Wouldn't it be pretty silly idea, considering that we have more accessible weapons already.
But, they wouldn't even know who did it if they managed to weaponize asteroids. Plus there would not be long term fallout so it could be considered a conventional weapon.
i get the feeling this is just an excuse to increase spending in space related stuff space race 2.0
So Scientists are using the recent meteorite as an excuse to get money for building their space toys!
Yeah, it's totally better to spend money on defeating asteroids instead of reorganizing the army which is rotten to the core, or making life better for people in some way. Glad to be Russian.
It exploded with the force of 500 kilotons.
Woah! First report I read rated it at 5 kilotons. But yeah, if this asteroid shit gets more money into space tech, then throw more asteroids damnit.

The military budget is rising at a insane rate.
you don't actually know a thing about russia, do you russia has far bigger problems to worry about then the occasional asteroid, and any sort of investment the government hands out is going to inevitably fall into the wrong hands because corruption and crime is such a large part of the average life of a russian citizen it's virtually unavoidable. spending 2 billion fucking dollars on such a hilariously minuscule problem is bad fucking judgement. it's a knee jerk reaction. how about investing those two billion into infrastructure, rooting out corruption, or investing in any city that isn't a tourist hotspot. i'm all for the improvement of the space industry, it is our ultimate, unavoidable future. but there are far more pressing matters to worry about right now.
I'm bias towards the space industry, I can't help but defend anything related to space spending. [editline]19th February 2013[/editline] Yeah, there are problems but space.
they just have to paint the asteroid red every time a new one approaches.

You people know jack shit about Russia and what goes on there.
This is basically what I was trying to say. You people know jack shit about Russia and what goes on there.
Pretty sure everybody is aware of the situation of Russia. But its going to cost a fuck ton more than a one time payment of $2bn to fix the police force and mitigate corruption. Everybody is a party to corruption, its a social issue. Nobody has fucking morales. So don't 'well you just dont know' to get out of the basic fact that spending either way is going to trickle down. The only way corruption is going to be solved is if people work against it or Russia somehow makes it impossible, which it isn't. There is corruption everywhere on Earth, its a social issue. People don't understand, 'duh i shouldn't bribe someone then complain that nobody is tackling corruption'. It doesn't work that way.
Maybe it will boost interest in space exploration someway?
They're seriously going to waste $2bn on a threat that arose twice in over 100 years instead of actually improving their country? I am so ashamed in my motherland sometimes, it hurts.
Agreed. Russia is facing a lot more severe issues than a once-a-century meteor that is mostly nonlethal. How about finally acknowledging that the population has a crippling drug addiction and providing rehab services?
Maybe it will boost interest in space exploration someway?
If we put up a system of super powerful lasers you could use it to vaporise asteroids and to propel solar sails.
If you think corruption is all there is to the maaaany problems of Russia, you should educate yourself.
If you're going to act like it isn't a major problem you should educate yourself instead of ignoring my entire damn post. Did you want me to be your bitch and list off topics by hand? Drug users, Drunks, Corruption, Personal responsibility, Respect for the law You can finish that list. Why do you even care if I don't list every problem to your satisfactory detail? Did you want me to? You know what your post missed? It missed everything which was not included in your post. That pretty much explains your complaint in a nutshell. Christ.
Yeah, Russia has problems, sure. But Near Earth Objects are not a "minuscule problem". They have the potential to wipe out the majority of life on our planet in the blink of an eye. We NEED to spend money to prevent something like that from happening. This is about the survival of our species. Against a threat like this, all other issues can be disregarded.

ANYthing being put into the space industry helps. This might encourage other countries to also do so in the name of science, but that is mighty hopeful.

Either we stay on this planet and continue doing our thing with ethnical and religious wars, or we get out of here before planet earth gets oblitterated, be it one hundred or one thousand years in the future.
They already paid for that though, it cost $33mn in window glass.
That's a goddamn shit-ton of glass. Like, mother of God.
i get the feeling this is just an excuse to increase spending in space related stuff space race 2.0
I have no issue with that, the more wealthy nations and company's that get behind space exploration, the better.
repair damages done by the previous asteroid
Never thought I would see these words used in a serious, legitimate context.
This is basically what I was trying to say. You people know jack shit about Russia and what goes on there.
This post reeks of "Let me tell you about your own country"
$2bn is nothing to potentially save human civilisation.
