he beat his 94 year old grandma to death with a hammer in 1981 and only served 18 years in prison. I think that is the real injustice.
18 years is too long.
I don't understand what you are even trying to get at. a joke? I didn't laugh. if not, da fuck you talking about

It's not even attempting to look at the cause of the problem, simply relying on deterrence. Putting somebody in jail for 18 years is a horribly cruel punishment. Some people find it difficult to get back into normal life after a few years. A few decades is worse.
He's obviously not sane if he beat his grandmother to death with a hammer, putting him in jail for less years isn't going to suddenly make him more sane.
It probably made him less sane however.
Unless I completely missed someone else posting it, the source is saying that there was 2 fatalities and 2 wounded. I think it also says that the shooter's dead as well.

It does fuck all in terms of preventing crime.

I agree rehabilitation should be priority instead of punishment, and this dood needed some sort of mental help, but putting him in there for a lesser amount of time wouldn't have done shit.
Putting him in for longer just served to make things worse. 18 years is far too much for any crime.
Any crime? So what do you do with serial killers or people who clearly don't care for human life and are out for themselves by killing, stealing, robbing, etc?
Any crime? You don't lock them up for decades on end to just rot in a jail cell getting madder and madder.
I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you but some people just should not be allowed to live in the general population
Which is why we have mental healthcare hospitals or rehab clinics.
lol, you have no clue how US jails work. How it should work isn't how it works.
I don't think US jails aren't a place that people should be going to.
lol, you have no clue how US jails work. How it should work isn't how it works.
It's a pretty massive problem when people feel like they are better treated by prison gangs than they are by the prison itself.
Putting him in for longer just served to make things worse. 18 years is far too much for any crime.
If I robbed your house, then set it on fire, followed by tracking down and killing your parents, then coming back and taking all your limbs before driving a metal rebar through your chest, you'd want me to stay in jail for 18 years, I'd bet.
What the fuck is wrong with people. The amount of stories like this is just depressing.
Bear in mind this is one incident out of the whole of America, like 51 states the size of countries.
