Is it really that unfathomable? It's a war environment, people do strange things.
college aged dudes over there urinate on dead people, burn dead people and brutalize live people (not to mention all the killing which is the point)
i dunno if i'd be suprised.
I think it'd be a lot easier to get away with pissing on a dead body, something which can be done relatively in private, than strapping a dead body to your vehicle, where everybody and their mother would see it.

When my dad was in the south african army during apartheid he told me people would do stuff like that.
They would also tie live people to the front of the jeeps and drive through forests so the branches would fuck them up.
So I can imagine there being some truth to it
hey whoa don't be talking shit about the coast guards, they're great
I'm not talking shit, chill out. They're simply the least violent branch of the military.

They could very easily have done it somewhere in the desert or empty scrub land where the only people around are the horrible members of the patrol who are sick enough to do such things.
Ever think he was assigned to infantry instead of he chose it?
That's not how the Army works. You choose your job before you even oath in.

TBH guys who act like that are normally either chavs or loners who keep separate from other soldiers and form their own cliques. If they are in a squad outside their clique this stuff is mostly frowned upon.
If you can't handle combat, maybe don't go infantry? Or hell, join the coast guard.
i dont think he minded that much about combat when it was fighting against stereotypical al-queda who wants to destroy the glorious USA
i think it was more of seeing the horrors his own military was committing towards innocent that made him desert
and im pretty sure since coast guard is like law enforcement, they see combat from numerous drug ship interception from cartels and etc

Cost Guard sees minor combat in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, mostly against drug cartels and Somali/Jamaican pirates.

isolated and cherry-picked incidents
95% of voluntary soldiers (american or regardless) aren't like that.

No, I'm pretty sure you tell them what you hope to get into while they ultimate make the final decision with consideration toward your request.

Or you know, you could get the recruitment officer to put in writing that you and him agreed on jump school/artillery/whatever.

were talking about another isolated and cherry picked incident, this one in this article right here.

What do YOU think he signed up for? "Gonna kill me some people! Get me some glory!" ?
It's sad that the vast majority of people I know going into the army are doing it due the lack of job availability or because they can't afford their education.
Trading PTSD for college tuition seems to be the American way for my generation.

Who cares about dehumanizing, disgusting wartime conduct that breaches international warfare agreements, at least not everyone does it!:
The fact that it happens often enough to no longer be surprising or scandalous means its a fairly common issue, by no means "cherry picked"
