If they REALLY wanted to cut down on violent gun crime then they would crack down exclusively on the guns that violent crimes are being committed with. These are handguns. The reason why is because you aren't going to carry around an AR15 on your way to rob a liquor store.

Bows aren't all that effective as a weapon compared to their contemporary counter-parts. There's a reason why few people use them for home defense, and why it's not the criminal's weapon of choice.
Javelins - same thing applies.
Knifes - yep, they're actually used a lot in crime. Why aren't we banning them? Because they have a legitimate use that is almost essential.
Guns - yep, they have legitimate uses, but they're much more effective at killing people than any of the above. This argument has been made before, and it's equally shitty each time. If you rate this post "Zing!" you should probably reconsider some stuff.
What a stupid national bird.

If I were interested in sport hunting, and I'm not, I'd find so much more satisfaction building, shaping and tempering a longbow of yew, and using that to hunt.
I've already made a bow once before, and the results weren't horrible.

I wonder what we'd see if we found the statistics for murders committed with bows and javelins though
Had they done a better job of determining the root cause of his anger and properly treat it, this would've never happened, and he probably would've been a productive and better person because of it. Nobody would've been dead and we'd have one better person on the planet that wasn't nuts.
What do you mean by "comprehensive background checks". Buying a firearm already means that you have to submit to a background check.
And what does that background check mean in practice? Does it mean that someone is going to come to your house and check what you do all day and night, what internet sites or forums you surf and how frequently, your social life/status etc, etc.
That kinda personal background information would probably be highly useful in narrowing down potential school killers, but you can't do what without a warrant, and you can't get a warrant without a reason or a probable cause.

Thats like saying a car is a killing machine because of vehicular manslaughter, same with a box baler that can crush people, needles can stab people and give them diseases, the list goes on and on. This is mostly pointed to the knife comment.

No, cars are killing machines because they are the modern descendants of Roman chariots that were used to carry soldiers into battle.
Just think of how much nicer this forum could be if guns were a banned topic. I mean honestly it's a forum for gmod.

Though depending on where you live, guns can also be considered just as essential as knifes. Go tell an Alaskan man in the wilderness that guns are not an essential tool. Though for most people it is a recreational tool. Guns are more efficient ant killing people than the rest, definitely. That is because guns were designed first and foremost to making living things not live anymore. Whether it's a deer or a person. It's a killing tool, and it does it's intended job very well. It's the person that decides to use it to kill another person, at the very end that is what it comes down to. Same with knifes or any other object that can be used as a murder weapon. They all have their legitimate uses, none of which are murder. It's the person that uses it that makes it a murder tool.
So what we really need is an attempt at making people less inclined to commit murder, rather than attempting to remove an object that makes murder easy. Someone looking to harm another human being wont stop because they can't find a gun, they'll just use something else to achieve their means. Violence, and the social/economic causes of violence is the problem.

Exactly.
And that is all I have to add to this conversation.
No, cars are killing machines because they are the modern descendants of Roman chariots that were used to carry soldiers into battle.
Yes, except the guns people are talking about aren't criticized because hundreds of years ago they were used to kill people, they're criticized because they kill people right now.
And before anyone posts some snide remark like "well MY gun is responsibly owned and sitting in a safe", that's not my point, the fact of the matter is that the level of gun availability that there is in this country is what allows criminals to get their hands on guns more easily, and that there are guns that kill more efficiently than others.

Any idiot who buys a gun for that reason is usually the type of guy who winds up shooting their own foot, or someone else accidentally gets hurt by them. They would be an example of an irresponsible gun owner. No different from someone seriously underestimating how dangerous a muscle car is, and wrapping it around a tree in a crash.
