-very good words-
I like your theory a lot. If Syrup had her own spin-off game, it'd give her an interesting and uncommonly-deep backstory for a spin-off Nintendo character. Hell, it might even justify having Wario return to his long-forgotten main villain role from Mario Land 2 for once, wouldn't that be a sight to see? When it comes to the gameplay of 1 vs. the rest of the Wario Land/World/etc. series, I sadly have yet to play 1-3, so I can't really give an honest opinion of them. However, I rather liked 4 despite its linearity, and I liked the damage-transformation gimmick just because it was so ridiculous at times. Plus, it actually made it so enemies had an effect on you besides "touched it/its projectiles, you lose one/part of one (insert health point type here)". As much as I like the standard Mario mechanics, I think it's good that most Wario games take their own bizarre paths instead, considering that Wario is literally a bizarro Mario. As for being similar to Shantae, that doesn't sound half bad to me. The original Gameboy Color game was great, and the sequel on DS-i didn't see much fanfare on release. It was also meant to be part of a trilogy that the developers, WayForward, haven't even released the second or third games in. Last I saw, they were trying to get the first in the new-ish trilogy on PC via Greenlight, and I don't think they've made it there yet. Sorry, rambling, the actual point is that something Shantae-ish to fill the massive hole the actual series has left open wouldn't be a bad thing at all. [editline]26th July 2013[/editline]
ONE MORE MOTHERFUCKER SPOUTS THIS SHIT, AND I'M GONNA EXPLODE. It was NOT Team Ninja's fault. It was Nintendo's, specifically Yoshio Sakamoto, THE FUCKING CREATOR.
Well, you can't really blame people for assuming that Team Ninja is responsible (as I do despite what you're claiming), considering that: A. - This was the first widely-considered "bad" Metroid game ever made, and also the only one Team Ninja has helped make. B. - The last time Nintendo let a third party touch Metroid was when Retro Studios made the Prime series. People (including myself) naturally figure it was Retro that was mainly responsible for Prime 1-3 being awesome, and thus they think that the new people involved in the shitty game must be the cause of its issues. C. - Team Ninja has been known to do some, well, infamous things regarding female characters. If I remember right, one of the big selling points of one of the Ninja Gaiden PS3/360 games was Sixaxis-controlled breast jiggle. That doesn't look good on their record as is, but add in involvement with a game that had a badly-made, infant-/motherhood-obsessed characterization of Samus? Now you're cooking with C4. Basically, all evidence points to Team Ninja being the source of the many problems with Other M (including that awful name, seriously, the initials HAVE to spell "MOM" on top of all the "baby" shit?). I'm certain someone in Nintendo itself had to greenlight the steaming turd, possibly even Yoshio himself, but it was Team Ninja who crapped it out to begin with. Edit: Apparently MaxofS2D agrees with me. On which reply I'm not sure, but either way, that's great.

Oh, for those who don't know Team Ninja only did the gameplay and graphics and stuff for Other M. The writing? Aaaallllllllll Nintendo.
Oh, for those who don't know Team Ninja only did the gameplay and graphics and stuff for Other M. The writing? Aaaallllllllll Nintendo.
Well, if that's the actual case, someone ring up Retro Studios and offer them shiny things and/or loads of money in exchange for ripping Metroid back out of Nintendo's hands for a bit. Considering that the Prime series was excellent in their hands, I'd say they could make another good game, even if only by virtue of the fact that they kept the "told" story to a bare minimum. Retro seemed to be focused on showing rather than telling their stories, which avoided this apparent writing problem. Granted, the Prime series got chattier with each game (1 had no dialogue, Echoes had U-Mos explain what was up a few times, Corruption had a bit of dialogue directed at a mute Samus by others Half-Life-style), but even Corruption kept it down to "Here's two or three lines of dialogue to establish this person's character or explain stuff that didn't fit in a scan log, now we'll let you piece together the rest yourself."
Nintendo seems extremely hit and miss with second party developers. I mean, on one hand you have Retro Studios and HAL Laboratory, and on the other you have Team Ninja, and those guys who made the Yoshi's Island sequels.

Not even many male protagonists are completely alone by their own free will and determination in such a situation. Think about it really. The first prime game has Samus solely traversing to an alien planet with absolutely no one to assist her or give guidance, with no one forcing her to be there other than by her own accord, in a hostile as all hell environment with dangerous alien life forms and harsh environmental conditions, and she does it all in complete silence and isolation from the outside world as there is no one she ever needs to say a single word to. She's one of the most strong-willed protagonists I've ever known, most male characters aren't even that fearlessly dedicated.

"Samus had no emotions in the Prime games! You're just mad she has a personality now!" they'd say.
playing as a girl is the worst
I can't think of a single game where playing a female is a bad experience.
20 years ago gaming wasn't about burley bald emotionless muscleheads. Gaming has become more optimized for male teen power fantasies
Games have always had male teen power fantasy characters, though. Even on the NES era, you had stuff like Contra, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania which were all based around badass characters doing badass shit. The difference is they had inventive designs and weren't generic as fuck. Well, colour me surprised, I assumed it was because of Team Ninja because of everything that other user wrote below you. All other Metroid games didn't feel like Other M at all in terms of Samus being overly dependant on men and too talkative (Closest thing to that I remember was Metroid Fusion, but it wasn't even close to Other M's level). I still found Other M a very fun game, the bad, clichéd story and Samus being portrayed that badly was the only thing that irked me about it. It'd be a 10/10 game for me if it wasn't for that.
