Homeless man finds backpack full of cash, turns it over to police

That's one nice homeless guy.
I would've don the same though. And most of you guys too. Because think about it. For all you know, that shit could be stolen and now tracked or some shit, and you try to buy something meaningful with it? Bam, fucking busted and hey there, jail. And if you turn it in, you might get a reward, which might be scraps, but hell, better than prison.

Is there a law requiring you to return anything you've found?
I mean, this bag had tons of money along with foreign papers and passports, obviously it won't be hard to find the owner, but am I legally obligated to try and find an owner of an unmarked bag with $50k in it with nothing pointing to who the owner could be?
I don't think the police just leave out bags of cash for people to find and spend anyway. That's like, worse than entrapment.
last week I found a wallet with 60$ in it, but there were no papers or identity cards. Literally just money.
am I a bad person if I kept the money?
I feel like this is thinly veiled bragging. Without an ID there is no way to tell who the wallet belonged to.
'fairly comfortably' what about the guilt weighing down on him
I mean that's someone else's backpack
I would've turned it in but kept the cash
38000 in travelers checks like the fuck

Eh, not too sure about that. For a homeless guy, prison means a safe place, a roof above the head and free meals. Doesn't seem that bad.
For all we know he took some cash before returning the rest
Still more generous than most people I bet.

What about air?
I am pretty sure people get less selfish the more poor they are. You can't survive by yourself if you are dirt poor, you need people. The richer you are the more of an entitled prick you become.
I don't have that much money but I sure as shit would've honestly been a bit selfish when it comes to this
there are billions of super selfish pricks who are poor
there are billions of super selfless saints who are literally swimming in cash
True, but there aren't many who gave up the equivelent of >1000% of their income because it was 'the right thing to do'.
not being completely selfless doesn't make you an ass
what the fuck dude what is this elementary school
Hell, being greedy isn't necessarily a bad thing. MANY people with money still donate a good amount. Unless you're doing something like, lets say, you know, the banks do, and actually steal money, you're fine.
Steve Jobs donated nothing. he was still an OK dude. it doesn't make him evil or "pure selfish". Being greedy doesn't make you an asshole, just human. Until of course it very much hurts other people.
So tell me, what have you done to donate selflessly?
dude could have lived fairly comfortably with that for at least a year.
damn.
While I imagine a homeless man might not be too concerned with this next point, I don't think the IRS accepts "I found it in a backpack" as a valid explanation for where your new found wealth originated.
Why do so many people leave behind backpacks and duffel bags full of cash? I feel like that's something you'd remember to grab.
It could have been some illegal shit..
TBH I wouldn't have even touched the shit let alone turned in to the police. Who knows what kind of money that is.
I hope that karma rewards this man

I meant, not like that. Like some criminals found out that their shit is tracked and just disposed of it. And then you find it. And you get fucked because of it somehow.
Seriously, I'm just inventing shit. I believe my bullshit has a point - you just can't know for certain how safe it is to take these money. You know what you get for turning it in - worst case scenario, you get a "thank you". But you don't know what's going to happen if you take it for yourself.
`This reminds me of the time when my dad was a teenager and he was walking on a street and a guy riding a motorcycle dropped a bag with at least $400,000 he later found the guy who the bag belonged to and got $5 as a reward.

Legally you have to turn it in. And morally, you should have. (If only because it becomes yours if nobody claims it and to claim something you have to prove its yours - and nobody records the serial numbers on their cash)

Only 5 freaking dollars? That's just fucked man, should have gotten like 2000 dollars or something, 400,000 dollars is alot of cash.
awwwwwwww

How did he know it was the same guy?

Of course, that doesn't address a general trait for greed in a person, but people who are not otherwise greedy may be inclined to do so once they have wealth. There was a thread here like a month ago about it.
Give that guy a medal.

why have people rated this dumb, there are studies(and pretty much common wisdom/philosophers pointing from milenia) that say that money/power does in fact affect a person psyche.
lets be honest here, pick a history book and you'll see that most people don't handle power(which is basically what money is in a certain way) all that well.
and experiencing poverty to a certain degree can in fact teach someone to better understand what ails the poor(or at least have less of a "fuck the poor" attitude).
also nevermind the fact sociopaths actively seek power/money too.

I never understand this, "what kind of money"
It's money-money. Spendable. Probably unmarked.
I would turn it over to the police, but I would take the cash before. Or at least a bit of it.
This is a really bad thing to do.
When you come across valuables that someone has dropped you have two options.
Take all of it, or attempt to return it to the owner.
Never take some and hand it to the police, because then your ass is toast when they want to know where the rest of it is.
good on em
