NEW YORK: Gunman opens fire on firemen, several shot

I wonder if the gunman was also a firefighter. If so, I don't think he's just a crazed gunman who wanted to killed as many random people as possible.
I really hope the media stays brief on this sickening act and doesn't get overly focused on the gunman if they ever identify him/her or get too detailed on what led to the shooting. I get the vibe that these kind of news coverage could spark copycats if they put most of their attention to the culprit rather than the victims.
That's the first thing I wondered when I saw this. It seems we've had a rash of public shootings lately, and I can't help but wonder if it's related to the constant over saturation we've had with coverage of the Connecticut and Oregon shootings.
In my local newspaper alone, we've had five straight days of front page articles, along with a least two other articles further in the paper.
I live in the town right next to Webster, been hearing about this all day on the radio. Police are saying they believe he started the fire to "set a trap" or something.
edit: Well, not right next to but it's like 20-30 minutes from here.
I'm trying to get more news but all I'm hearing on TV is "it may have been an assault rifle oh woe is thee"
Most likely the shooter started the fire, this is actually a common tactic which all Emergency Services Personnel need to watch out for. There's always a possibility of a second trigger after an initial crime. For example, a small bomb is set off, all Emergency Services converge, and another bomb is set off, that one much larger.
This time, a fire was set, and a gunman was lying in wait.
But I gotta say this one hits closer to home then the other shootings. It's hard to see things like malls, or schools shot up, but I've found it difficult to personally let it affect me, but when you see the type of people who you work with every day doing things they deserve a lot of credit for, more or less serving human beings their entire life, it hurts.

FDNY has standard issue vests, actually.

And EMS companies sell them
There are a lot of crazies. I've seen situations were people called for help or set up fights just to lure officers in to cells so they can attack. I got friends who share the stories about how when they're trying to help people - they're EMTS, their patients kick and fight. One of them got kicked in the ribs and had a few broken, etc.
People do stupid shit, people even fight firefighters who are trying to help or control a blaze.
It's not a day in EMS without a patient trying to kill you.
Doesn't New York have some of the strictest gun laws in the US?
only NYC, the rest of the state is very lenient
Fucking firemen? they put their lives on the lines in raging blazes almost daily and this is what someone does to them for that? Abso-fucking-lutely despicable

Like Governor Goblin said, it's way more common than you would like to think. Ambulances and firetrucks often arrive with police; sometimes even before the police arrive. They're around druggies, criminals, and crazy people fairly regularly and sometimes get shot at or attacked. It's really sad.
Emergency response personal are potentially risking their lives on every call for a modest pay. I have the utmost respect for them.
Either the guy is crazy or this is some meth lab situation.
Really? What the fuck? How much more can there be?
Breaking News: Murders are down in United States. Media realizes shooting bring in rating, airs more news stories about shootings.
Oh fuck off with your agenda.
Our agenda? let's talk about yours.

That doesn't even make sense in this context because you haven't changed your position on this issue at all and in fact are just giving someone crap for something you've been doing all along
Sounds like there was a
firefight
The shooter chickened out and shot himself. This is probably the third time I've had to say this with recent shootings.

What the fuck is going on America?
There never were this many shootings in a single month. And that's saying a lot, since nowhere are this many shootings.
Maybe the gunman caused the fire and didn't want them to put it out.
Maybe the gunman caused the fire and didn't want them to put it out.
No he set fire to his own house to lure firefighters there, so he could shoot them.
It's all about ratings. Shootings happen all the time and now they're trending.
Shootings do indeed happen often, but in most cases it's related to gang violence or someone hopped up on drugs, or something else of that caliber. Opening fire on innocent people isn't something that happens as often as it has been in the last few weeks.
Oh yes, please tell me more how freely you can buy guns in USA, I bet people will bitch again saying that's my rights! I have rights to buy guns, I can do whatever I want, it's my gun, I need guns (for whatever fucking reason that could be)
I hope Obama takes some serious action on bringing some gun restriction laws, even though it wont stop shootings completely, stopping at least 1 shooting would be good already, especially cases like this where firemen get shot by some idiot.
it's too late, mate.
once gun culture has its place, it never leaves.

americans trust other americans with weapons they can't be trusted with.

HA! Yes there has. There are shitloads of them everyday. It's only recently that the media is trying to promote an anti gun agenda and is just turning these into hi-profile cases by sensationalizing them.

There are probably no more than usual its just this shit sells papers after a high profile shooting.
i am so fucking tired of this
There are probably no more than usual its just this shit sells papers after a high profile shooting.
what papers? :D
in any case you're absolutely right, the media are just trying to further their argument, which goes a little something like: "HERP GUNZ R BAD KTHXPLS BAN K PPL K?"

heheh.
There are probably no more than usual its just this shit sells papers after a high profile shooting.
Well, it's still a lot more than other countries.
Why is it happening so much in the states?
There are probably no more than usual its just this shit sells papers after a high profile shooting.
This is rather rare, people don't just gun down two firefighters on scene.
Well, it's still a lot more than other countries.

Because we're third biggest in the world population wise and we're also the most diverse country on the planet?

It's because when the media hypes up a massacre all of the other nutjobs in the country realize it's their own time to shine and decide to use it as a chance to go out in a blaze of glory
