If that is true, I stand corrected on that topic. But still that is the opinion of most people of Facepunch, since it is a forum firstly based on a mod of a Valve game. The bias is not surprising at all, it's always like this in Valve related threads.
You're surprised about that? This is a forum connected to a mod for Half-Life. Not saying that everyone is here because of gmod, but still.
Blizzards just being tight asses, I highly doubt that Valve give a flying shit about Dear Esther being remade.
Hope blizzard wins.
There's a lot of people here who barely if not never played Garry's Mod and a bunch who downright hate steam and sometimes valve (for having made steam). Plus, Valve is generally recognized as a "superior" company because it's much closer to the players than Blizzard. The latter has proven several times lately that they just don't give a fuck about their fanbase, and that they pretty much do what please them and their wallet, while steam still tried to stay in communication with the customer and satisfy him with more than just good games. It's like two excellent restaurants with excellent food, only there's one where you are treated like shit/just another customer and the other that's much more convivial and familiar and welcoming.
I like Valve myself, but you can't deny that there is often a bias in this kind of threads. There's barely a case in which people side with Valves "opposition". No matter if they do right or wrong.

A lot of the time its nit picks and stuff like that.
I dont see where blizzard is coming from, I mean honestly, if it were like a half life mod or something and then blizzard started making a sequel to it, I don't think valve would get pissy
Looking at the PDF, it seems like Blizzard is most likely going to win... fuck :saddowns:
Second, Blizzard has licensed third parties to exploit the DOTA Marks on Blizzard's behalf. By way of example, Blizzard has licensed various third parties and third party websites, including but not limited to the websites www.dota-allstars.com , www.playdota.com, and www.getdota.com, to distribute and promote the DotA Mods, and to use the DOTA Marks in connection with such distribution and promotion, subject to and consistent with the terms of the Warcraft III EULA. To the extent that the owners of any of these websites have used the DOTA Marks in commerce, they have done so pursuant to license with the Blizzard and for the benefit of Blizzard.

Third, Blizzard has licensed the DotA Mods and the DOTA Marks on an ongoing basis for a variety of third party uses. These uses include, but are not limited to, DotA tournaments and competitions, entertainment products (such as the popular musical recording "DotA" by recording artist "Basshunter"), and fan artwork.

Looking at the PDF, it seems like Blizzard is most likely going to win... fuck :saddowns:
They've got domain names, not trademarks to the actual name. And wasn't it DOTA 2?
I understand where Blizzard is coming from, it's kind of a dick move on Valve's part to go and trademark the name of a mod from someone else's game
I agree completely, however
Blizzard says that, because the term DOTA has been used by the company's games and fans for seven years, "the DOTA mark has become firmly associated in the mind of consumers with Blizzard".
who in their right mind would want their company to be associated with the plague upon modern civilization that is dota if anything they should be paying Valve for brand de-recognition
While I don't deny that it is a really stupid move, you can't forget that Valve did trademark a name of another companies mod. It really wouldn't take much effort to change the name, instead of taking the exactly same one.
They didn't take the name of another companies mod, Blizzard do not own DotA, and apparantly Valve did not copyright DotA (Abbreviation) or Defence of the Ancients. They went for the word Dota. Blizzard just doesn't want someone else to make money on something that they should of gone for first.
This is stupid. DOTA was a mod for a blizzard game yes but DOTA is not associated with Blizzard it's associated with the mod. Idiots
Wasn't this already done before and Valve won? Tough shit Blizzard, you had a lot of time to do what Valve did. Not Valve's fault Blizzard can't see potential.
Rename DOTA to "Blizzard are assholes, the game"
valve hires garry and makes garrys mod 2 valve sues self chewbacca defense
I'm sure they tried this before, that or the article is really late.
Good luck, they'll need it.
In all respect for Blizzard fans, but I really hope Blizzard loses all their money and gets run into the ground. Whenever I talk to WoW players they just go on about how amazing it is. Everyone who loves it is probably just having a big jerk-circle over this.
How is it a dick move? Someone made a MOD for WarCraft III, called it DOTA. Now VALVe made a sequel to that mod, even though it basically ran the WarCraft engine, without anything given to blizzard.

Valve doesn't own mods done on the Source engine either.
Isn't the main point that there's a difference. While Blizzard does hold a trademark to Defense of the Ancients they do not own a trademark to DOTA. Which is more or less why valve has never called the game defense of the ancients 2 but merely keeps calling it DOTA. Overall the bigger issue I here is, that blizzard is essentially claiming that the fact it was made in the warcraft 3 mod tools it was built under a license from blizzard and as such the license is owned by blizzard. It more or less forbids the original developers to go standalone and use a mod they created as a basic jumpstart for their own developing.
They just mad Valve makes superior products than Blizzard ever will. inb4
-snip bad automerge-
Never played any Valve games, but based on the discussion I agree that Blizzard should lose. They piss me off anyway always taking so long to get shit done.
DOTA 2 is looking great, played a bit of it myself an hour ago. But still, Valve is making an attempt to just grab the DOTA-community.. And that would mean money. And to make things complicated, DOTA goes side by side with Blizzards WC3.
Reading first 3 pages, holy shit people aren't informed at all and try to act smart.
Valve: Makin' money off of mods since 1999.
Just because the mod was in their engine doesn't mean they own it. Valve doesn't own mods done on the Source engine either.
They hired the original dev(s) that made it though, right? and he's working on the sequel. Wouldn't that give them the right to make the mod?
Great. Now I want to see how Gabe and Kotick settle this like men, fighting each other while covered in chocolate.
