It sucks but Apple doesn't cater to audiophiles or anyone who wants larger capacity for music since everyone wants (or at least Apple) to stream now. At least they've reached 128gb capacity which is better than nothing if you want to stick with iOS and iTunes. There's the FiiO X1 ($100) and X5 ($350) which could be decent alternatives, but the X5 route being pricier because of the base price plus SD card cost, but you'd be able to buy two 128gb cards for 256gb total storage. I contemplated buying a Classic for the longest time but wanted to wait until my iPod Touch died, then Apple discontinued it and pulled their stock from Apples stores, stores were sold out, and ebay had ridiculous prices, but I went to the Radioshack near me and they had one left that had been sitting in their stock for a while so I got it and I haven't regretted that purchase. Plus it's convenient as fuck in the car. Streaming is nice and all, I used it for a while when I had my Galaxy Nexus with Google Play but without wifi, it eats up your costly data, you don't get the best quality/loads slowly based on your signal strength, you won't have any music if you lose your signal, and you're using up your phone's battery. I like having a separate device so I can listen to music on a different battery, and have save juice in my phone for more important uses.
The ability to pre-cache music is the best compromise I feel, which fortunately Google Play Music allows. I have like 20 GB of music on my M8. But of course you're still limited to lossy standards. And your limited to using the client application for that service. So I can't just switch to a different media player.
I still use my 80Gb Classic. It will survive the nuclear Winter it's so damn sturdy. Just don't play one into an Xbox. That shit will kill it.
I still have the 120GB Zune. Battery life has dropped significantly, but it doesn't really matter as it stays plugged in my car.
i dont think apple have really ever given a shit about audiophiles tbh. their typical market is much more Beats™-oriented
They don't care because the audio output of the iPhone/iPods are "good enough" for the vast majority of people. The earphones they include with them are pretty bad, but when you're on a bus or going for a jog? People can't hear the difference.
you must not have heard of Cowon, one of the few protable audio devices that supported both .flac and .ogg format
...not that you should ever be using flac on a mobile device i stream practically everything with spotify these days. i have virtually no reason to keep music locally unless it's some very small artist that doesn't have spotify support. spotify's extreme quality streaming is 320kbp/s MP3/HQ OGG. if you live somewhere that doesn't have exorbitant data plans, it's perfect. Buying a 128gb SD card for my smartphone isn't the same thing. And streaming, it just cannot replace(only add) what we currently have- and I'm not talking about purchasing physical copies instead, or some attachment to some "purer" form of being a music lover, I just have noticed so many albums missing from artists of varying popularity, and I'm not about to subscribe to multiple services at once. Licensing etc will be an issue for so many forgotten masterpieces as streaming (quite rightly) becomes the norm.
Google Play Music lets you upload your own music and stream it from that

I use Google Play music on my iPhone 6 and it's really great, only nibbles on your battery. The fact is, it's better to save your money and buy better headphones than getting a device that supports flac or other lossless format.
