I understand why they did it, military life is largely about being told what to do so when that guy runs, well, it's no wonder his subordinates did the same. Even so there's been plenty of other cases in history where the officers were killed, ran away, or just sucked at life, and the NCOs took charge of the situation and got shit done. Hell, there's been cases where enlisted have just been like "oh yeah, this is a war, well I guess I should kill motherfuckers even though nobody told me to do that."
That's literally the whole reason why we have military ranks. This whole situation is a weapons-grade, platinum-coated, perfect example of the importance of morale and general competence in not only the officer corps but also the NCOs and enlisted. I assure you this would not have happened in a NATO military unit, especially not when everyone knows what kind of swell gentleman ISIS are and how great they'd treat their prisoners. Plus I'm like a thousand percent certain that every other military in the world wouldn't just leave their [i]heavy equipment like artillery, and armored fighting vehicles[/i] to be captured and would, instead, use them for what they're there for.
All of that aside though? Accusing dead people of being part of a "defeatist culture" is not cool. That doesn't make any fucking sense anyway, because this would have never happened with the Saudi Army, or just about every other military in the region. These troops lost their officers to desertion, which was because of shit morale and incompetence, and that's because the whole fucking military is like ten years old.
