Redmond is still being a bit coy about precisely what Game Mode will and won't do, but the picture has become a little clearer. We spoke to Kevin Gammill, partner group program manager for the Xbox platform, about what Game Mode was for and what to expect. The overarching goal is to make Windows 10 "the best operating system for games"—and critically, to make it more consistent, so that frame rates and performance are more predictable and uniform. Gamill said that when Game Mode is active, the operating system will tend to be biased toward allocating CPU and GPU resources to the game. Gammill didn't say this (and probably for good reason; there are segments of the PC gaming community that would regard the following as dirty words), but it sounds to us like the aim is to make PC gaming a little more, well, console-like. Console hardware is much more predictable than PC hardware, with developers knowing exactly how many processor cores and GPU shaders, and how much system memory, they'll have access to at any moment. Game Mode won't be turning the PC into a console any time soon, but it could start to provide a little more predictability. This is a long-term goal; the Creators Update will contain the first iteration of Game Mode, but it shouldn't be the last. What that first iteration actually does is still something of a mystery. Gammill refused to be drawn into specifics, but he said that it was something along the lines of suspending or deferring unnecessary background tasks and using process priorities and processor affinity to limit any performance impact of multitasking. What will this all add up to? For games that are currently CPU- or GPU-bound, Gammill said that Microsoft was seeing framerate improvements of 2 to 5 percent.
not a big increase, but it will probably help low-end PC's and try to eliminate micro stutter problems on games.
wow I've always wanted to be able to set a game's priority to high without opening task manager
wow I've always wanted to be able to set a game's priority to high without opening task manager
This is probably targeted to the regular consumer, like all the other "game boost" applications are. Your average Joe doesn't think about priorities or closing down programs running in the background and adjusting various settings. They probably don't even know how to access that stuff.
I'm not sure I like the overlay idea. I've already got Fraps, Shadowplay , Discord and Steam. If there's an easy way to enable it without enabling the overlay, I'm golden.
I wonder if this does anything else in the background aside from setting process priority to high?

i just hope this will make forza horizon 3 playable
Why do you have Fraps if you have Shadowplay.
imo a good reason is that fraps is lossless while shadowplay still has a bit of compression going on but i dont really see a reason to run them both at the same time
Why do you have Fraps if you have Shadowplay.
Lets say he uses premiere pro. Shadowplay has variable framerate, and adobe premiere pro hates that. It'll desync the audio in really wonky ways that's hard to fix within premiere. Fraps records a solid 60 (or whatever you set it to) no matter what. That, and shadowplay is lower quality than fraps.

I don't necessarily always have both Shadowplay and Fraps running simultaneously, but Fraps also takes better quality screenshots than shadowplay, and has more reliable programming. Shadowplay's kind of fucked because Nvidia can't program a good UI to save their lives. Just saying, with the amount of stuff I tend to have open, I don't need *another* overlay.
This is going to be so useful to me. Even on a 6600k overclocked to 4.2 Ghz, GTA V still has loading issues when I drive too fast. The only fix is "set priority to high", which does work. Then I have to set my PS3 controller drivers to high, or else extreme input lag. Without this update I'd have to do this every time I wanted to start GTA V

I've been using it personally to keep my games and video editing stuff at a set priority automatically and it works pretty nicely.
Snickerdoodle that sounds like more of a RAM/HDD issue
Snickerdoodle that sounds like more of a RAM/HDD issue
Nope. Its a known problem with GTA5. I run 16 gigs of ram and have GTA on a samsung ssd, sometimes takes forever to actually load
Will it temporarily kill extra processes like Cortana?
Nope. Its a known problem with GTA5. I run 16 gigs of ram and have GTA on a samsung ssd, sometimes takes forever to actually load
Really, I had like bare minimum specs and my loading screen only lasted 2 minutes tops.
, but Fraps also takes better quality screenshots than shadowplay
it does? guess i'll have to get fraps then.
it does? guess i'll have to get fraps then.
Screenshots I took with shadowplay had some compression artefacts in dark scenes, but the ones I took with Fraps are pretty well uncompressed.

I'd love to see some comparison benchmarks to see what kind of effect this has.
IIRC process lasso doesn't work in Windows 10 and there's no working alternative to it.
I am on Windows 10 :v: [t]https://files.catbox.moe/tabmj7.png[/t] Everything works as far as I have noticed, including the extra features it has like the balance restrictions of background apps and automatically prioritizing foreground apps, aside from saving CPU priority and affinity settings.

I don't like Win+G as the shortcut, however. Would much prefer something that didn't involve a key I use to throw grenades or whatever else.

Thank you for this [editline]26th January 2017[/editline]
Snickerdoodle that sounds like more of a RAM/HDD issue
16 GB and an SSD, so I really doubt it. But giving more CPU priority to the game DOES work so *shrugs*
Lets say he uses premiere pro. Shadowplay has variable framerate, and adobe premiere pro hates that. I hope this will work without the win+g overlay, it can cause a lot of issues.
I don't see the purpose of using Shadowplay (unless of course you're not recording all the time) to record. I find it difficult to use compared to OBS, and OBS can use Shadowplay's super duper recording codec anyway. Maybe I'm just missing something.
Apparently this won't work in full screen games because it's part of the compositor (aka Desktop Window Manager). Pretty useless to most people including me.
So I have to use their stupid Xbox overlay in return for a 2% performance increase. No thanks.
also this
