Well, the benchmark is whether the defendant is either unable to know if the act he committed was right or wrong, or if the defendant knew, but was unable to control his impulse. Whether you intended to commit the crime is a different matter altogther, and in fact changes the crime you would be charged with to manslaughter or similiar.

Our disagreement really only comes down to semantics. You're right by definition of the law (and I should have been clearer) but I'm basically just saying that it isn't likely that he went out that day thinking "I'm going to MURDER a bunch of people today".

Well to be honest I think he did, BUT I think his mental state probably made him do so - he didn't have a concious choice, as it were. One way of judging it is whether he would have done it if a police officer was at his side at the time. I'd imagine he would of making him 'insane' in the eyes of the law.
