Oh no, biodegradable objects being placed on the ground
Having a bunch of little cigarette butts being tossed anywhere but the trash or the ash tray makes the park look like shit. And I'm already seeing the ducks in my park trying to eat the things.
Good, now unban it in private institutions and leave it up to the fucking owner.
(If the government wants to ban smoking in public it's fine with me since public places are government owned, but I think it's stupid tat the government can tell a bar owner to not allow smoking in the bar that he owns.)

That's like saying bars should be allowed to kick out blacks because the government has no business telling the bar owner who he can and can't serve.
As I said before, I'm on fence about banning smoking in bars. But restaurant bans make more sense than park bans.
people like you are fucking annoying

Because NYC has so many great beaches...
p.sure this is new york as in the state not the city
and the beaches are actually one of the big attractions, for locals anyway

"After being caught off guard when the city’s health commissioner first proposed the idea, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said on Tuesday that he was leaning toward seeking a ban on smoking at city parks and beaches."

How is
"but I think it's stupid that the government can tell a bar owner to not allow smoking in the bar that he owns"

Allowing smoking in a bar does not violate someone's rights.
Kicking someone out because of their race is.
May as well have said "but I think it's stupid that the government can tell a bar owner not to kill people in his bar that he owns"
yeh ones a choice, son
Allowing smoking in a bar does not violate someone's rights.
Some people obviously disagree and that's why New York is making this asinine decision in the first place.
Like I said, people go into a bar to do unhealthy things anyways so a smoking ban there is dumb. I DO partially agree with you. But I don't have a problem with smoking bans in hotels and family restaurants.

Perfumly isn't arguing that smokers should be kicked out of bars, son
if that's what you were implying

Government owned public property

Why? It should be up to the owner. If they want their restaurant/hotel to smell like shit why not let them?

that wasn't what i was implying
i was agreeing that it should be the bar owner's decision
Government owned public property
True. And I'd be fine with the decision if it was made using a referendum to let the public decide what can go in in a public place.. But it wasn't.
Why? It should be up to the owner. If they want their restaurant/hotel to smell like shit why not let them?
Because hotels and restaurants provide a necessary service.
And don't use the libertarian-style rebuttal of "people will just take their money elsewhere if they don't like it" because that isn't always an option, especially in poor neighbourhoods.
People should have the choice to smoke, banning it in big open spaces like parks and beaches is absurd.

If they're that poor they shouldn't be eating at restaurants in the first place. And as far as hotels go, there's no health risk from bad smell, it's not like someone is going to be smoking a cigarette in your hotel room while you're trying to sleep.

In that hospital thread a few months ago I was proven wrong about third-hand smoke not being dangerous. There haven't been any concrete studies but it seems like it may well be.
And if you don't buy that, hotel rooms all share the same ventilation system so you can be exposed to second-hand smoke.

dude what
Edited post
And yeah, I'm pretty sure I was wrong in that other thread
Well even then, you would have to be an awful bad business man to realize that allowing smoking in your hotel is going to make your business go downhill fast. I guess I'm on the fence for hotels, but I stick by my opinions on restaurants and bars
So why hasn't your name been changed to gay_weed_dad_69 yet
Smoking in public is bad, you should just wait until you are alone or something.
This is good news
I like smoking, but rarely do it in public because i care about people around me.
Please don´t let this go any further though, freedom to do as you want and die how you want is kinda important to us. Prohibiting things is rarely a good thing.
This is actually a good way to reduce air pollution by 1%
Awesome!
Living in new york is like smoking a pack of cigs a day anyways, too many cars etc.
Good thing I don't live in New York. :rolleye:
