Whilst protestants see it as God being upset because Onan didn't do as he was told. As of late they have tried to relate their anti-condom propaganda to the "life is sacred" ideal too though, but it started off waaay before that, there's been documented cases of excommunication back in the middle ages due to the use of "pigskin condoms". Good times?

I don't think the Pope issued this decree based on dumb-fuck teenagers. More concerned with the need to stop death from disease, despite the rulings of the faith which are against one of the main ways. Suppose the ideal solution for the Church would be for everyone to simply abstain from having sex! - but that's not going to happen.
