Are you allowed to use one if you supply the hardware yourself?

I am, but I only record on rare occasion (those being questionable calls or traffic stops). I use the department issued iPhone for recording.
We tend not to record things because its not needed or required. I dont need to record myself talking to people about the laws regarding boats.

You can argue this same exact post for civilian surveillance, but everyone would be yelling 1984

yeah but cops have a distinct authority over you, that's why they're cops and not just guys in blue shirts. when the potential for abuse of power stops then we can entrust them with their privacy. and if they're not responsible enough to handle scrutiny in one of the jobs that explicitly requires it on every level, they can go ahead and quit
Have you ever worked at a job with a supervisor looking over your shoulder? I'll assume not from what you're saying. It's a lot harder to do your job properly when you're constantly worried you'll get berated for something small that doesn't matter, or make a mistake you normally wouldn't because you're worried about them bitching you out. Same principle here.
I have. My supervisor always asks what I'm doing and watches my interactions with customers. And when they are not physically watching me, everything I do in our POS system is logged and tagged with my name so its easy to go back and figure out who made mistakes. That's not counting the two security cameras behind me. And I just work at a theater.
Its genuinely not an issue. I understand its my employers right to do so and if I make a mistake so be it.
However these are police officers. The interaction between officers and civilians can alter either party's life and well-being. Having some sort of hard evidence of that interaction should be a no brainer. "Do no wrong" is horribly cliché and can be a slippery slope. But remember your already in front of a police officer, who's word already has more weight than yours. A camera doesn't take sides.
