Fundamentalists follow Christianity about as well as US senators follow the US constitution.
Senate isn't nearly as bad as you think. They may be loose but not all fuck all as insane as this.
long as hell title
Senate isn't nearly as bad as you think. They may be loose but not all fuck all as insane as this.
Have you been living under a rock lately?
Have you been living under a rock lately?
The comparison isn't as severe as that, the senate is bad, but you do realize if they were THAT bad people would shit themselves rioting?
"You can't shadow box when you don't know who's punching."
You know what I'd be pretty damn worried if you didn't know who was punching when you're shadowboxing [sp]Shadowboxing = boxing on your own[/sp]
I honestly see vast stupidity on both sides. On one hand, the kid just sort of needs to get over it. Deep down it's just a part of the bible talking about morals, it would be the same if they put up an excerpt from the Qur'an, minus the complaining because for some reason the concept of tolerance seems to apply less to Christianity all of a sudden. However, the school's comments certainly aren't helping their case. This has political and legal clusterfuckery written all over it :v:
I like the school that calls one of their students a coward. What the fuck.

He can't just "Get over it" when they're so forceful about religion. He just reported it, nothing more, and he's not the one calling people cowards and trying to shove religion into every ones face.
I'd consider the 10 commandments a historical document worth putting on display in a learning environment
it's a historical document because a bunch of guys in the desert wrote it
"Keep up the good work, you'll have a special place in Hell," one person wrote. Said another: "Sure sounds like non-Christians ought to move out of Giles County before things get ugly over there."
Jesus would have been so proud *tear*
Jesus would have been so proud *tear*
I can see even Jesus using god's name in vain at what you quoted.
lmao if it were an excerpt from the qur'an there would be a huge shit storm
The same way there would be a huge shitstorm if you put this in a middle eastern school. [editline]4th December 2011[/editline] More like a huge sandstorm
The same way there would be a huge shitstorm if you put this in a middle eastern school. [editline]4th December 2011[/editline] More like a huge sandstorm
what does that even have to do with the argument at hand
what does that even have to do with the argument at hand
The fact that places that are dominated by religion hate both atheists and other religions.
Dammit Congress: Quit making laws that respect an establishment of religion, and prohibit the free exercise thereof! Give that boy/girl his/her rights back. Wait...
"Sure sounds like non-Christians ought to move out of Giles County before things get ugly over there."
This makes me wonder if they even read the Ten Commandments.
This makes me wonder if they even read the Ten Commandments.
Obviously they don't follow the 7 sins, that's for sure. They literally are crazy with pride/wrath by doing this.
My school had a shrine to President Obama after his election (It's since been turned into a history shrine, although Obama's "hope" poster is still the centerpiece), and we also currently have one about gay pride. I don't really mind the latter, but the former had me rather upset, since it was promoting a certain political party and ideology over another. Having been in a similar situation as the kid in this article, I suppose I can see where he's coming from, although calling the ACLU instead of politely contacting the principle is where I digress.
the school had been contacted numerous times over the presence of the document and they kept bringing it back time after time litigation was the only way to get their attention, clearly
I'm pretty sure that 'public school' isn't really a business.
They actually are businesses now. Ask any principal. "It's not a public service. It's not a social center. It's a business, we work here for money." That's what my principal told me when I tried defending the fact that I was too tired to stay awake in a class (punishable by suspension, repeat offenses double your punishment) that I had been late to (punishable by extended detention which is an hour and a half long), and challenged him by claiming school is not a business and whether or not I stay awake isn't going to affect their sales. "School isn't a place to sleep and if you're going to be late, you may as well stay home." And he's right about that, considering even skipping warrants no punishment other than some missed work (for a senior, that's no big deal). They need kids either there, or not. No in-between, because that counts as not attending at all, and they like to have their standardized test scores as high as their attendance rates. They have truly become private businesses funded by the government based on standardized test scores and attendance rates. It disgusts me. It's fascist, it's con-artist, it's plain old stupid. And what's worse is you don't even choose. You can't legally not get an education, yet you lose all your rights the moment you step onto their property and don't get them back until you have left school grounds.
I think it's a rather good thing. The general public should know what their constitutional rights are, because it seems many people have NO IDEA what the hell a constitutional right even is.
I'm not on anyone's side here and this might not be completely relevant to the thread but to me teachings like the Ten Commandments (minus the specific stuff about God) are a universal thing, and can speak to everyone. It's all about how you interpret them for yourself. I'm fed up of the passive-agressiveness towards religion these days, and just because something like a set of ideas or values is connected to a religion it's thoughtlessly rejected. I mean, i'm an atheist myself, but I reckon people should have more respect for people's faith and leave them be as long as it's not harming anyone else. Not every religious community is like the Westboro Baptist Church or Al Qaeda [editline]5th December 2011[/editline] On second thoughts, maybe this isn't the case for the Bible belt
Whatever happened to separation between church and state?
I can see even Jesus using god's name in vain at what you quoted.
"Oh for me's sake"
Some of the comments that apparently were made (the hate-mail) is ridiculous, the whole "going to hell" more or less comment, and that these people should move out of the county etc. No wonder the student wants to remain anonymous. Why do that group feel that they should control whether or not this should go through with the suit? People sue each other for much stranger things. Anyways, this whole thing is way off base of what christians are about anyways. No one wants to hear "youre going to hell" (or maybe some people do)
i understand that it's "illegal" but god why is he being such a little bitch about it lmao [editline]4th December 2011[/editline] i bet you'd be singing a different tune if they posted the islamic equivalent of the 10 commandments at the school
Isn't the Islamic equivalent of the 10 commandments the 10 commandments?
I like to read Fox News rant about Muslims, and then read stories about the Bible Belt. The two groups sound very similar.
I like to read Fox News rant about Muslims, and then read stories about the Bible Belt. The two groups sound very similar.
It is pretty ironic how similar some US fundamentalists and some Muslims from Middle Eastern countries are, but hate each other's guts. Seriously. My dad thinks we should just 'glass' the Middle East and be done with it. He hates them. And yet, he's also said that he admires the rules there, such as in Saudi Arabia, where thieves get their hands cut off and such. I'm pretty sure he would agree with their views on women, too. At least some of them.
me's
"my"? :v: But seriously, what I'd do is I'd wait until way after school when nobody's around, take a pair of scissors and cut the religiony bits out. Because the non-religious bits ("thou shalt not kill", etc) are rules everyone regardless of creed should attempt to follow, IMHO.
i bet you'd be singing a different tune if they posted the islamic equivalent of the 10 commandments at the school
The more you know : these are called the five pillars of islam.
