Considering what money seems to do to most people - i.e. corrupt the shit out of them - I'd say he deserves applause for the mere fact that he's not a dick.
I'm sorry, he may be a philanthropist today, and good on him for that, but he was a huge dick for the period of time he was at the helm of Microsoft.
Bill Gates is great, isn't he?
Maybe he should do it while he's still alive.
I know he is donating already, but he's still parking his ass on 40-some billion dollars.

This too.
Facepunch never ceases to amaze me.
He probably means what's left after he dies. He's already given over $35b to charity.
Hadn't heard this.

He is.
As of 2007, Bill and Melinda Gates were the second-most generous philanthropists in America, having given over $28 billion to charity.[71] They plan to eventually give 95% of their wealth to charity.
They plan to give more. I'd be parking my ass on a lot of money if I were him as well. If I got some sort of rare illness or if I got very seriously injured I would have the money to try and treat it with the best possible care available. I'm probably just paranoid about that stuff, but if I had the money I would put it away just in case.

everyone stole things from Xerox. :v:
And, to my surprise, I was invited to a meeting in that conference room the next afternoon, where Bill Gates had somehow manifested, alone, surrounded by ten Apple employees. I think Steve wanted me there because I had evidence of Neil asking about the internals, but that never came up, so I was just a fascinated observer as Steve started yelling at Bill, asking him why he violated their agreement.
"You're ripping us off!", Steve shouted, raising his voice even higher. "I trusted you, and now you're stealing from us!"
But Bill Gates just stood there coolly, looking Steve directly in the eye, before starting to speak in his squeaky voice.
"Well, Steve, I think there's more than one way of looking at it. I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it."
You can't just "give away" 40 billion dollars. You have to do it seriously and over time like he is.
Well, Steve, I think there's more than one way of looking at it. I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it.
At least he was fucking honest about stealing it, unlike Jobs who refused to accept that it wasn't his idea to be stolen.
xerox called, they want you to shut the fuck up Steve
steve called, he wanted to let you know that xerox was paid by apple and he'd like to know how much microsoft paid for the GUI.
Unlike Jobs where he didn't give jack shit to charity.
i'm not saying that steve did anything that even comes close to the amount of money bill donated to charity, but it was part of steve's religion to privately give to charity.
and he closed apple's philanthropy when apple needed all of the money it could get. and now tim cook is reopening it.
Yeah it sure takes a lot of honor to give away all your money when you can't use it anymore.
I'm not denying Gate's philanthropy, he does quite a lot for humanity, but giving away your money after you die isn't really that magnificent.
Uh what? He could very well give it to all his family
xerox called, they want you to shut the fuck up Steve
Without wanting to turn this into a huge argument, I just want to say that a) Apple paid Xerox to see their work on the GUI concept, and Apple themselves developed the concept further before releasing it and b) (unrelated to the previous bit), just because Steve Job's charity work isn't as far ranging or substantial as Bill Gates, he still did a bit for charity. It's just that (especially towards the end of his life when the implications of his cancer were clear), he thought he could do more could for the world by working at Apple(and Pixar/Disney) than giving his money away. You can argue about if this decision was correct, but that is what he personally felt (hence why he went into work more as he became more ill. Using his time wisely)
Steve Jobs was a cunt, I'm sorry.
You don't need to be sorry. There's no punishment for telling the truth.
if you really think about, nothing said is really all that bad

I'd like to point out Gates also has three children. He could have given all his money to them, but he is smart enough to realize they don't need that much money.

He does not pamper them unlike most rich people. I'm sure they can live on their own.
Steve Jobs was a visionary, Bill has always been far more down-to-earth. That's the whole thing you know, people like Bill go on and do what makes sense, and it just works for them because it is what's logical, what is rationally the best idea. People who act like Steve Jobs did make a living by doing the exact opposite, and whatever idea they come up with either becomes a huge success or flops.

Bill shares Warren Buffett's views about children from the "lucky sperm club". I think it's a good way to look at how your children are going to live. I wouldn't want my children to never have to do anything for themselves just because I could give them money to live that way.

Steve Jobs is like the Pope, he did not actually do anything, he just acted like a figurehead

besides reviving a company from near-bankruptcy to one of the biggest companies in the world
Bill Gates is great, isn't he?
Honestly, I actually expected that he would do that.
If I ever became a multi-billionaire, I would model myself after Bill Gates and be very open about it, even probably tell Bill Gates that he's awesome and more wealthy people need to be like him or gtfo.
No one still remembers Dennis Ritchie? He was more contributing than Gates and Jobs combined.

Job's contributed to something?
besides reviving a company from near-bankruptcy to one of the biggest companies in the world
Last time I checked, Bill Gates is the one who gave Apple the money to save it from bankruptcy.
Unlike Jobs where he didn't give jack shit to charity.
I don't either, and i am not alone. Does that make me and everyone else that feels charity is a waste of money dicks?
Edit:
I also don't understand the zings on OP. That doesn't make sense.
Neither Jobs nor Bill are the great evil or saints. They are just two very different people. Argueably the opposite of eachother.

Have you even met him?
I'm curious if he'd donate his organs when he dies, I mean just like his money, he won't need them when he's dead.
It's not even your choice if you donate, it's cool you got the card and all, but when your dead the option to donate is left to your next of kin. And even then, it depends on how and where you die, it's like only 10% of organ donors are actually fit or able to donate.
