These old characters are the ones that have shaped this galaxy through the actions, people who refuse to read EU content may still want to know what has happened of Luke, Leia and Han Solo? Having older characters also means the older generation who grew up with starwars can also relate and enjoy old memories, instead of just being a JJ Startrek which didnt sit well with much older fans of the series.
I kinda like the concept of them passing down the torch to the keys of the galaxy.
