PS3 to remain active through 2015, old models won’t drop in price

At the end of the day, it's all a big waiting game. We'll just have to see how the Wii U, whatever Sony is cooking up, and whatever Microsoft is cooking up will perform.
Not surprised, Sony did this with the PS2. Well, Except for the lack of price drop
Yes, however, the fact that they won't be cutting the prices of the older models is concerning. While that could be attributed to greed, I'm fearing that Sony isn't quite at the point where they can release a new console that can match or even beat the Wii U, and I'm assessing what damage that might cause to them and if it'll turn out to be the AMD 7xxx series and the NVIDIA 6xx series scenario all over again, but with consoles.
I would love to be wrong on the "not quite ready" part though.
Sony didn't exactly cut the prices of PS2 consoles either after the PS3 launched. They just straight up stopped producing at a massive scale so they couldn't justify the price drops while the PS3 was selling at a loss, and there were (and still are in Japan I think) PS2 games coming out regularly enough.
Extended support for a console isn't exactly a bad thing, old PS3 units are getting harder to come by as they die now too, you can still pick up a fat model, but their life span is a bit shaky at times.
Talking about future support... with all these multiplayer focused games lately, will companies start shutting down old generation servers to save money or accommodate newer projects, making the games we bought half playable in the future?

If the community is able to host servers for a game, the companies will certainly pull out and will give the task of hosting servers to the community.
Is sony still loosing money on this or did they finally start to make a profit on it?
I think they are still in the red over the entire span of the console but not sure.
I hope the PS3's price drops hard, I might consider getting one just for MGS4 and DUST514.
The idea of giving myself orbital support in an FPS gives me a stiffy.
They've been saying the intended life cycle of the PS3 was 10 years for a while now. Dunno why anyone's surprised.

I was hoping Nintendo would be the last to release their next gen console, because then it would possibly match Sony's and Microsoft's in hardware

There's no reason to believe it won't still. Sony and Microsoft seem to be on a lazy approach, and the wii u is much more powerful than the current gen consoles, it's just no one has pushed it yet due to mostly ports

How is Microsoft on the lazy approach? Because they didn't release a new console when Nintendo did? You need to learn more about marketing.
And no, most likely Microsoft and Sony will outclass the Wii U just as they did before. That's why there's a disadvantage to releasing your console first; this isn't something that's going to change in the near future.
A lot of games won't work for the Wii U. Which is why they aren't getting released on the Wii U, along with various other reasons. Besides obvious console exclusives that would never be ported anyway.

Uhhh... care to provide links that show the Wii U is more powerful? I remember hearing that it's on par with current gen consoles.

They're always losing money on each PS3 sold. I'm really surprised that people forget this fact and demand Sony's blood for not giving the PS3 a decent price drop.
Most people who bought the Wii stopped playing with them about a year later. Perhaps Sony and Microsoft are hoping that happens again and are waiting for that period to release their console.
It only took me 2 weeks :(

I imagine Microsoft will release their next gen console second. The main advantage of Sony coming to the next gen party late is that they can select more advance components, thus making the PS4 the most powerful next gen console.

That was bullshit, and proven so. We know the series in which the WiiU's GPU will be from. Anyone who knows the first thing about hardware could tell you that making a console be about the same as the PS3 and 360 is hard. Their cards are old and even a mid-range GPU from three years ago would be more powerful.
As the video Mingebox posted shows, it's common sense that the WiiU will have better hardware. And as for the games themselves, obviously they won't take full advantage of the greater hardware until they're more optimized like with current consoles. Current consoles have shitty and very old GPUs that can only run modern games as badly as they do now because of their crazy optimization.
Hell, even if the card was bad, by being recent it supports DX10 or DX11, which is still a big leap from the 360 only supporting DX9.
um you guys realize that Sony supported the PS2 after the PS3 was released, right?
The PS2 survived a lot longer than the other two consoles of its time. The Gamecube is still fun and stuff, but new PS2 games were coming out after the Xbox stopped being a thing. I can still find PS2 games in Gamestop/Walmart but I haven't seen an Xbox (or even Gamecube) game on a store shelf in a couple of years now. (Point being the PS2 had the longest shelf life of last generation, I agree)
I just want them to have backwards compatibility with the PS4...
I still have a 40 gig PS3
I still have a 40 gig PS3
Thank you for that.
I just want the PS3 to support PS2 titles again
<3 Emotion Engine
The PS3 would sell like crazy if they would drop the older models to 200$ or something around that. I still want a PS3 for some exclusives but yeah, its not worth the price..
Fucking bullshit price drop. $30 less? $270 for that? Even Microsoft knows better than that.
The manufacturing costs of the PS3 are higher than the actual selling price. They put all the hopes in the games and playstation plus.
If they sell it for less, they make an even bigger loss.

I had honestly heard that they're not making as loss from the PS3 since they came out with the original version of Slim. Are they actually making a loss from it?
Oh good, someone mentioned that this just means they're going to keep up support for the PS3 even as the PS4 comes out.
If I had to guess, one of Sony's biggest problems is probably the cell processor. I don't know much about it, but if I had to guess they probably cost more to make, because they're not really in-demand as far as I can see. I know developers in the past have kept away from PS3 development because of it.
Well I guess that's just going to make PC gaming even more affordable since games aren't going to advance anywhere while the hardware is relentlessly moving ahead.
The side effect is that games are going to continue to not take advantage of anything past dx 9.
This is actually sorta bad for the affordability part because DX9 is sold now that it doesn't have proper scaling and performance optimization for modern hardware
[editline]23rd September 2012[/editline]
Like borderlands 2 suffers from poorer Multi-core support due to being DX9 only, and that game loves CPU's
I picked up a used PS2 the other day :3

And I think that's good to be honest, it means more longevity for customers that couldn't afford a Ps4 (yet).
I think Sony's decision is somewhat questionable, especially with Wii U pre-orders selling out practically everywhere. I think Sony (and Microsoft) will need to act sooner before they lose a good portion of their customers to Nintendo. Time lost is money and customers lost, and will hurt both Sony and Microsoft the longer they wait.
People buy Nintendo devices for Mario and Zelda games. That's it. Neither Sony nor Microsoft are at risk of losing their home console users to another POS handheld.
