Smoking smells, it effects people around you, and smokers tend to litter. It's a drug, and only legal because of history and culture, like alchohol, do it in your own home and shut the fuck up.
i'm pretty sure alchohol is legal because banning it didn't do shit.
[editline]07:34AM[/editline]
Too bad that by all legal reasons smokers OWN said parks and beaches.
no they dont. thats why its called PUBLIC property.
People really need to stop being media frenzied whiny bitches.
i'm pretty sure alchohol is legal because banning it didn't do shit.
True, but if alcohol was discovered today it'd be classed as hard drugs.

Do you know what fucking taxes are? Are you fucking retarded?!?! When a smoker pays his fucking taxes the money goes towards maintaining the aforementioned parks and/or beaches. You would have to be a fucking mongoloid dipshit smeared cunt not to see the simple logic that proves that this ban is unconstitutional. This is like buying a house then having your housekeeper say that you legally cannot smoke in your own home.
I can't believe that so many people on Facepunch are so fucking stupid that they can't even look at this logically. All people can think of is the media saying "smoking is bad, mmkay" instead of looking at the ACTUAL FUCKING FACTUAL LEGAL SIDE. Who gives a fuck that your grandpa died from lung cancer. He had the fucking LEGAL right to kill himself.
STOP basing your "opinions" off of emotion and use some fucking logic. People like you should be pushed aside from any serious argument along with religious fanatics. Emotion is not logical and neither is an imaginary ghost that shat out earth.
CONSTITUTIONAL

UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Its as simple as that. You'd have to be a fuckwit with a black dildo up your urethra not to see that.

do you recall when i posted that i didnt support this ban? me too, it was like a few minutes ago. maybe the smoke went to your head, but thats your right.
anyway, i dont even know why those other two paragraphs are there, considering i completely agree with you there, however, you might want to stop being so emotional.
as for your first paragraph, the cigs are taxed, and that tax money goes to parks and where ever else. im not exactly an expert on taxes and how that all works, but im pretty sure that just because your taxes went to buying public property, it doesnt mean that you have more of a right to it. that would be like saying rich people get police priority because they pay more taxes.

indeed, but i dont support banning any drugs because that just doesn't work as evidenced by the drug war.
Abuse tobacco? You do realize the addictive chemical, nicotine, which is native to the tobacco plant, is the 2nd most addictive chemical on the planet. Yes, I said smoking is bad, I know smoking is bad. It's not OMFG YOU'RE DEAD if you do it occasionally though.
Tobacco, alcohol, sugar, caffeine, and anything else you can think about.. all contain physical dependencies on it. They're wide open for abuse as well, and they all cause health conditions.
Yes I know, this is all well known.
There is just too many people here with their narcissistic bullshit, that everyone has to conform to certain ways. They claim smoking is bad (yes it is, I've watched two of my grandparents suffer from lung cancer, and here I am waiting for my moment), but do you realize what else you inhale? Especially in a city like NYC? All that exhaust, the rubber that is thrown into the air. And everything else from the industries, to the buildings heating its occupants.
I was talking about smoking in general, not specifically the issue raised in the article in the op.
You're pointing a finger at one source, but failing to see the entire picture.
This is redundant, I'm not pointing fingers.
Surely it should be the other way round.
Smoking sucks anyway, I hate the smell of cigarettes
Why can't we make weed legal and tobacco illegal?
ITT: Smokers try to defend their habits by saying it's worth all the immense harm it does to your body just for 5 minutes of "relaxing" and "Delicious flavor", and by saying 2nd hand smoke is nothing but a myth, yet not having any scientific basis for any of it.
Sure, smoking weed also harms you due to the smoke you inhale, but it harms you much, much less. Colossal difference. If you inhale it through a bong, it doesn't even harm you at all. So let's keep weed out of the argument.
Why can't we make weed legal and tobacco illegal?
Although that would be a good idea, soccer mums would go all "OMG WEED IS EVIL AND IT KILLS YOU" and make protests and crap to the point where the government gets so sick of them that they illegalize it again.
I don't like smoking but not letting people smoke in wide open parks is just stupid.
Who cares if smoking kills you? Making someone not to smoke because it's harmful says that you or the state own that persons life. I think not, lol.
Now, about the ban of smoking on beaches and parks. Instead of a ban, I would just issue very, very hefty littering fines/punishments.
I don't like the smell of egg salad sandwiches, so I'm going to persecute everybody who eats those until people stop eating them.
:(

But smoking near others and harming others is perfectly fine? Cool.

Yes, that's why they're banning them, the smell. :/
I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, and I disapprove of this.
If they want to smoke, and increasing the tax on smokes didn't work, then for crying out loud let them smoke.
people like you are fucking annoying
Why? Cause we don't wanna die by lung cancer caused by smoking?
Why? I don't go up to people and say "Stop smoking jackass".
An old guy did that to me once...
Then we both laughed and he asked me for a cigarette :v:
Why? Cause we don't wanna die by lung cancer caused by smoking?
You can get cancer from brushing your teeth (certain substances in the tooth paste), maybe you shouldn't brush them anymore.
i'm pretty sure alchohol is legal because banning it didn't do shit.
Alcohol only harms the user, whereas if people smoke near others, the others get harmed also.

That is one of the reasons many people were so supportive of the smoking ban in the UK.
The polluted air to the citizens of NYC is far more harmful then those of cigarette smoke being carried away in the wind. People will be exposed to second hand smoke for a minimal amount of time unless they are right next to a smoker, in which case they can move. It's a fucking park for christ's sake.

Why should the non-smoker move to avoid some idiot not taking other people's health into account?
1) No, people who try to be the morality cops are fucking annoying
*BZZT* PrismatexV8 you are fined 5 credits for violating the verbal morality statute.
ITT: A perfect example of how stubborn humans are when they both think their way is the only right way and why nothing ever gets solved.
Well guys, I put it like this.
People choose whether or not to smoke. You really can't stop that. If they want to kill themselves, fine, not like there's somebody stopping them.
Also, most people don't smoke "cuz its hip n cool, yo." It's a really good stress reliever.
So smoking has it's ups and downs like a lot of things. Cellphones can give you testicular cancer if you keep it in your pocket for a long time, but you can communicate to people.
Smoking can give you lung cancer after a really long time, yet you relieve stress.
just another right being taken by the government
Good. That means less filters being littered about the park grounds and beaches.
Good. That means less filters being littered about the park grounds and beaches.
yes, because all smokers litter
yes, because all smokers litter
I never stated that all Smokers toss their filters on the ground.
Good. That means less filters being littered about the park grounds and beaches.
Oh no, biodegradable objects being placed on the ground
yes, because all smokers litter
He didn't say that.
If you're saying that you don't see cigarette filters littered everywhere you go you must be blind.
Oh no, biodegradable objects being placed on the ground
Would it be acceptable to go cover places in biodegradable trash then? It still looks like shit.
