I've never used italics to make someone aware I was being sarcastic.

I've always used to italics to make a point or to stress something.

ie "I'd never watch Twilight [i]unless[/i] you told me I'd die halfway through."

I've always used :P for sarcasm, but probably no-one else does so it's kind of a moot point.
