Due to estate tax loophole, Texas oil tycoon passes $9b to his children tax-free

I'd buy nine billion hookers.
No, because I'd remember my poor days and just be glad that I was getting 4b from my rich oil tycoon father.
I highly doubt his kids had "Poor Days".
I'll bet his kids were spoiled rotten.
Did I say that
you're acting it

So why not collect a higher percentage of tax from them than the average person?
And T2L_Goose, I try to stand by the shit I say. I have no reason to believe that if I was really rich I'd oppose taxes.
Love the communism in this thread.
The man that makes more money should have more taken away based on the fact that it's rich and won't bother him.
Boy that gives you some incentive to do good in life.
"spread the money around"
indeed, silly children lmao.
Yeah, if his kids can't get all of his money, they might have to get off their asses and earn some themselves.
Also, the "silly children" strawman is very worn out.

I take confidence in the fact that the immaturity in this thread knows no bounds.
Don't act the part of the "silly children" fallacy and I will not play it. Continue grasping for the proverbial straw, but any successful, well off, family will know all to well this law is bullshit, ironically enough the very politicians that are passing the tax in question are immune to it.
Anyone else with insight on the matter will agree.

So you're part of a family with more than $7 million of wealth?

He's an oil baron, he hardly earned his fortune "doing good"
bla bla, call communism, whatever -- I don't think any one person (or any one family) should inherit $9 billion, these taxes obviously could serve many more people who need the money much more...they are for the greater good. It's 9 billion! There are millions living in poverty and you're crying about some already-rich heirs only getting half of it?

Oh, I'm sure the wealth appeared out of mid-air and landed in his lap.
Congratulations on reinforcing my post. Only a ne'er-do-well would have that attitude. Who are you to judge how much money someone should have? Hell, why doesn't everyone on earth make the same amount of money? Because it doesn't work that way. They earned the money, them and they're children deserve to keep it.
I hope one of you gentlemen win the lottery. I wish I'd be there to see your jaw hit the floor when the first check arrives.
If I was receiving 9 billion, I wouldn't mind if the government took half of it, but if I only received 90,000 a half would mean a lot more.
You do know that when you are told you are going to receive 9 billion & then you only get 4 billion, opinions change, right?

Yeah, but the kids did absolutely nothing to earn that money. They've lived lives of luxury; wouldn't the money do more good, say, providing health insurance or food stamps for poor people?

Reinforcing my previous point like a pitiful child.
You lose. As for the aforementioned point, no, I do not come from a family which exceeds $7 million, you need to learn to read. The law STARTS at $1.5 million in the US, which is nearly how much money my father has accumulated,

but, oh gee, He doesn't deserve to see his children get all the money, I'm sure he'd rather have Yolanda and Rosita have some nice extra cash for their 8 children. After all, they deserve it *wink wink*

I never said he didn't work for it, I said he didn't "do good" to amass that fortune...nothing "ne-er do-well (???)" about valuing those that actually contribute to society over oil barons and their rich kids

Ok, so basically daddy has your way paid through life and you're only arguing this because you're threatened by the prospect of everyday people below you getting a cut of that..?
The bonanza in tax savings for Mr. Duncan’s descendants is sure to be unsettling to those who have paid estate taxes on more modest wealth — until Jan. 1 of this year, it applied to any estate valued at more than $3.5 million, taxing only the money exceeding that threshold, or $7 million for a couple’s estate.

Yay, racism.
"Yolanda and Rosita". Yes, choose stereotypical African-American and Hispanic names. Yes, refer to "8 children".
I work at a grocery store. I see many people on food stamps every day. Many of them are married. Many of them are elderly people who can't afford food on Social Security and their savings. Nearly all are white. I know many of them from the community, as I see them in their jobs semi-frequently. You're an elitist asswad.
Of course he shouldn't get taxed for them, it's not like the hospitals, schools, people in poverty, scientists, policemen, firemen or even the soldiers could use the money :downs:
And if his children get four billion dollars anyway, it's not like they're going to need the extra five.
Ok, so basically daddy has your way paid through life and you're only arguing this because you're threatened by the prospect of everyday people below you getting a cut of that..?
No, he's threatened by the prospect of welfare queen darkies and spics stealing all his money. No white people ever go on food stamps because fuck you, white people can work and not need to go on food stamps.
Honestly, that hurt to write. The stupidity inherent in that line of thought is mind-boggling

yes they do, they worked hard for it
god chose them to come out of his rich wife's vagina instead of that of a working-class family struggling to get by

Gonna touch on this again.
Pretty sure he doesn't give a damn about his money now that, oh, he's pushing daisies.
the government would just waste the $5 billion dollars anyways
the government would just waste the $5 billion dollars anyways
Actually it's kind of sad, but yeah. Given most of what we've seen, congressmen would see more of that money than the entire poverty bracket of the country.
Why is everyone here such an extremist? The government is neither wholly incompetent or perfectly efficient.
Most people agree that the extremely rich owe the country some of their wealth for facilitating their success. That's why there's an estate tax.
what the fuck are you going to do with 9 billion anyway
Yeah because the government totally has a right to 55% of your money.

Haha are you implying our government does anything good with tax money in the first place?
Literally more than 50% of our taxes goes to military funding that we don't fucking need

So if I want to give someone $10 the government should have the right to take $5.50? Why should it change if someone is rich? Other than "Heh... they don't need it anyway......"

Couldn't agree more, the amount of stupidity in the thread is enormous, mostly by people who have absolutely not experience at life or with dealing with money. 55 per cent is an huge amount, doesn't matter what they are going to do with the money, it's their money, you're just jealous.
I'm a die-hard socialist, and even I can see that putting a 55% tax on 9 billion dollars of inheritance is wrong.
It's his money, I don't see why he should be taxed for giving it away.
That being said, a more modest tax on ludicrous amounts of money like this wouldn't bother me too much. Something like 5% or 10% I wouldn't have too much a problem with because with 9 billion you're barely gonna notice, and it would help closing the gap between rich and poor without completely fucking over the relatives.

This is reasonable, but I'm sure a lot of idiots in this thread are going to think I'm arguing that there should be absolutely no tax.
A Tobin tax would be far better than this estate tax thing....
Imo it would be a lot better for the country if we just increased tax on things like soda/candy/chips/alcohol by a little bit.
