I'm curious
For people that need to go somewhere and they have less than a minute to see the latest developments which may or may not be in the source(s) at the time (and even then, it'd be embedded within other text making things hard to see)
A gunman entered a Connecticut elementary school, shooting the principal in a school office. The shooter is dead, authorities say, and a teacher has been wounded. The Hartford Courant reported that children were among the victims; the paper also reported there were multiple deaths.
principal was shot too
Hospital is locked down. [editline]14th December 2012[/editline] Uh-oh, the mayor is saying multiple fatalities too.

I'll be furious if the police find out the gunman chickened out like that Oregon mall shooter.
I'll be furious if the police find out the gunman chickened out like that Oregon mall shooter.
It's more common than not for the gunman to kill themselves, or put themselves in a position to be killed. Real crazy.
Haha hey yeah let's keep glorifying mass shooters so more people do it
i understand this sentiment but do you honestly fucking believe that school shootings shouldn't be covered in the media the only thing they should do is never reveal the identity of the perpetrator.
that's the thing, there is no quantifiable evidence saying that showing more media leads to more shootings. you didn't see more theater shootings after the Holmes media
No there is dude, there was a guy involved in this type of stuff who actually went on CNN or another major news organisation to do an interview and he told them to stop reporting on this sort of shit in as much detail specifically because it goads certain people into trying to one up the other. Current media holds these people up and practically glorifies them, they are turned into anti-heroes and idols for people in similar situations, like kids who gun down their classmates after getting bullied for years can become well known idols for people in the same situation who feel the same way as the gunman did. http://www.bestthinking.com/trendingtopic/relateditem/1427 http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/staggers/2012/07/how-media-shouldnt-cover-mass-murder Watch the video in the second one, it's got snippets of an interview with Dr Park Dietz, who interviewed multiple serial killers and mass murderers including Jeffrey Dahmer and the Unibomber. [editline]14th December 2012[/editline]
i understand this sentiment but do you honestly fucking believe that school shootings shouldn't be covered in the media the only thing they should do is never reveal the identity of the perpetrator.
They should be covered but not to the extent that they are, they give you the nasty gory details that frankly no one but the parents of the victims and those involved need to know.
They should be covered but not to the extent that they are, they give you the nasty gory details that frankly no one but the parents of the victims and those involved need to know.
It's because media is a business. And viewers want to see this kind of voyeuristic shit on the TV.
It's because media is a business. And viewers want to see this kind of voyeuristic shit on the TV.
Yeah I know, but that's the problem, you're feeding people that in absolutely horrible detail and it isn't needed, if you remember the shooting in Germany a year ago I think for a few days to a week after it it was literally the only thing on the news and all it does is feed people like the gunman images of who is essentially a hero to them. For the good of the public and society in general it should be limited to the local area, maybe the country and it should be bare bones, "There was a shooting at blah, there are reports of injuries/fatalities and the situation is ongoing/over."
Chicago Tribune says that the principal and school psychologist are dead. And at least one child.

But then you've got to consider the fact that you don't want to be seen as suppressing particularly negative information. Like how the USSR tried to stop suicides from being reported. To hide the actual health of the society at large. It's a tricky subject to manage I'll give you that.
Can we all agree that these type of shootings are far less prevalent in other countries with more strict gun laws?
Can we all agree that these type of shootings are far less prevalent in other countries with more strict gun laws?
Shootings are but other kinds of attacks aren't. Just because gun laws are strict doesn't mean people will stop stealing guns.
Looking bleak. WABC reporting at least a dozen dead.
and now i wonder if we will get serious about some sort of gun control
Shootings are but other kinds of attacks aren't. Just because gun laws are strict doesn't mean people will stop stealing guns.
Don't take the bait. If I'm willing to leave that kinda shit out of this thread, then so can you. Unless you enjoy circular arguments that never end. I mean I could quite easily point out the first and second part of your argument don't even support each other.
The Danbury Hospital says they're unable to give specifics about the other 3 people that were injured. [editline]14th December 2012[/editline] An official from the hospital states they can't verify reports of deaths yet
Can we all agree that these type of shootings are far less prevalent in other countries with more strict gun laws?
can you not dance on the graves of the dead to push some gun control BS in this thread? If you're so desperate to start a gun control debate, go to Mass Debate.
Holy shit, CBS reporting 27 dead
and now i wonder if we will get serious about some sort of gun control
Of course not, people's weekend hobby is far more important than human life
Obviously take these numbers with a grain of salt. [editline]14th December 2012[/editline] Hartford Courant saying an entire classroom is missing.
Holy shit, CBS reporting 27 dead
Yeah CNN said that a witness said 100ish shots were fired.
Charlie Brooker seems to be the only one who brought up that if you cover events like the shooting at the mall, more will spring up. I mean, shit, ABC had these animated 3D recreations of this powerful figure in a hockey mask firing this large weapon. They had his last words on repeat. Media doesn't seem to understand they're making him an anti-hero.
Holy shit, CBS reporting 27 dead
What the fuck? Swedish media is saying a "dozen". Edit: Actually just as I typed that they updated to 27 covering the entire frontpage.
I'm surprised the anti gun people haven't jumped in the thread yet. pshh, whatever...
and now i wonder if we will get serious about some sort of gun control
Thing is, having some sort of gun control now would be nigh impossible to control. Guns are everywhere in the country. Not saying everybody owns one but there are lots of them. It would take a long time to get things under control.
I'm surprised the anti gun people haven't jumped in the thread yet.
We're here, we're queer
