So. . .yeah. My roommate beat a four year old to death.

For a moment I thought the guy's name was Carl Michael Coffee Jr. That would be a pretty awesome name.
I have no words, just, wow.
I have words
Yeah I'm sure they wouldn't want to have any background information on the guy from his ex room mate, yeah that would be a complete waste of time.
I think, if anything, only the defense might want to bring in people who knew him back when he was functional and nonviolent.
The prosecution doesn't give a shit about that, they only want info that leads to a conviction. There is nothing a past roommate can say about a future crime that's going to help get a conviction. "Yeah, he would go off at the slight provocation" uh, so fucking what? How does that help? It doesn't.
It MIGHT help the defense though. If they go with a mental health angle, and can show a history of mental problems, then previous acquaintances can expect phone calls asking if they'd testify(friendly to the defense of course).
Yandere-type personality. They can be sweet and loving in the outside, but manipulative and forceful in the inside.

did you learn this from tv tropes
p sure he learned it from his chinese cartoons
did you learn this from tv tropes
oh do i cringe every time someone uses tvtropes as a source of information and keeps spouting the names of the tropes whenever they feel they're relevant
Jesus Christ, threads like these make me want to be more protective of my own young if I were to have any against people like this. You never know what is going to happen.

I too, go to drastic lengths to protect my hypothetical children against hypothetical threats. I'll be damned if I'm going to stand by and imagine the possibility that something may happen that could potentially harm the children I might someday have!
Found out a few things today, but I'm not comfortable discussing this anymore until the police officially release their findings. In my shock and need to talk about it, I failed to think about people who know him, relatives, the child's mother. . .I'm not doing them any favors by airing this shit out.
Edit: Not implying I know anything unknown to the police. . .I don't.
He may have been a psychopath. They're generally seen as very nice and happy people, when really they're actually very manipulative and get very nasty when they lose it.

Or Sociopath, I can't remember the difference
Wow ok. Sociopath is what you're looking for, but you may have been right the first time. If NuclearJesus is reliable it is likely this guy suffered from mental illness.

All I can say is that he never showed any signs of mental illness, at least any that we could see.
Edit: He was the perfect roommate, for the most part. We were bummed when he moved out. Now, we all feel like we dodged a bullet.
Apparently, a couple days ago, four inmates snuck into the private room he was in, and beat the living shit out of him. He may still be in the I.C.U.
Also, the mother, Kayla Hook, is being brought up on charges of neglect and cruelty.
That didn't take long.
From what I've hear (take it as hearsay until official word is released), she thinks Cottee is innocent, still loves him, and wants to marry him in prison. She's also pregnant, and the baby is his.
Again, this is hearsay at this point.
Jesus Christ. How are you taking this? I mean, of course you must be shocked, but like, what kind of thoughts are going through your head about this besides "I lived in the same room with someone 5 months who mercilessly beat a four year old to death and may be almost dead himself right now"?

The initial shock has pretty much tapered off. At first, I was at a loss. Michael just always seemed like a chill guy. We talked all the time, he'd play my guitar, watch Walking Dead every week. He was seemingly the perfect roommate.
The shock gave way to sadness. My daughter isn't much older than the victim, and has similar hair.
Then, anger. He met Kayla Hook in my fucking house. She was there for his 23d birthday party (which the rest of us threw for him because we thought he needed it). She came over almost every day, and they were already saying they loved each other after less than a week. After he moved out, she stopped showing up at work (apparently because he had been beating her. . .I'd be sympathetic, but when a child's in the equation, victim's apathy is no excuse).
The anger has completely taken over. When I heard he was assaulted in jail, I couldn't bring myself to care. I wash my hands of that baby-raping murderer.

I'm sorry. There's no way this can be easy for you. You're a victim of this tragedy as well, and we're all with you.

Some people don't have empathy as an emotion.
Take the test
I could take 26.
Bring it on.
Some people don't have empathy as an emotion.
Sometimes I wonder, maybe they do have it and can just turn it off.
I used to have to give my dad insulin injections, which as you may know are fairly simple. Still, each time I had a hard time doing it because needles. Yet, there are people who have the medical job of drawing blood and doing other intense things with needles and doing it on kids! They somehow turn off that empathy and just get on with it. That's a good thing obviously.
But what happens if you can turn that empathy off any time you want, in situations where lack of empathy expands the type of crime a criminally inclined person might do?
So maybe a guy like this does have empathy and usually cares for children's safety as much as anyone. But then one day he gets upset over something(being broke/mad at gf/etc) and decides to switch off his empathy so he can go off on the world around him. And at that time a kid is the closest person in reach...

Seeing as how she was also brutally raped. . .no.

While well thought out, this is unlikely. If someone will go that far without realizing what they're doing, then they're clearly not capable of feeling empathy anymore. If any sane human being could realize what they'd done afterwords and feel pain from it, they'd probably have killed themselves by now.

Once you switch off your empathy, assuming such a thing is possible, then there is no limit to what a person could do. In other words, I'm not excusing what happened, I'm just saying I think it's possible he did this KNOWING what he was doing, as opposed to doing it because he's so sick in the head that he doesn't know what he did(ie insanity).
played X-Box a lot
Well, now we know why he did it.

like what Onion836 was just implying I think, the point is that the ability to lack empathy in such a large way is in itself mental illness
I'm sorry. There's no way this can be easy for you. You're a victim of this tragedy as well, and we're all with you.
I appreciate it, but I'm no victim. I'm just a guy who knows a guy that did something horrible.
The real victims are the little girl, and her family (minus her mother).

Another article about the murder. Sorry, I'm on a java-based phone and Opera Mini, so I can't paste directly into the OP without erasing everything else. If that doesn't work, Google search "Carl Michael Cottee murder" and you'll find a few links.
