• PC makers plan rebellion against Windows at 2014 CES, analysts say

They should be using GNOME 3 or KDE 4 (or 5 when it happens), they're much better than Android of all things. I'm surprised I haven't seen many attempts at a portable Android shim that lets you run Android applications as regular applications on a PC, I guess the fact that they're tied closely to the Android runtime is a bit prohibitive.
As much as I like Windows 8.1 over 7, I agree with this. They need to rework the Metro settings to include most of the settings that are in the desktop Control Panel as best as possible. 8.1 is a little better about this than 8 was but it still needs work.
Metro and desktop are too different ecosystems. Metro apps look and feel totally different than desktop and vice versa, creating this weird half-assed feeling. Metro feels like a 3rd party app laid on top of desktop.
Because it seems that the market wants less buttons and more touching. Which is the worst thing.
It'll be alright when we're touching holograms instead of screens.
The windows "Metro" settings are awful. I tried to remove a bluetooth device from it and it just crashed - I had to forcefully remove the device in device manager. snip I just realised the old add device window exists if you search for it in control panel, but it's not obvious I do, however, prefer 8.1 over 7 because of the performance boost, but they also broke simple things like the mouse (in certain games) because of their "compatibility" with high DPI displays. [editline]1st January 2014[/editline] I don't like that system settings have been dumbed down and separated out into metro and control panel. All settings should be available in desktop view accessible from the control panel. (and actually be obvious)
I went to the mouse settings in the Metro interface to find that I couldn't customize the speed. I went into the "Desktop" version of the mouse settings and was able to customize it just fine. I went to the Metro interface to add a Bluetooth device. I clicked into my other monitor and it straight up stopped and closed out. I went to the Desktop version and found that it worked out just fine without it needing focus. Metro and Desktop are so disjointed. The start menu isn't the problem, it's the plethora of oddities like a full-screen calculator. I like having windows and I multi-task with more than two programs at a time. I don't like that something as simple as a calculator has to be at least 1/3 of the screen. I don't like Windows 8 by default calls for Metro applications instead of the Desktop versions. They outright ignored the fact that some people out there would prefer the traditional interface (windows vs. full-screen apps) and tried to emphasize their "one size fits all" approach, and as a result Windows 8 has suffered tremendously. I mean, the Metro interface and design is attractive, and if I could detach the calculator app into an actual window it wouldn't be so bad, but I can't do that. It has to take up a side of my screen. Hell, if they were to add a Maximize/Restore button so I could take the windows down to a smaller size on my screen, it would be a lot better. And I know some fans of Windows 8 will say, "We've heard this all the time, you're not stating something new", but that's the problem. It's very obvious that there's a huge resistance against this stuff and Microsoft isn't really fixing the major design flaws. And I have no problem with change, but when the change creates more downsides than upsides, there's a problem.
windows 8 is the best and metro is amazing but almost every app out there is fucking god awful shit
Windows 7 ftw
i would be very happy to see windows being taken off it's throne position, but not by android
Pretty much anyone agrees with that Microsoft has let the Windows desktop team get waaay too cocky. Forcing a UI change on people who is dependant on their computers being designed with a tried & true formula, and without any way to get the familiar interface back without help from aftermarket programs. That's a recipe for disasters, and they deserve the burn for not seeing the painfully obvious fact that most people don't appreciate that.
windows 8 is the best and metro is amazing
Majority of the people using Windows on a daily basis says the exact opposite. Most of those people also rely on it to get actual work done, so the difference between windows 7 and windows 8 creates friction that in the end is a waste of resources, time and also frustrates the people supposed to use the computers for work. Toxic poison for any IT company.
Wow, I was expecting a rebellion against Windows 8 demanding a return to a real operating system and not that bastardized tablet-crossover bullshit UI. This is the opposite, who the fuck wants to shut down and reboot into Android just to open an app?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajW2fDy41fY I actually support an open platform for the future of PC, mind you. I just remembered this.
My Windows 8 experience has been nigh-identical to my Windows 7 one. I really don't comprehend most of the criticism against 8 in general. It's baffling how you can go from 7 to 8 and say "wow, this is too different."
Can you blame them though? I mean Windows 95-W7 had the same basic layout and people got used to that.
Asus has been making these little Android laptops for a while and I couldn't see the fucking point in them I don't get touch screen laptops where the screen doesn't disconnect itself from the Keyboard, who wants to reach over to touch the fucking screen its bullshit Android on PCs is even more bullshit, if you want a great Android experience, purchase a Nexus 7 and a case that has Keyboard support
People dont want to buy our stuff? hmm... instead of inflating the price 7 fold, lets just use an OS that literally no one wants! Oh, and fucking touch screen!!!!!!!
windows 8 is the best and metro is amazing but almost every app out there is fucking god awful shit
Its got a lot of potential, basically. A few core apps are pretty good. There are basically no good metro apps that arent made by Ms though. Also, the word is that there's an update coming within the next year thats gonna merge metro and the desktop, or at least let you run metro apps in the desktop. And bring back the start menu.
