Oh no, how tragic, people are enjoying a game a lot.
Some people really just want to watch the world burn, eh?
I take valves side
Blizzard made the game that allowed DOTA to exist in the first place
Valve is attempting to profit off what a completely unrelated modding community did
Wasn't Team Fortress a Quake mod?
Essentially, Blizzard is trying to claim IP just because it used their game. I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that.
"I have more of a claim to a trademark I never made than you" should not hold up in court. If they never trademarked the name, then it isn't theirs. It's Icefrog's name and game, and if he wants to go to Valve to make it then he should definitely be allowed to do so.
Valve: Makin' money off of mods since 1999.
Isn't that a good thing? Even Portal was based off an Indie game, Narbacular Drop, and Valve hired the people who made it. Same goes with TF, CS, Alien Swarm, and Day of Defeat. Valve basically threw money at these people who had tons of potential, and it paid off in the end.
Valve: Makin' money off of mods since 1999.
All games using the same engine are essentially mods then by this logic.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is a mod of Unreal Tournament 3, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a mod of Mario 64 :downs:
Blizzard doesn't want to copyright DotA, they want nobody to have copyright over DotA. As I understand it.
tad bit of an issue at this point considering its a commercial product...
I understand where Blizzard is coming from, it's kind of a dick move on Valve's part to go and trademark the name of a mod from someone else's game
The only issue is that Blizzard didn't give a fuck about it until now
Why not earlier?
Also Valve kind of did the same thing with the original Team Fortress
http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Team_Fortress
"Team Fortress (TF) is a team- and class-based multiplayer online first-person shooter video game mod based on id Software's Quake Engine, and later QuakeWorld Engine...
Valve took an interest in the Team Fortress Software organization and hired the three creators to work on a mod, and later standalone, version called Team Fortress Classic (TFC), released in 1999."
The only issue is that Blizzard didn't give a fuck about it until now
Why not earlier?
this, this so hard. Theyre pissed now because now a mod for their old game has money potential.
Silly Blizzard.
Valve should have known this would happen through.
The third point's response by Valve is hilarious, at least to me.
Yes, Blizzard you distributed those games that happen to popular. We are denying that you are well respected, popular and are well known throughout the US and the world as a source of high-quality, challenging and immersive video games though.
Even though it does seem to be a staple response, I think that even the husks that are lawyers would have smirked or even laughed as they wrote this. :zoid:
Fuck you Blizzard D: Valve are awesome, they will win
People use word 'wow' to show how amazed they are.
Go and sue them Blizzard.
Funny, the official Warcraft 3 expansion includes a bunch of levels that are literally named Tower Defense. Thing is, the modders did this way before the expansion arrived. Even in the Starcraft days.

I dont see you complaining about this and ID suing valve, now do i?

you don't think it's the same for many valve players?
Also those dota maps are just made by community member.
Same as someone would make TF2 map named as 'Grand Theft Auto VI' and then Valve would go and sue Rockstar for making 'Grand Theft Auto VI'.
that's also a valid argument and what the court will need to decide
Not really. If I as an employee of a company, lets say Microsoft, create some cool new software for Microsoft. I can't just leave the company, go to Apple and give the software to Apple. Microsoft still owns it even if I made it. You sign an agreement for that before they will hire you. Of course the Dota team didn't work for Blizzard, but a similar agreement may have applied.
Secondly, I don't know why Valve couldn't come up with a better name than Dota 2. League of Legends didn't call themselves Dota 2, and neither did Heroes of Newerth.
You know
You know what would have been kinda cool
if
like
blizzard and valve worked on DOTA 2 co-operativley
from the start
that would have been kinda cool
and less legally messy
Never played any Valve games, but based on the discussion I agree that Blizzard should lose.
They piss me off anyway always taking so long to get shit done.
Say whatever the fuck you like, at least Blizzard doesn't have a timezone named after them.
I understand where Blizzard is coming from, it's kind of a dick move on Valve's part to go and trademark the name of a mod from someone else's game
It certainly isn't a dick move. The devs of the mod aren't Blizzard and Blizzard as much to do with Blizzard as Valve has with GMod. Valve just hired the team so of course they can trademark it.
After all, a mod is only just a mod, that you can download any time you want without having to pay, so Blizzard is being a whiny little kid once more. The customers don't care who the fuck the game is licensed to as long as it's a great game.
The guy who made dota in the first place talked to Gabe about it... icefrog his all rights to do what he wants with his mood and thats to work with valve then so be it.

No, cause Blizzard-activision would say they worked harder and demand more of the profit.

the mod creators had the intelectual property. not blizz. A mod made for a game is not owned by the game.

By his logic, valve should be sued by ID for TF2 and TF classic because it was originally a quake mod.
Isn't the Source engine just heavily modified version of the quake engine?
What if it's actually a plot between valve and blizzard for clever undercover marketing ?
so crazy it might just be true
Isn't the Source engine just heavily modified version of the quake engine?
That was goldsource but as far as i know, a lot of engines have quake engine code in them, source being one of them i think.
I asked back when they trademarked it why Blizzard didn't sue, here's the answer...
