitute for a pack of Crayolas.
no, but photoshop/Corel/Gimp and a tablet sure sure as heck are! And a few years from now, every kid will have his very own Wacom. Or iPad, whatever.
May have gotten my altitudes wrong. To wipe out the whole of North America it would take 300 miles up in the sky. It sounds tough, but if you have the money to obtain/build an EMP weapon, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard obtaining a rocket either. It's not just NASA anymore, there's tons of independent spacecraft manufacturers.
If I ever get married and have kids, I'll introduce them to some real outdated technology. A Type Writer!
I still collect records :3:
me too, but each day it becomes more and more niche, notice how you dont see record stores everywhere anymore?
Ahaha did they seriously just think commercials on tv are going to die.
There goes all TV period then.
I hate these pretentious asshats who think common every day things are gone dead and buried and that the cellphone is the most important invention of the past five hundred years.
do you think tv(cable) isn't gonna die?
Some of this is total bullshit.
Watches will still be around. People don't wear watches to get EXACT time. They wear watches to be fucking classy.
Books. Yeah, I don't see books disappearing any time soon.
Wires? Yeah, good luck with that computer that has no wires and powers itself with a built in fusion reactor.
Catalogs? Fuck that, I love getting my IKEA catalog so I can have some nice furniture to admire while I take a dump.
kindle and ipad, you can read your books digitally now. its expensive as fuck but its getting cheaper and more commonplace.
All of this stuff is kind of scaring me, actually. What would happen if we were attacked by an EMP weapon. (Not science fiction, EMP weapons actually exist) I'm pretty sure they had an episode of future weapons where they had some prototype EMP weapon, and they said that if a fully functioning version was detonated in the middle of the US at 36,000 ft. (average airliner cruising altitude) that it's blast could successfully wipe out any electronics in the whole United States. (Excluding Hawaii and Alaska) If this ever happened it's like we'd be back in the stone age. No watches? Gonna use sundials? No encyclopedias/books? Good luck getting anything done. Look at all the things on that list. Virtually all of them are only dissapearing because they're being replaced by the internet. All of them would be gone if we were ever attacked with an EMP weapon.
there is EMP shielding, i dont doubt that it will eventually be in place on most electronics in case of a terrorist attack

missile defense systems?
besides guys, digital shit is even starting to be outdated. in the next 20-30 years(if not shorter) we will be in the quantum age with quantum computers that can process and calculate thousands of times faster than a digital computer at a much smaller size

What's wrong with typewriters? Hell, I still use mine when the printer runs out of ink.
I digress, there is a problem with typewriters, you can't find spools anymore.

You can't print at a library? Every library I have ever been to it's either free or 75 cent printing. It's as easy as loading your files onto a flash drive and walking or driving to your local library.
wires lol good luck sending power through the air
Well, I'm answering to the last page, but it's perfectly possible to send power wirelessly. The main issues are that companies couldn't really charge for it easily... and it's fairly impractical.

Why would I spend twenty minutes driving to the library, when I could finish typing in less than that. And I don't usually get ink refills until several months later. Anyways, I love the sound of a typewriter.
me too, but each day it becomes more and more niche, notice how you dont see record stores everywhere anymore?

Becomes?
It was a niche since 1990, mate.
But I never experienced the transition head on, I'm just a guy interested in music trying to realise the greatness.

Is it worth the expense of a spool? I have no idea since I've never even used a typewriter in my life let alone bought spools for them.
Also, the sound of a typewriter is cool, it would be cool setting up a machine to type for you as ambient noise.

It is becoming more niche, each day it's harder to find a record and a lot of bands and labels simply aren't making them anymore due to expense.

Counting the ~75 cents, and the price of gas, yes, it is worth it. After all, most typewriter spools are around ten to twenty dollars, depending on the model of typewriter you have. The most expensive ones are for word processors, those can go upwards around fifty to a hundred dollars. If I'm not mistaken, I get a lot more words out of a standard spool length than I do with a Epson Black 97 Cartridge.
My parents have dsl and my friend has dial-up. :smith:
I don't really see how people still have dial-up, Broadband is getting more affordable than ever, (unless location (?)). At the time, it was fun, but then I had to get with the times and get broadband, boy was that a change, and all not to long ago, either. 2006 was a good year.

Actually, that is incorrect.
I would say now it is becoming more popular and more bands are putting out on vinyl. As compared to 10 years ago
Haha yes because 8gb of your shitty jpegged images have the same sentimental value as a framed image on the wall
Well it makes sense. We have phones and ipods and everything else that gives us the time. So watches are a dying breed.
I would use dial-up if it was high speed and cheap. I don't use a landline so it wouldn't bother me none.

I actually work at a music store, we have plenty of records. And a lot of them are the new albums that range from indie artists to big artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. We also have the classics like The Beatles. People come in all the time and buy record players and records. So if anything I'd say records are making a comeback.

Are you commenting on my shitty grammar, the fact I don't use a landline, or the fact I would use dial-up if it was cheap and high speed?
Because it isn't clear.

Yea, I sorta forgot that it's becoming a bigger thing to get vinyl.
I love em' but fuck, they are so expensive and fragile.
records are making a comeback.
Definitely. Records are becoming out of print less quickly. Companies are repressing old albums and everything is awesome.
To all you people saying "Ha ha ha! These [couple of things I like and prefer] wouldn't die out! There will always be a use for them in my eyes!"
I'm sorry, but that's the reason we laugh at old people and their nostalgia. Most (Not all) of these things will either vanish or change because the new generation will have no affinity or use for them. Get over yourselves!
