what papers? :D
in any case you're absolutely right, the media are just trying to further their argument, which goes a little something like: "HERP GUNZ R BAD KTHXPLS BAN K PPL K?"
Wasn't aware 'the media' was that cohesive, thanks for the update.

where did I say it was? The point is that this is probably going to be all over the evening news tonight on all networks and from the looks of it at this point, most networks seem to be leaning anti-gun.

Probably where you referred to it as 'the media' and used the phrase 'their argument'.

No it isn't
You know what's going to be on the news? Two dead fire-fighters. Good job you fucking expert media analyst
Wait so the shooter killed himself? Watching the news right now and they're saying they still don't know who did it
oh no, the guns aren't the problem
[editline]24th December 2012[/editline]
Yeah he killed himself
On christmas?

That, and they're probably going to talk about the shooter and delve into details.
This is rather rare, people don't just gun down two firefighters on scene.
The exact circumstances are rare but gun crime in general isn't getting any worse.
Well, it's still a lot more than other countries.
Why is it happening so much in the states?
You just don't hear about it in other countries because they either don't make as big a deal about it or it doesn't spread to western media.

The problem being that the US is the only largely developed, rich country that has a lot of firearm homicide.
Like South America's gun problem dwarfs nearly everything.
Check this list:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list
and organise it by 'Number of homicides by firearm', you'll notice it's just the USA in a large wide sea of less-economically developed countries.
And obviously Western media has a western bias, so that is why much of American's shootings are reported.
But I also suspect that its mostly due to the senseless nature of American's homicide that is so headline grabbing. Rather than massive drug cartels action or rebel groups turned gun-runners and kidnappers.
This wouldn't be happening if we let any idiot buy a gun. My opinion is that we should just ban the sale of all guns outright, and let the rest of what people already have float around. Easy access to guns, and lack of mental health treatment is going to be a major issue going forward, and it's depressing to see people advocating that we let more people die through easy access to arms.

The ease of access to firearms combined with lack of proper mental health care isnt going to be a major issue going forward, it already is.

What you are saying is:
'Yes, I am a horrible and transparent hypocrite. We've all acknowledged that, but please focus on my argument!'
'What's your argument?'
'FUCK OFF WITH YOUR AGENDA! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TRAGEDY TO FURTHER YOUR OWN PETTY IDEALS!'
'Isn't that literally all you do?'
'Well, like I said before, We've all acknowledged that. Hell, i'm acknowledging with this post that I think i'm a sickening mass of human waste! Isn't that funny? I'm aware of that fact, and I don't care! :D'
This just boggles my mind why anyone would want to do that.
When I was a volunteer FF (which I have been itching to get back into after I had to step down due to time constraints) the LAST thing on my mind was rolling up to a scene and getting shot.

Audio of the incident.

Except he wasn't calling you hypocritical to win a debate, he was just calling you hypocritical.
This guy was already a nutcase. He was in prison for murdering his own grandmother with a hammer. This didn't exactly come out of no where.
Well I'm glad I don't live in America.
As I thought, this is in no way comparable to a theater/school mass murderer, but it's still weird and I sure as hell don't see any motive/reason/excuse for this.
So
how much is a bullet proof vest for civilians you can conceal in clothing / can take a fairly good hit?
[editline]25th December 2012[/editline]
Just in case I go to any cities soon, you know, because people are assholes.

I don't know a better way to put a stupid and overdone argument to rest out of respect for some dead people than to keep piling on the shit. Keep up the good work
Doesn't New York have some of the strictest gun laws in the US?

Spengler was found with multiple guns, which were not legal for him to possess because of a manslaughter conviction from 1981. He spent 17 years in prison for the death his grandmother. He killed her with a hammer.
doesn't matter, all the guns he owned were illegal
This actually isn't that uncommon...
There are several instances a year of people shooting at firefighters and other state employees who are trying to help. There is a neighborhood not too far away from me where the cops had to tell all the firefighters to be cautious since the local residents decided they needed to shoot anyone who shows up in an ambulance, fire truck or police car.
Only in America facepalm.
There are a lot of questions to be brought up on this.
1. If he was convicted of killing his grandmother with a HAMMER why was he released on parole? I am certain signs of mental illness were present especially after the note he left behind stating he was doing what he does best "killing people"... He should have been under much stricter supervision.
2. It is stated he was under some form supervision. Likely from the state's parole authority. Why was his home not checked for weapons? Why did his parole officer fail to be thorough?
It's a failure or incompetence of the system that allowed this kind of man to be free on the streets like this.
If he's in prison, he's not mentally ill as far as the law is concerned. If he was mentally ill he wouldn't have been put on trial for killing his grandmother, they put you on trial when you are ruled sane.
Unless you get life without parole, or the death penalty, you can get paroled after a certain amount of time. If you got 40 years and didn't cause trouble in prison, you might get out after just 20 years. The criminals who don't get parole are the infamous ones. Charles Manson has been in prison so long because of this. This guy killed his grandmother with a hammer, but who outside of that town or state even heard about the crime back then?
Shooting fire fighters on Christmas Eve must reserve one a special place in hell.
heheheheh, firefighter hell.

Pretty much because our system is based on punishment rather than rehabilitation. People actually believe that letting a criminal rot for a few decades will make them a better person through fear.

Where is facepalm, never heard of it.
I saw in an article he got 8 1/3 to 25 years, and was released after serving 2/3 of his sentence. A guess would be that he pled guilty or was convicted of second degree murder. New York gives you up to 25 years for second degree murder.
