Death by elevator is probably one of my greatest fears, especially as they're so common
According to Wikipedia only 20 or 30 people die by elevator each year. How is that "common?"
Okay that's it let's just design new elevators that don't do fucked up shit like this no matter what.
They should design them so that when the doors open they slide into rails that are actually secured to the inside of the elevator shaft so that, so long as the doors remain open, the elevator physically can't go up or down (unless a ridiculous amount of force is applied to it).
I think he means because ELEVATORS are so common, not death by them.
OHHHHHHHH :v:
So my sister has a micropig, one of those tiny things, you know. Sorta looks like this. [img_thumb]http://us.acidcow.com/pics/20091009/micro_pigs_08.jpg[/img_thumb] So she's about to get on an descending elevator, before she realizes that she wants to go up a couple of floors instead. Stupid pig didn't catch the memo. While her back was turned, it ran inside. The door shut, and the idiots inside didn't even try to open the door when she slammed on it. Down it went. She held on to the leash, still attached. Apparently, the pig was being hung, non-fatally, thank god. Eventually the elevator was further down from her than the leash was, and the pig's harness snapped due to the force. Once again, the idiots inside didn't even think to try and catch it. Six feet down, broken legs, $1600 surgery. Twice what she paid to buy it in the first place. Don't ride elevators, kids.
A 41-year-old advertising executive at Y&R was crushed to death
good
this is extremely rare and is most likely caused by piss-poor maintenance of the elevator. this post on the SA thread for this story sums this situation up pretty well:
Another "sorry to crap on your party" but when you know someone who actually works with elevators it's a different story. A modern, well-maintained elevator is foolproof. People can't get wedged between the car and the hoistway because there should be guards and never should there be that large of a space anyway. The elevator can't fall because that's not how they work anymore- Many are pneumatic, while all have e-brake systems that would automatically engage if you started to fall. Unless it's a historic building- sometimes they get exceptions, but they usually have to maintain strict servicing to get it. The problem is really with the fools running the things. Owners in most states are inspected regularly, but "the state has no right!" morons will battle inspection fees until the state is forced to take legal action- and that process could take a year or more. Building owners across the nation are fighting to allow these sorts of things to happen, all because they can't afford to pay the maintenance on the elevator. Which, you know, maybe they should just turn the drat thing off, but then the'll whine at you about how they're required to maintain handicap access to the top floors by the same regulations and they don't want to get shut down. The servicing contractors are like any other business, they want to do the job with the cheapest parts while charging the most possible. Getting a little aluminum guard installed so people can't fall through the space might cost tens of thousands of dollars. So unless your state's inspection laws are backwards as hell, you should be blaming the owners and the servicing contractors. Yes, the workers on the phones do frequently tell people these horrific stories, and building owners continue to argue that they shouldn't be forced to keep their elevator up to code because of cost.
God damn it elevators, now I'm scared. I kind of cringed reading the news, basically Final Destination.
imagine being in the elevator like those two people were :o
get a brain you schmuck
This reminded me of Final Destination 2.
Those movies always make me want to barf
So only her foot would have been crushed than, and she died from blood loss? Because I just don't get how you could end up in the space between the elevator and the floor while your foot is stuck.
Exactly what i am trying to figure out... HOOOWWWWW
Reminds me of that scene from an Episode of Supernatural where the guy was trying to climb out of a elevator half way up the floor, so he was crawling, but then it moved. God what a horrible way to go Condolences to her family...
Jesus Christ Even more horrible than that one death by an escalator.
I'd imagine it to be about the same to be honest. Either way you are having your life taken from you in the most painful and unexpected way possible by devices everyone takes for granted every day. I live in the 4th floor of an apartment building. Most of the time I use the elevator and every now and then I feel nervous using it because of sounds it makes or strange vibrations. But it's inspected yearly and seems to keep passing, so I'm lead to believe it's perfectly safe for use.
the fact of the matter is that there should not have been a gap large enough for her to be crushed. elevators are not dangerous when corners aren't cut
JESUS CHRIST
Im more afraid of the elevator getting stuck between floors for some reason. Or it falling to the bottom of the elevator shaft. I generally have irrational fears with elevators.
This reminded me of Final Destination 2.
Fuck you, I was about to post this.
Those movies always make me want to barf
Yeah, I never got the appeal of movies that or just about people dying in violent ways. Maybe I'm just not into gore porn.
I don't think they're actually all that common.
You're more likely for virtually anything else ever to kill you. There's only a few non-repairmen deaths a year. Out of 300 million Americans.
the fact of the matter is that there should not have been a gap large enough for her to be crushed. elevators are not dangerous when corners aren't cut
I don't understand what you mean. When machinery pulls a flesh and blood body through a gap it MAKES it fit and crushes it. There is no magical small gap that will somehow prevent an accident like this. About the only thing you can do is make sure when you enter or exit an elevator, you do so quickly. At the very least you should enter fast enough that your whole body gets on before the door can close. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea that only her leg was on the elevator before the door closed. That is one long and slow step she took.

I can understand why everyone is shocked and scared about this, but it's silly to just suddenly stop using elevators. People die from car crashes. Are you going to start walking everyday now? Planes unfortunately crash too. Gonna go by boat now? Too bad as they sink. Unfortunate accidents happen all the time, but they're not going to stop me from carrying out my daily activities.
Always be careful with elevators. My dad's a fireman, and whenever they have to open an elevator shaft during a fire, they always have to check if the car is actually on that floor. More than once a fireman has just stepped through and fell to his death.
You should always do that regardless if there is a fire. Stepping into the unknown may not always be the inside of an elevator.
I was in an elevator a few years back when a woman and her dog hurried to catch te elevator, and the dog got in but not the woman so we already inside pressed the open doors button bu nothing happened, but the leash on the dog was stuck between the woman and the elevator and the dog was crushed as the elevator went down. I still have nightmares about it. My cousin knew the woman and she killed herself later (she was old and I think the dog was all she had left, and i think my cousin said she didn't have any family or relaties. The worst day of my life.

Our elevators all have an emergency stop button, but also are physically unable to move unless the door is fewer than 10cm open.
Ok one floor buildings it is then.
I prefer stairs Generally more safer, and if you fall the only one you can blame is yourself
Can i say how stupid that sounds to me? Some people have balance issues.
Congrats on copying an SA thread almost word for word
You step in leg first, the doors slam shut on your leg as the elevator starts to rise fast. As it rises it leaves you in a dangling position under the elevator. Then the part of the elevator that has your leg in it reaches the ceiling. The elevator is malfunctioning, which means it is not in a proper climb, so it does not have the power to cleanly sever your leg. Instead what happens is it pulls your leg slowly as the elevator comes to a stop between floors. Your leg is smeared between the wall and elevator, with only flaps of skin, stretched tendons, and stretched ligaments connecting your leg in the elevator to your body hanging underneath. Here's an artist's conception of the scene:
The way I read it her other leg got stuck while she was already in. They should've tried to explain it better.
