• Indie Dev Removing Racially Charged Gag From Game After Complaints

From playing that ending, I'm pretty sure it's a mockery of 1950s racism...
yay censorship in the name of political correctness
voluntarily removing offensive content isn't censorship in the slightest
I love how anything negative with a black person = racism.
Was this why my game updated a while ago? Thought they slipped some secret shit
"Steven has a choice. He could spend years helping improve the quality of life for citizens of impoverished third-world nations..." How are you going to portray a kid of a third world country instead? A well dressed white kid being set on fire? [editline]24th October 2013[/editline] This guy
i'm offended when black people are in my video games too
this ending is funny, its like the suicide vault in fallout NV
Are someone's hurt feelings a good excuse for censoring art?
it's not censorship if the artist chooses to change the art. no artist should feel compelled to change their work based on the sensibilities of others, but they should certainly not be chastised if they feel the need to change their work based on the sensibilities of others. complaining about him him changing this part because people got offended is fucking idiotic because YOU ARE NOT THE ARTIST. the artist should get free reign over his or her work.
It's sad the dev is bending to peoples stupid opinions, just because the kid is black doesn't mean the joke is about the kid being black.

The real question is whether or not this decision was his own, because I don't think so. This looks like a textbook case of soft censorship and self-censorship to me
It's sad the dev is bending to peoples stupid opinions, just because the kid is black doesn't mean the joke is about the kid being black.
obviously they didn't mean it that way, but someone took it that way and the creator, being a decent human being - doesn't want to be seen that way. The change makes little to no difference other than being accommodating to certain individuals. Not sure why accommodation offends you all so much.
On the one hand, it's mature of Galactic Cafe (or, uh, Davey, as it were) to acknowledge that something could be construed as a poor joke and fix it whether it actually needs to be fixed or not (since obviously nobody can make him do it), but on the other hand, people are morons for misinterpreting such an obvious joke to the point where they are offended by what is not there
Yeah.. they can do this or they could, you know, make it a choice for the individual player to determine if it should be changed or not in they're own game.
Yeah.. they can do this or they could, you know, make it a choice for the individual player to determine if it should be changed or not in they're own game.
that would be awesome actually.
Edit: Okay, wait, no. I don't think I fully understand what the complaint was here, since the guy complaining on Twitter is only using vague terminology like "The joke is able to stand, but the execution isn't blurred, and it shows a "poor decision" about to be made." I guess I'll wait until the revised version that he apparently suggested and okayed with cakebread comes out, and then I'll decide if it was a stupid overreaction.
Fairly certain he isn't going to actually remove it, since it's the Stanley parable and the last time somebody got offended, they made the Raphael trailer.
And Yet, Bioshock Infinite Racism doesn't force 2K to change their content. i say, tell those people who thinks it's offensive to deal with it. It's only satire. Besides, giving a child a cigarette to smoke is as bad as setting him on fire
Besides, giving a child a cigarette to smoke is as bad as setting him on fire
I dunno man there's a pretty big difference between smoking a cigarette and burning to death on the "bad scale".
I dunno man there's a pretty big difference between smoking a cigarette and burning to death on the "bad scale".
Yeah, you probably won't live long if you're on fire. Cancer will make you suffer for a long time. (Yes, I'm being facetious. Mostly.)
As The Stanley Parable does not have an option to have Morgan Freeman as narrator, i find this game highly offensive towards black people.
It's just another indie art game, of course it has to kick up some dust to attract attention.
You can switch the races of the guy and the kid and people will still argue it's racist since it makes the black guy look bad.
I bought the game. I wish I could get a refund. [editline]24th October 2013[/editline]
You can switch the races of the guy and the kid and people will still argue it's racist since it makes the black guy look bad.
So it wouldn't be racist if they were both white?
It's just another art game, of course it has to kick up some dust to attract attention.
God job you don't know what you are talking about.
I hope they end up making the ending a "fuck you" to the idiots that don't get the joke like they did with the raphael trailer
It's pretty racist that black people can't have an equal role in being part of a joke that isn't even racial without some people assuming that it's racist. Why can't black people be villains or victims? They're valid roles. When you get on edge about how black people are portrayed in everything you end up with characters like T-Dog in The Walking Dead; token characters who really have no place in the show or story, just being there to meet a quota and then die a heroic death because it would be racist if he was a coward or anything negative. Part of not being racist is not discriminating when you see something like this, you see a black kid being set on fire by a white man and assume racism, but you really should see a child being set on fire by an adult, or a person being set on fire by another person. You can write a one million page essay about how you have to consider the context and history of racism when handling material like this, but all you're doing by acknowledging it is perpetuating racism by means of overcompensating.
So setting a child on fire isn't offensive, but setting a black child on fire is?

It's a cheesey 50's information video that includes the sort of stereotyping that was around that time, it's not meant to be taken seriously in any way shape or form and is just used as an over-exaggerated joke.
I'm going to set it as my wallpaper now
I will join you in this. Jesus christ this is dumb.
